We welcome Marilyn & Simon to the Red Lion The pub is fast becoming a vibrant hub of the village. There is an excellent new menu with food served every day. Why not give them a try? - you will be made very welcome. There are now two new bus services in the village - both to the new Rushden Lakes Shopping and Leisure site - see page 44. The Stagecoach bus is on a Saturday only and is from/to Olney so gives an option to also travel to Olney. The Diamond Coaches bus is on a Wednesday only. Both take bus passes. We were pleased to have been invited to take part in Helen Blaby’s BBC Radio Northampton programme on the 22nd May when she focused on Bozeat. She and her researcher were very complimentary about the magazine, which was much appreciated, and it was lovely to hear representatives from many of our services, clubs and societies as well as a local historian. Special Happy Birthday wishes to Pat Driver, who co-ordinates advertising for the magazine, as she celebrates a ‘milestone’ birthday in October! LITTLE CONNECTIONS Linda Brett, 665831 Little Connections is a friendly and welcoming group for babies, toddlers and their carers plus anybody else who would like to join us. Each session focuses on a particular Biblical story or theme. There are arts and crafts linked to this followed by a short story and lots of singing. We end with prayer and a healthy snack. The last week of the summer term is always bitter-sweet. We hope we have supported our year 6 children to become lifelong learners and confident individuals. We hope we have also helped them to develop a strong moral code and a set of values to guide them through life. We wish them happiness and success in the future and I am sure that September will not only be a nerving but exciting time for them all. We are also saying goodbye to a number of families who have been associated with our school for many years. We would like to say thank you to them for being part of our school community and for all the support they have given us and our children over the years. I feel very privileged to work with such a dedicated staff team and I would like to thank the whole staff team. We welcome two new additions to our teaching team; Mrs Helen White, who will be leading our Nursery class and Miss Lucy Hanlon who is our new Year 4/5 teacher. I would also like to thank the team of wonderful volunteers who come into school weekly to listen to readers and practice key words. I would like to take this opportunity at the end of this academic year to give a special thank you to our group of voluntary school governors and to acknowledge the time and energy that they give to school. Our governors provide support and challenge to leaders at school to ensure that we are constantly improving our provision. The work of our governors is vital to ensuring that our school provides quality education and I am very grateful that this excellent team is so willing to give up time to monitor, evaluate and challenge our work in school. Mr David Snape is an incredibly supportive and knowledgeable Chair of Governors and I would like to thank him for his fantastic support this year, I could not have wished for better support and advice.

Emmaus Village Carlton receives royal award and celebrates seven new bedrooms

Emmaus Village Carlton recently celebrated a double achievement.

We are always on the lookout for volunteer helpers in school.

The Lord-Lieutenant of Bedfordshire, Mrs Helen Nellis, presented the local homelessness charity with the prestigious Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. Customers from the charity’s popular charity shop and bistro, as well as well-wishers from the local area, gathered at the charity’s community buildings in Carlton to witness the presentation. The Mayor of Bedford, Mr Dave Hodgson, continued proceedings by then officially opening ‘Silverbirches’ - new accommodation on site, including seven new rooms and two flats. The Queen's Award for Voluntary Service is the highest award given to voluntary groups across the UK for their outstanding work in the local community and has equivalent status to an MBE. The opening of Silverbirches sees Emmaus Village Carlton’s accommodation facilities increase to 42 bedrooms. Emmaus Village Carlton supports formerly homeless people by giving them a home, meaningful work in a social enterprise and an opportunity to regain lost self-esteem to help rebuild their lives. Infant Aquatics lead the way in new submerging approach for baby swimming. Infant Aquatics is a long standing baby led swim school, always using the most recent and up to date information and research to ensure its techniques are the safest and create a positive experience for babies. Founders Carly and Mel are proud to be members of Birthlight, the charity who work globally with experts and are always at the fore front of new developments within the aquatic environment. In recent year’s new research by internationally renowned infant swimming expert, Mr. Terje Stakset has shown that deep submerging is not always in the best interest of baby and can cause unnecessary stress. Mel says “Our whole ethos is baby led; securing a safe and happy environment so we were extremely interested in this information and research. From the day we started teaching we never advised submerging if a child was upset but we did teach deeper vertical submerging- that was until we met Terje Stakset- his approach along with our Birthlight training made total sense – why were we teaching deep submerging when ultimately we wanted children to swim on the surface? The shallow, child elective approach fitted our entire beliefs. We have found by using the approach our children rarely go through a time when they do not want to put their faces in or have a wobble so we believe it is working and if they choose to dive deep it is because they want to!’ As well as changing some of their submerging techniques they also stopped offering underwater photography as they didn’t want it to be a negative experience for some babies. Carly says “We now teach babies and children to swim with their face in the water and naturally develop shallow water submersions electively. This is so powerful and a positive way forward. Of course, they get to a point where there’s no stopping them, but I’m proud to say it’s all about working at baby’s pace and never forcing them to do something out of their control”. Contact us... Northamptonshire Carers is a local charity based in Wellingborough, that supports unpaid carers across the county. As we approach the Silver Jubilee of our organisation, we have decided to launch a major initiative to raise funds to allow us to increase the provision of what feedback from the Carers themselves tell us is the most popular of our offerings - the opportunity for Carers to take holiday breaks, even if only for a few days, sometimes with the cared for. In this county alone, there are over 69,000 identified Carers including over 6,000 Young Carers. The physical and emotional demands on Carers mean that they are far more likely to succumb to anxiety, depression and illness. A break away or a change of scenery every so often can make all the difference to the Carer’s well-being and therefore to the well-being of the cared for. Your time to shine at our first Access to Higher Education open evening Climbing the ladder of success is now one rung closer as the University of Northampton hosts its first Access to Higher Education open evening. The Access to Higher Education Diploma is a qualification which prepares people without traditional qualifications for study at university. Future students who want to start such a course can come along on Monday 25 September and meet local college staff to find out more about the course and sign-up for one. Current Access students who wish to continue their studies at Northampton are also invited, to meet our lecturers and talk about the courses on offer at University of Northampton. You can also ask questions about what it’s like to study at Northampton, what the workload is like and how flexible courses can be in regards to childcare and part-time working. 10th ANNIVERSARY. Yes we’ve been going ten years and celebrated after our walk on 15th July with lunch in a walker's garden, that was the idea but rain made us retreat indoors but it went very well anyway. If you have a paper shredder and use it please do bag the paper before putting it into the Recycling Bin - that way it doesn't fly away when being emptied. Similarly cigarette butts - small but hundreds are thrown down in Bozeat and it takes a long time to sweep or pick up - by us so please dispose of them properly. Wherever you are in the village there will be litter bins nearby - if not - please take rubbish home. Walking the village you will see lots of overhanging branches from residents gardens. Owners do please lop regularly so they do not inconvenience people walking by. We regularly walk in from the Olney end and the Quarry end of the bypass and clear rubbish. The Council do some but a lot is flung out of cars when passing through our area. A great shame. We also try and keep tidy the area outside the shops.

Carol Fearnley, 663282 WOW…..If you were one of the many who attended our Coffee Morning on 20th May we extend a very grateful ‘thank you’ as you helped us give £611.40 to the Daylight Centre, and a further £53 was donated in the yellow collection box on their table. BOZEAT COMMUNITY HALL NEEDS YOU

Debbie Horsman spoke about Shackleton’s Forgotten Men at our May meeting. Debbie is an indirect relative of A.P. Spencer-Smith who was one of Ernest Shackleton’s men ~ a relative had given Debbie some interesting papers from that Antarctic expedition of a hundred years ago. While on a cruise to visit Shackleton’s grave on South Georgia Island, Debbie met Henry Worsley who had successful retraced Shackleton’s steps in 2009. We were told of the dramatic true story of the 1915-1916 Antarctic tragedy and survival of the heroic crew of Aurora who were to arrange food supplies in huts across the Great Ross Ice Shelf, in preparation for Shackleton’s expedition on his final part of the trek from the South Pole to the Ice Shelf. Due to the bad weather Shackleton’s plans to sail Endurance from South Georgia to the Weddell Sea area of Antarctica were scuppered, so he and his crew did not make the trek. As no contact was made with the Aurora about the aborted trek, the men did as planned and delivered the food supplies ~ the outcome being that the crew of the Aurora had been left to their own devices, and they were Shackleton’s Forgotten Men. If you were near the Little Chapel at 8pm on 14th June you would have seen the Fish & Chip van delivering just to us, as we were having a personal ‘fry-up’ for our June F&C supper meeting. Twenty-two members enjoyed an ‘evening with a difference’. We were at Ampthill W.I for our July meeting, and listened to stories in the life of retired BBC journalist Bill Hamilton. With his opening video pictures Bill introduced himself as Man on the Spot. Bill’s journalistic life of fifty years had him taking interviews in many places from Palaces to Prisons, War Zones to Football, and he met many known people including Mother Teresa, Sarah Ferguson and Norman Wisdom. His first passion was refereeing, and achieved fame at 14 by being the youngest referee. Bill went into journalism, and aged 22 was reporting the news on television at Newcastle ~ we heard about his nerves before reading his first live Six o’clock News. Bill commented on shorthand notes now replaced by wi-fi with computers/tablets, and how photographing incidents by mobile phone and transmitting it worldwide in seconds, beats any journalist’s report. Journalists today have to prepare their own editorial for TV and Radio, and modern technology is there to do so as today’s public want News ‘just as it happens’. Maybe one of our evening Talks interests you, if so please come to listen at a cost of £4 and have a cup of tea/coffee. You will be very welcome if you wish to join Bozeat W.I.

The Church Hall will hopefully soon become Bozeat Community Hall It will be run by the village for the village The hall had over 350 bookings last year. With the closure of the Methodist Chapel and the Working Men’s Club, plus the restricted access to the school, the hall is now the only village venue with the capacity to facilitate community events of any size. What a wonderful summer we’ve had, celebrating ten years of Cafe Connections, a fresh expression of church in Bozeat, which started in July 2007. It was lovely to welcome back some ‘old’ faces and to hear how God has impacted their lives through Cafe Connections. The Fun Day at The Vicarage was also a great success with over 100 people enjoying various activities with good food and an opportunity to chill out with friends and family.

Alpha 2017 Millions of people all over the world have now attended an Alpha Course, an opportunity to explore the meaning of life, running in tens of thousands of locations across the world. Alpha is an opportunity for anyone to explore the Christian faith in a relaxed, non-threatening setting over ten thought-provoking weekly sessions, with a day away. It is low-key, friendly and fun. The food is great and the course is supported by all the main Christian denominations. For those who are unsure about joining this year’s course, there will be a free Introduction Supper at Bozeat Church Community Hall in Allen’s Hill, on Wednesday 20th September from 7.30 – 9.30 p.m. As well as a free supper, there will also be an opportunity to hear a talk entitled: “Is there more to life than this?” and some impressions from people who have recently completed a Alpha. WOLLASTON CRICKET CLUB David Ward, 663951 At the time of writing it’s been a tough season for the First Eleven with the initial win eventually materialising in July. The five-wicket victory against Northampton Saints was comprehensive and a sigh of relief was heard around the Club. This was followed up two weeks later by a ‘winning draw’ against Geddington when we amassed the huge total of 237 for 8, only to see Geddington hold on to avoid defeat on 178 for 8 in their 50 overs. Our Australian colleague Tom Doyle was the star of this game with a top score of 85 and a wicket haul of 5 for 28 off 15 overs. The highest First Eleven individual total so far however was 95 off 146 balls made by Harry Broome against Finedon. Chris Perry’s 5 for 28 away at Geddington has proved to be the best bowling return for the First Eleven up to the end of July. The Seconds are riding high in division three win nine wins from fifteen games, and are one place off the promotion spot. Marcus Shelton made hay while the sun shone at Stony Stratford when he compiled 91 stylish runs before the heavens opened and the game was abandoned. One run behind Marcus was Mark Carter at Heyford where he made 90 not out before tea, after which Steve Musgrave remarkably took 7 for 23 in 10 overs to wrap the game up in Wollaston’s favour. The Thirds meanwhile will endure a shortened season due to Grendon Thirds pulling out the League and Weekley & Warkton forfeiting both the home and away fixtures due to lack of players. Despite this however, notable wins have been achieved with several youngsters stepping up from the Under 15s, contributing and making a good impression. Notably, the 326 for 5 against Kettering 3rds (Nathan Dawson 80) set a new Third team record, beating the previous best of 323 against the same opposition in 2015. Andrew Monteith’s 84 not out – containing 14 fours and 2 sixes proved the winning knock against Brigstock 3rds when he and Andy Luck put on 142 for the first wicket to chase down the opposition’s 140. Our juniors have had an outstanding season. The Under 15s have won six games out of nine and are joint top of their division. The Under 13s lie in second place in theirs, and the Under 11s have won nine, lost none, and are 8 points clear of second placed Finedon. Our Under 9s have competed successfully in several tournaments around the County and the Tournament at Wollaston was a huge success. We were lucky with the weather again on the WCC Fun Day where families mingled, children played and a good time was had by all. At the time of writing our Under 19s are waiting for their next T20 Knock-out Cup game following their overwhelming win at Brixworth. ST MARY’S CHURCH COMMUNITY HALL George Sharratt, 663029 The hall continues to be well used by the community. With the regular user groups, fund raising events, celebrations, children’s parties and other activities it is averaging six bookings a week. The programme of planned maintenance continues and as usual my thanks go to all those who continue to help support and maintain the Hall. Good progress is being made with setting up the Community Hall Trust. The aim is for the Trust to take on a lease to run and manage the hall and be able to raise grant funding to carry out the necessary renovations to secure the hall for the community. Big THANK YOU’s to the’ setter uppers’, raffle givers and ticket sellers, kitchen choppers and spreaders, can and bottle openers, ‘washer uppers’ and ‘put awayers’! , but especially YOU the public. Our new Royal British Legion County Chairman asked to come and meet ‘Bozeat’ after the reports he read on past events, with the village support. He was over-whelmed on the turn-out and how happy the village is. When I told him later what we took and the attendance he saw he puts us up there with Kettering, Finedon, Brackley. Give yourselves a big pat!

Our Harvest Festival is on Sunday 1st October. The preacher is Rev Steve Blyth from Nuneaton. The service starts at 2.30 and tea will follow. Come and join us to thank God for all his gifts to us. The family of Ann Simms, who passed away on the 14th May in Kettering Hospital, would like to thank everyone who sent messages of condolence and sympathy.

I would like to say a very big thank you to the Parish Council Chairman and his staff for their work putting it on.

Ann lived in Bozeat for over forty years and was one of the founders of the Playing Field Association. She was also an active member of Bozeat Players.

TLC@Bozeat Summer is all but over. The long summer school holidays, that stretched before us only a few weeks ago, are ended. As you read this article mums and dads have already bought new school uniform and trudged the shoe shops for new shoes and plimsolls.

Jesus knew exactly what to do. In Mark chapter 10 v13 - 16 we read how parents were bringing their children to Jesus for him to bless them. His disciples tried to turn them away, saying Jesus was too busy. But Jesus would have none of it. He sternly told his disciples to leave them alone. He turned to the children, put his arms around them and blessed them. We can do no better than that; assure our children of our love and pray for them. Pray that they will make good decisions, that they will choose their friends carefully and that God will bless them and protect them throughout their lives.

This will enable the Trustees to be able to keep and maintain this important and well used asset for Bozeat residents usage for many future years to come. More likely the show will have already taken place by the time you read this, so may we take the opportunity to thank everyone involved, whether exhibitors, the judges, those that have helped in any way on the day or in the run up to the event and, of course, everyone who has come along to the Show. BOZEAT BOWLS CLUB Carol Witherden, 631405 We continue to have a good turnout for each of our sessions. A group of us are now taking part in the Earl Spencer Cup, sponsored by Age UK. We are halfway through the tournament. We have had mixed results but believe we have played well at each match. We have certainly enjoyed the games so far. We have had a few members drop out of the club for various reasons recently and so we are once again in a position to offer places for anyone wanting to have a go at short mat bowls. We meet every Monday afternoon, except bank holidays, at St Mary's Church Hall, from 2.00 4.00 p.m. If you would like to give the game a try please just turn up; we will be very pleased to see you. We have some spare woods so you need not bring anything with you. The competition was held at Orlingbury. Not the easiest of bells and very difficult to listen to in the belfry. The competition was won by Orlingbury. Rushden were second and Bozeat third. Our quality and range of ringing continues to improve. A notable achievement in July was that we rang some courses of Cambridge Surprise Minor with a purely Bozeat band (and with a ringer to spare). The first time that has ever happened. I’d like to try for a quarter peal of Cambridge later in the year to cement this achievement for us. We are still looking for new recruits to the band.
