Dawn over Shingle Street marshes

Warm September brings the fruit, Sportsmen then begin to shoot ... ... in the words of the age-old rhyme, harvest time is upon us once again; that golden, bountiful time of the year. There are still plenty of outdoor activities for you all to enjoy this month: Boyton Fete on Saturday 2 September (p.18), afternoon teas at Shingle Street (p.21) and Bawdsey (p.34), the Flower Festival at All Saints’, Hollesley on the weekend of 23/24 September (p.18) with stalls, refreshments and light lunches, the Fun Dog Show at Hollesley recreation ground on the 23rd and Boyton Apple Day on the 30th. Alderton Fete Thunderstorms and torrential rain were an exciting new attraction at Alderton fete on 5 August, but in true British style the teddies continued to enjoy their picnic! The recruits in the new stocks were glad that everyone had the opportunity to share the same experience. Gavin and Liam from The Swan, Alderton had more sense (sheltering in their car!) Fortunately, the Battle of Waterloo was not flushed away and was a great success!

Alderton Parish Council are proud to announce that a record amount was generously donated, again this year all monies raised will be re-invested back into the village: the children’s play area repairs are a priority.

The teddies continued to enjoy their picnic

APC biggest thanks go to the volunteers who have been there every step of the way, from planning to the hard work all over the fete weekend, this also includes residents from the surrounding villages. A thank you list of the businesses who supported this year’s fete is displayed at Alderton Shop and on the parish notice board.

Church letter Dear Friends, September is a busy month! Everything seems to start up again – not just schools and colleges but all sorts of other activities too. It is a time when many people’s thoughts turn towards harvest and to preserving and storing the food that has been growing around us. For us, in this part of the world, there is so much plenty, so much evidence of the goodness of creation. While the account of creation in the Bible should not be taken as literally and historically accurate, it reminds us of two truths which most faiths agree about: that the universe has a Creator and that the natural world (including human beings) is, essentially, good. The goodness of creation is something we can all celebrate – whether by sharing a meal with friends and family, coming to a service of Harvest Thanksgiving or taking time to look at the world around us: Go out into the natural world and look with God's eyes; listen with God's ears; know your place within God's good creation. Hollesley School -

our trip to Aylmerton field study centre

Last term, most of years five and six went on a residential trip to Aylmerton field study centre. It was an exhausting two-and-a-half hour journey. When we finally got there, our bags were carried out and the staff greeted us warmly. Then, we were sorted into our dorms for the week.

The first activity for the week was pirate activities; this included: climbing the rigging (using carabiners on a mini climbing course), building a monsoon shelter using a tarpaulin, rope and sticks, walking the plank and the boson’s chair (which was using a rope, harness and carabiners to make a zip wire across water). After tea, we had our evening activity, which was the twilight safari, we walked around the Felbrigg garden and then had a campfire with our main instructor, Sparky, telling us the story of Lord John and Lady Florence.

On the third day we waded across what was later in the day – a river!

On the second day, we took a coach trip to West Runton and walked from there to Cromer along the beach. When we got to Cromer, we had our packed lunches on the pier and then went to the lifeboat museum where we saw a lifeboat that rescued people from a marooned ship and learnt about the incredible rescue. After that, we climbed up Cromer church tower. It has 170 steps to reach the top. On the third day, we walked around Blakeney Point, played in the mud, waded across what was later in the day – a river! On the way, we paddled at the side of the beach and learnt about how sand dunes are formed. We also got to go on a boat trip to see all of the common and grey seals. On day four, we did teamwork activities and the famous Aylmerton Monster Trail. We had to navigate our way across the Felbrigg estate with a map and compass while monsters jumped out at us from behind trees and squirted us with water pistols. We collected clues along the way and had to make a word. On the fifth and final day, we went to the zoo before setting off for home. Evie and Eloise www.villagevoices.org.uk

The whole school participated in a sports week in July. Here is the timetable: Monday - Water and Wheels Day Tuesday - Sports Day Wednesday – Dance Around the World Thursday – Circus Skills Friday – Teachers’ Surprise Day

Monday: we went on our wheels around the village and also went on our bikes around the school grounds. Later that day we all had the chance to go on a slip and slide and were able to have a water fight with water balloons. Tuesday: the whole school participated in a sports day where each year group had a boys’ and girls’ running race in which 1st, 2nd and 3rd place ribbons were awarded. Then there was a novelty race, which for Yr 6 was a dressing up race. Wednesday: KS2 went to Kelsale Primary School for a country dancing morning which was a great experience and lots of fun. Thursday: a lady came in to teach us circus skills. There were a range of activities for the pupils to enjoy. The range of activities included: diablo, unicycle, dressing up and lots more. Friday: we had a range of activities which the teachers individually chose which included: swimming, pilates, rounders and circuit training. It was a range of activities that the whole school enjoyed. Farlingaye intake day On Monday 3rd July, year six had an intake day at Farlingaye High School. We were told our forms one by one as we waited patiently for our names to be called. We joined our forms for the day so we could feel how it felt being a year seven and we were able to meet new friends. We did some activities in our forms which included: science and form building exercises. We tried out the school lunches from the cafeteria. On a hot Sunday in July I went with my two children Arthur (8) and Hetty (5) to St Mary’s Church, Bawdsey. I had spotted the sign inviting visitors to climb 83 steps up the tower that is usually locked. The ancient stone steps seemed to crumble away under us, the darkness inside the tower only broken by light from the occasional window. Up and up the twisting steps we climbed as they narrowed and we were reaching for handholds and footholds till we felt we were climbing into a fairy tale. Do you think the door at the bottom will be locked by the time we get back? Arthur said. Let’s go back down, I said as my foot slipped. Yes! No! Are we there yet? Hetty asked scrambling higher. Then suddenly, there we were out in brilliant sunshine with the Peninsula laid out in every direction around us. There were magnificent Winnie the Pooh views over Bawdsey, past Martello Towers back to Hollesley, out to sea and as far as Orford. We remembered the two men who climbed the tower and, as a prank (that went wrong,) lit a flaming ball of tar and turpentine and set fire to the church. We hurried back down! We came back that evening for the Books in Bloom Flower Festival service. People from the Peninsula had made inspired flower arrangements and the church was filled with their fragrance. Children from Bawdsey School had gathered flowers to decorate the font, there was a Where’s Wally? display, a floral Hungry Caterpillar, a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party’ and more. The service was wonderful, rich with stories and poetry readings and lit by the low evening sun slanting through the mullioned windows. Thank you to everyone who made it such a special occasion. Dear Editor, Firstly, can I please thank everyone who have so kindly donated duvets and material to us, (DAFT) so that our willing band of volunteers can make fabulous dog beds to sell at our forthcoming Fun Dog Show in Hollesley (see poster below). We really do appreciate your donations, and it so good to know that thanks to Sue Taylor and her sewing team, these beds will help to raise much needed funds for Suffolk Animal Rescue. The most valuable thing anyone can give is their time, and we are so very lucky in Hollesley to have residents who give of their time freely, to help good causes. Thank you to each of you! Registration is at 1.00pm and judging starts promptly at 2.00pm. We are very fortunate to have Lesley Mann from Acorn Dog Training coming to judge for us. Happidays are supplying the PA and music, together with a Have a Go Agility Ring. There will be a few trade stands and craft stalls to keep you interested, as well as scrummy refreshments, courtesy of the WI. Farewell to Chris Wilson

When I first came here 45 years ago, Chris Wilson and his first wife, Brenda, ran Shottisham Village Stores. Then later, they ran the Old Star in Bawdsey, where they took in guests. Chris played the organ and ran a small choir for a while. Brenda was suffering with mental health problems. They moved to Melton Terrace, where unfortunately she took her life. Chris continued on as organist in all the village churches in our area and in Bromeswell and others in that group. He played at weddings, including my son David’s, funerals and special services. Chris married Molly and had a very happy life, enjoying many coach outings moving to St Andrew’s place in Melton. As a daughter and grand-daughter of organists who had trained at the Royal Organist College in London, I found Chris’s touch of the keys and his interpretation of the music wonderful: he also adapted to the diferent organs he played. Chris was a very kind man and he was always extremely obliging.

Nature note: a gleam in the dark I’ve spent some happy evenings this summer trying to find a glow-worm, a magical and mysterious species we have all heard of but few have actually seen. I’ve visited several promising woodland sites and wandered slowly among the bushes in the darkness, looking for a tell-tale gleam in the undergrowth. One of the pleasures of natural history is that you often find one interesting thing while looking for another. So, I’ve seen plenty of owls, bats,

deer, foxes, badgers and other creatures of the night: heard lots of loud rustlings by unseen animals, and surprised at least one ardent courting couple, who could be said to be glowing somewhat, I suppose. But not a glimpse of my real quarry. Glow-worms are getting rare now, so I was beginning to lose heart.

But then I struck lucky. At about 10pm on one warm, calm evening in mid-July, I was exploring a local

forestry trail, when I spied a tiny glimmering light deep in the bracken, almost at ground level. Yes! I crawled in and shone my torch on it, to reveal a small drab insect clinging to a stem and emitting a weird, golden-green radiance. It’s the female glow-worm that lights up this way – to attract the males, wouldn’t you have guessed. The females are wingless and look like rather nondescript grubs, but the males are winged and fly on to the landing-strips thus illuminated. Once the females have mated they switch off the lights. Shakespeare described the glow-worm’s light as a pale ineffectual fire, and as usual, he had correctly noticed an important natural feature. The glow-worm contains a chemical called luciferin, which through a complex reaction with oxygen and water converts almost all its energy into light rather than heat, so the light is indeed a pale, cool one (but quite bright). That’s the opposite of the domestic light-bulb, which wastes most of its energy in heat. So maybe there’s a new idea here for the Green Party. How about a National Grid of street lights, powered by glow-worms? A famous scene in Thomas Hardy’s Return of the Native almost anticipates this possibility. Diggory Venn and Wildeve play at dice by the light of some glow-worms they have gathered and placed in a circle around their makeshift gaming-table when their lantern blows out. And various poets hail its powers as an insect lantern-bearer (Blake) earth-born star (Wordsworth), love torch (Coleridge) and twinkling star of spangled earth (John Clare). Of course, I’d love to get all the other Boyton villagers to come along as well, so that people in the future will be able to see what we Boytonians (or should that be Boytonites?) looked like in 2017. On a happier note, outings to Aldeburgh Summer Theatre included: Communicating Doors, an ingenious play by Alan Aykbourn, and Murder Weapon, a play by Brian Clemens, both well performed and much enjoyed. Petanque On 31 July, a Petanque Day at Brandeston Village Hall was enormous fun. A scrumptious French style lunch was provided before the last two games – a successful day altogether.

Summer has sent us into our gardens, on holiday and to spend time with families. For some members, however, it has been a difficult time. There have been several bereavements, and some members have suffered ill health. Our hearts go out to them all.

Rosemary Busby hosted her traditional fundraising Garden Party on 3 August. This is always a pleasurable get together. Cake, vegetable and white elephant stalls did a brisk trade. Games and quizzes kept us busy as we sipped Pimms, munched cake and chatted. Thank you, Rosemary! Our Summer Meal on 11 August brought us together for a relaxed evening, with a delicious buffet meal, games and entertainment by Committee members. We were pleased to welcome representatives from East Suffolk Federation of WI’s. A joyful evening was had by all. We have many interesting events planned for the Autumn. Tai Chi in Hollesley

Tai Chi is a type of exercise - sometimes known as moving meditation. It is well known for promoting health and vitality and is practised by millions of people every day. Because it is performed slowly and gently, it is increasingly popular for people of all ages who want to exercise and stay flexible. It can be very calming to do, leaving you feeling energised but relaxed. Balance is at the heart of what Tai Chi is about. Within a couple of lessons you become aware of how your feet touch the ground and support Ali Crawford weight. Then you realise that the more you relax, the easier it is to balance! This builds confidence and means that everyday activities can be carried out with more ease, which in turn allows us to take stock and to be more centred.

Hollesley Community Garden

Produce and plants were on sale and there was also a tombola stall. Although this was the fundraiser to help with the upkeep of the garden, it was a really friendly, social event, enjoyed by everyone who came. It was heart-warming to see the garden being occupied by so many cheerful people having a chat, a laugh and enjoying each other's company. Well done to the few hard-working volunteers who So many cheerful people having a chat keep this lovely village amenity going throughout the year.

On the afternoon of Saturday 22 July, the sun shone, mostly, and everyone enjoyed themselves at the Afternoon Tea event. A delightful venue - the garden looked particularly attractive, from the bunting and the new gate, to all the flower beds and vegetable plots. Tables and chairs were arranged on the lawn, each table having a small glass vase containing a bloom - this lovely attention to detail added to the whole experience, along with the tea and delicious cakes.

July Gardening Club Events: the visit to the Thompson and Morgan Trial and Development Nursery was a very interesting insight into how they develop new varieties of flowers and vegetables. This process can take 6 years!

Our guest speaker from Notcutts Garden Centre was General Manager Darren Brooks who gave an informative talk on Pests and Diseases. One useful snippet of information is that there is now a slug pellet on the market which is not poisonous to wildlife, pets and children. The Club's AGM on 28 September will be crucial in deciding whether or not the club can continue - let's hope we will have sufficient people to form a new committee. From our country kitchen

This is one of my favourite things and I can't wait for the figs on our tree to ripen. I make the focaccia from the recipe on our website, but a good sour dough would work as well. How many figs you will need depends on their size, but 5 small ones will do. For 2 portions split a piece of focaccia, about 10cm x 15cm, horizontally to give two rectangles, then place them side by side in a shallow baking tin lined with foil. Set the oven at 200C, Gas 6. Spread runny honey over the bread and scatter with finely chopped, fresh rosemary. Slice the figs into four and arrange on top. Spoon some more honey over the figs, put in the oven and bake for 15 mins. Remove and turn the oven to grill setting. Slice 10g of goat’s cheese into thick rounds and place on top of the figs. Grill for 5 mins, or until the cheese starts to melt. Serve immediately. (I use steak knives as the bread gets very crisp.) Hollesley Bowls Club

We are now well over half way through the season for outdoor bowls and some fine results have put us in a good position in both leagues that we play in. We have lost two members this season but also gained two and we always have room for more members. In June we had the first of our open tournaments but due to other clubs having cup fixtures and tournaments, we had a low turnout. However, the sun shone and there were plenty of spectators and some really good bowls. June Dickens and her team were the winners: many congratulations to them! In mid-June Hollesley was asked to host a Senior Cup final match and many comments were made about the excellent facilities both on and off the rink.

July was the month for the 2nd tournament and we were almost fully booked. We were blessed with good weather, good competition, plenty of food and drink and ice creams A very sociable day and congratulations to K. King on winning the trophy. Many thanks go to the ladies who support the Bowls Club by selling raffle tickets and producing all the food and endless cups of tea. In August, we hosted a slightly different event as we were asked by UKcycle events to use the bowls club as a feeding station for cyclists competing in a 92 mile challenge starting and finishing at Otley. A medic arrived for any poorly cyclists and a mechanic for poorly bicycles! A refreshment tent was set up with a wonderful array of biscuits, jelly beans and bananas (worth taking up cycling for) plus 40 gallons of drinks! Over a 2-hour period, around 180 cyclists arrived and after a very quick comfort stop they were off on the next leg. Boyton August Coffee Morning This coffee morning raised £50.10 which was encouraging: the total was added to the Boyton Village Hall funds to help towards the Village Hall expenses. Hollesley Parish Council The SID Stats are in Since the purchase of the Speed Indicator Device (SID) at the beginning of the year we can report an overwhelming positive feedback. Even though it might be in only one area at a time, it reminds drivers throughout the entire village to adhere to the speed limit . Preliminary data collected from the SID indicates some amazing figures. Over a 65 day period in May, June and July, over 39,000 vehicles were detected. On the whole, traffic is keeping within the parameters of the speed limit with 62% travelling at 30mph or under and a further 22% travelling between 30 and 35 mph. However this still means 16% of vehicles are travelling at over 35 mph and we have logged some crazy speeds; two recordings of a vehicle travelling at over 80 mph along Boyton Road in the middle of the afternoon! How we tackle such speeding will be a challenge but we will be analysing the data to look for patterns of possible repeat offenders and this will be passed to the Police. We do remind residents if they are on the roads after dark to try and have reflective clothing and to be vigilant. Cyril had been a member of the Parish Council for at least 13 years and had been involved in numerous projects over that time. The Council is certainly going to miss that smile! We wish Cyril the very best in his retirement from office. We will be co-opting a new Councillor at the September meeting (7th September, 7.30pm at the Village Hall) so if you are interested in joining us please come along or contact the Clerk for further details. New Village Sign The final design for the new village sign has now been agreed and we are currently awaiting a full colour proof. Suffolk Churches Ride and Stride It's that time of year to dust off the bicycle or walking shoes to take part in the sponsored event to raise funds for Suffolk Historic Churches Trust and a church of your choice. The idea is to visit as many churches as you can between 9.00am- 5.00pm on Saturday 9 September. This is an annual event which started in Suffolk in 1982 with the objective of providing funding in order to help maintain the county’s many churches. This year, 33 counties in England will be taking part and as most of the Deben churches have received grants from the Trust it is important that we support it. Replacement swings for Boyton village green

As you may have seen, the swings for older children on the village green at Boyton have recently been taken out of service because the wooden frame was deteriorating. To replace them, the Village Hall Committee is planning to install two new swings with a strong metal crossbar, and with safety protection to current modern standards. A specialist supplier has been selected, and the committee will now be applying for a grant from the district council to cover the cost of installation. Richard Jesty

Macmillan coffee morning at Bawdsey School

We would like to invite everybody to Bawdsey school, we are holding an open morning and Macmillan coffee morning on Friday 29th September from 9.30-11am. There will be a selection of delicious cakes and the year 5 and 6 children will be waitering/ waitressing the event. Everyone is welcome to come and help us raise money for this amazing charity. During the morning there will also be guided tours of the school, so you can see the school in action and the building changes that we have had over the Summer break. Suffolk heritage garden The fruit trees in our Suffolk orchard are bearing well. Some that had a heavy crop last year are taking a rest but Suffolk Pink, a favourite with Waitrose, is laden. Last year we picked the fruit and put some at the reception desk for visitors to try. We'll do the same this year, as they ripen.

Boyton Apple Day

Last week, one of our trustees cut the orchard with his scythe. We wait for the flower seeds to ripen and fall, so hopefully the flowers will gradually increase in the meadow each summer. Scything the Heritage orchard

We are holding the Apple Day early this year: Saturday 30 September 2-4 pm. Weather permitting we'll have the equipment spread out on the grass in front of the Hall and if the weather is unkind, we’ll be hard at work inside. This is always a fun event, pressing apples to make delicious apple juice, so please do come. Bring your apples to press, and clean, empty water bottles to fill with juice. Knives and blocks for cutting up the apples are very helpful too. We always have lots of apples available if you haven’t any of your own. We very much look forward to seeing you there! A fond farwell from the Pre-School team Hollesley Pre-School sadly closed in July: Alpha Community Nurseries will be opening up as Hollesley Community Nursery in September. It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we have both come to the decision that we are unable to be a part of Alpha's new venture. It has been our privilege getting to know you and your beautiful families throughout the last 11 years. We would like to thank you all for allowing us to be a part of your children's early years and hope that you won't forget us.
