FROM THE ROBERT R. COLES LONG ISLAND HISTORY ROOM ORIGIN OF PLACE NAMES IN GLEN COVE Have you ever thought about why there is no school on School Street, no bridge on Bridge Street, and no landing on Landing Road? Place names are an integral part of every community’s history. Some of the names predate the earliest settlement of the community, such as Musketa Cove, the Matinecock Indian name by which Glen Cove was first known. Other names have descended intact from the names used by the colonial inhabitants of the community. One example here in Glen Cove is The Place, the street where the founders of Glen Cove built their homes. Immediately adjacent to The Place is Mill Hill Road, which linked the former to the site of the saw and grist mills constructed by the ‘Five Proprietors’ in the third quarter of the 17th century. According to the colonial records, Mill Hill was known as “Gravel Hill” in the early 18th century. Dosoris is another colonial name, derived from the Latin words dos uxoris, meaning “wife’s dowry”. In the early decades of the 18th century, Reverend Benjamin Woolsey obtained a rather large tract of land in this region Bridge over Lower Pond in Glen Cove - Bridge Street of Glen Cove from his wife’s family. Woolsey retired ca. 1900 from his ministry at Southold to settle on his newly acquired farm and took up the life of a country gentlemen. The Woolsey family itself is memorialized in the name of Woolsey Avenue. Prior to the acquisition of the property by the Woolsey family, the region was known as “Morris’s Patent,” after Lewis Morris of Barbados, who had obtained a patent for the land from the colonial government in 1677. Garvies Point derives its name from Dr. Thomas Garvie, a Scottish immigrant who moved to Glen Cove just after the beginning of the 19th century. Garvie was Glen Cove’s first bona fide, university educated physician. Garvies Point was known as “Sheep Pen Point” (presumably because the local inhabitants penned their sheep there). Along what is today Garvies Point Road, was frequented by the coastal trading vessels which supplied the settlement here. Landing Road once terminated at the steamboat landing constructed in 1829 by a group of local merchants who were competing against Dr. Thomas Garvie to initiate the first steamboat service between Glen Cove and New York City. Garvie had been negotiating with Cornelius Vanderbilt to construct a wharf at Glen Cove. The local merchants, fearing that Garvie and Vanderbilt might attempt to monopolize local trade, formed a company to build a steamboat wharf further north of the Garvie wharf which became known as “The Landing.” The company engaged Captain Elijah Peck, owner of the steamboat Linnaeus, to begin operating between Glen Cove and New York. School Street was once the location of the town’s public school during the early 1800s. Records exist of the construction of a brand new school building in the 1830s, located at the corner of Highland Road and School Street. However, School Street was known originally as Glen Street (or, at least, was considered to be an extension of that road). Bridge Street was named for the bridge, constructed about the turn of this century, over the lower mill pond. When the ponds were filled in during the late 1920s and early 1930s, the name continued in use. This article was written by the late Daniel E. Russell, former Glen Cove Historian.
