Drug and Alcohol Policy Drug and Alcohol Policy The problems associated with drug and alcohol abuse are a major concern in this country. As such, the passage of the Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act Amendments has placed requirements on institutions of higher education to develop policies and to provide information to students on drug and alcohol abuse, which Siena College has done. The College engages in a comprehensive approach to reduce high-risk alcohol use and drug abuse. Prior to their first year at Siena College, all students complete an online education program called MyStudentBody. Once on campus, educational programming aimed at prevention of alcohol and other drug use if provided during orientation. Throughout the academic year the College uses top tier approaches and strategies recommended by the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism for prevention of high-risk alcohol use and drug use. Additionally, counseling is available to all students while at Siena. >Siena College Drug and Alcohol Policy Siena College provides students with the College’s alcohol and drug policy, as well as information on the health risks associated with drug and alcohol abuse. The Alcohol and Drug Policy provides information, counseling and rehabilitation services available, and the federal, state and College sanctions that may be imposed for violations. The College collaborates with civil authorities. The College’s alcohol and drug policy was developed in accordance with New York state and federal law and based on the unique needs of the Siena College community. These policies support Siena's commitment to providing a safe and healthy living and learning environment on campus. Siena College Drug and Alcohol Policy () Educational Sanctions Sanctions are designed to foster an environment that reduces the risks of high risk drinking and promotes responsible behavior while holding individuals accountable for their choices. Hearing officers will take into account prior conduct record, mitigating circumstances, alcohol abuse issues and high risk drinking factors in determining the appropriate in order to best educate the student(s) while maintaining community standards when assigning sanctions. Sanctions range from an educational dialogue (for minor first-time offenses) to student reprimand, residence hall probation or disciplinary probation, dismissal from housing, suspension or expulsion from the College for more serious and/or persistent violators. In addition to the administrative sanctions previously listed, sanctions generally also include an educational component (i.e., BASICS – Brief Alcohol Intervention and Screening for College Students, substance abuse assessment and treatment), and a fine to support the costs of the educational component and community programs. Parents are notified of the alcohol related offense for students under the age of 21 after the case has been adjudicated. Educational Dialogues Our Student Life staff are trained to complete educational dialogues around alcohol and drug use and abuse. These one on one conversations focus on helping students assess their own behavior and arrive at conclusions regarding the need to change negative behaviors. The educational dialogues emphasize the safety and success of our students while discussing College policies, health and academic risks, bystander intervention and resources for assistance.

BASICS (Brief Alcohol Intervention and Screening for College Students) BASICS is a one on one alcohol screening intervention with a alcohol awareness practitioner. The student will meet with a practitioner for two one-hour sessions held approximately two weeks apart. The sessions use alcohol screening and feedback to reduce problem drinking, excessive drinking, and binge drinking. Students must complete homework reflection assignments between the two sessions. The goal of the BASICS sessions are to promote healthier choices, debunk myths about alcohol use and teach coping skills to avoid problem drinking. The BASICS Instructor meets with students on campus and all information shared with the practitioner is confidential. To schedule an appointment, contact the Office of the Dean of Students at 518-783-2328. ">Appointments are located in the Center for Counseling and Student Development, Foy Hall. Room 110.

Substance Abuse Assessment and Treatment When the College becomes aware of a students alcohol abuse or drug use it intervenes with the goal of protecting the health of the student and the community. Students may be required to complete a substance abuse assessment. This assessment must be conducted by a mental health professional who is an addictions specialist. In New York State, this means a professional or program that is certified by the Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS). If completing this assessment out of NYS, the provider must be an addictions specialist and the College reserves the right to confirm this specialization. Many states have an agency similar to OASAS and it is recommended that the student consult with this agency when finding a provider. St. Peter’s Addiction Recovery Center (SPARC) 636 New Loudon Road Latham, NY 12110 518-783-5381 The College has established a long-standing relationship with SPARC to provide diagnostic assessments for alcohol or other drug use. For convenience, it is located off of Route-9 and students may use the local bus system as transportation to appointments.
