On Tuesday, May 23, the Soil Science Society of America and the Crop Science Society of America Boards of Directors held a dinner and attended the SSSA‐sponsored movie, Between Earth and Sky: Climate Change on the Last Frontier. 2. ACTION: Motion by Harold, seconded by Aaron Daigh, to approve the May 24, 2017 SSSA Agenda. Unanimous approval. 3. ACTION: Motion by Cristine Morgan, seconded by Aaron Thompson, to approve the April 18, 2017 SSSA Board Minutes. Unanimous approval. 4. Ellen Bergfeld reviewed the SSSA Strategic Plan Summary and Progress Report. 5. Department Updates: CFO/Director Wes Meixelsperger presented an update of the 2017 SSSA Financials. Unanimous approval. Director Bill Cook presented an update on Publications, including information on the Digital Library, and the second annual Editors’ Conference May 25‐26, 2017 in Madison. o ACTION: SSSA President Andrew Sharpley untabled the April 18, 2017 SSSA Board Meeting motion by Harold van Es, seconded by Aaron Thompson, to approve the conversion of Vadose Zone Journal to Open Access. Unanimous approval.
Director Susan Fisk presented an update on Science Communications, including information about the SSSA Soils Matter Blog. Director Luther Smith presented an update on Professional Development and Business Relations. o ACTION: Motion by Aaron Thompson, seconded by Aaron Daigh, to create a Task Force to develop a connection between SSSA and the state soil science associations (formerly affiliated with the United States Consortium of Soil Science Associations). Unanimous approval. Director Susan Chapman provided an update on Member Services. Director of Government Relations Karl Anderson provided an update on science policy.
6. Chair of the Agronomic Science Foundation Jeff Volenec provided an update on ASF and requested that the SSSA Board consider areas where ASF could assist in fundraising.
7. Ellen Bergfeld reviewed the Code of Conduct on the Annual Meeting website: www.acsmeetings.org Harold van Es presented a proposed New Definition of Soil: Definition of Soil (legal definition): The layers of mineral and/or organic material at or near a planet surface that typically contain liquids, gases, and biota and that has been influenced by physical, chemical, and/or biological processes. 1.
