PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear Parents: It’s hard to believe another school year is coming to an end. As always, please mark your calendars with important dates included in this last newsletter of the year. The last day for seniors is May 29th and the last day for all other students is June 18th. South River High School will be closed for all students on June 9, 2014. We will be preparing for our graduation ceremony at the Equestrian Center at 3:30 p.m. The month of May has literally become “Testing Month”. We will be administering the High School Assessments, the pilot for the upcoming Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (“PARCC”) assessment, and will give over 2,500 Advanced Placement Exams. A huge thanks is in order for the folks at the Riva Trace Baptist Church for allowing us to use their building to conduct much of our Advanced Placement testing. South River has again made the list of the top 25 performing high schools by the Washington Post. South River was the only high school in our county to make the top 25. Staff and students continue to receive recognition for their outstanding work in the school and the community. Teacher Jodie Hogan was the Anne Arundel Teacher of the Year for 2013. Student Kristine W. Mar was recognized as a finalist by the National Merit Scholarship Competition. Student Lyndsay Brooks was recognized as a Carson Scholar. Finally, students Allison Raines and Sally Albright were second place winners at the Anne Arundel County Science Fair. Finally, here are our “Students of the Month” for March. These students were selected by the various departments for their hard work and character. MARCH STUDENTS OF THE MONTH Katie LeGrand—Computer Science Dept. Jordan DeLong—Math Dept. Christine Miles—FACS Dept. David Ossman—Music Dept. Raelyn Moreland—PE Dept. Daisy Kay—English Dept.

Victoria Marinzel—Foreign Language Dept. Megan Rutkai—Signature Dept. Samantha Francis—Science Dept. John Murray—STEM Dept. Siena Manoogian—Art Dept. Ali Preston-Social Studies Dept.

I can’t remember when a school year hasn’t presented many challenges. I have been fortunate to have great support from staff, students, parents and community. Our Parent Teacher Student Organization (“PTSO”) has been outstanding in its support. I would ask each of you to support, not only South River High, but educators across our county. We are losing teachers to surrounding jurisdictions that pay educators up to $10,000 more for their services. Unless we can reach some level of parody, this will continue. Please keep this in mind as you review the qualifications of the many candidates who will be running for offices. Education needs a friend in Anne Arundel County. Sincerely,

William T. Myers Principal

Summer Senior Meetings

Address Changes

The Counseling Office at South River High School wants to be sure all students in the class of 2015 and their parents understand what needs to be done during the senior year in order to graduate, what students need to do when applying to college, and what other post-high school planning resources are available.

If your home address has changed in the last year, you may have missed critical information about your child’s education that would have been mailed to you from the school.

Students and their parents are invited to attend ONE of the two summer Senior Meetings, which are being held on:

The Anne Arundel County Public Schools Board of Education requires that documentation be provided to prove residency

To make address corrections, it takes more than a phone call.

EVERY TIME A STUDENT’S HOME ADDRESS CHANGES.

Wednesday, July 16 Wednesday, August 6

To provide proof of residency, you must submit copies of: - a current lease or mortgage* - a utility bill

8:30 - 10:00am

(BGE or Comcast/Verizon preferred; documents must show address of service and mailing address on the same page; online bill-pay statements can not be accepted)

School Auditorium

* If the property of residence is owned or leased by someone other that the student’s parent or legal guardian, a Tenant Verification Form is required.

For families whose vacation time or other activity that conflicts with the above meetings dates, individual appointments regarding college and post-high school planning may be available. Please contact the counselor directly, via email, to request a meeting.

Summer Course Selection Changes If a schedule change is needed for the 2014/2015 school year, it is imperative that you make the request as soon as possible. To apply for a change, contact your counselor via e-mail (please see the list of counselors’ contacts is shown above) with class(es) you want to add or subtract from the schedule. Be sure to include your contact information in case the change you are asking for cannot be made. Once school begins, course changes must be requested in writing and will be permitted only if the reason for a change meets AACPS guidelines. See the Counseling Office page on the school website - www.southriverhigh.org for details.

The Anne Arundel County Public Schools requires that all children attend school within their home district. When a move takes a child outside of a school’s area of attendance, you must notify the school immediately. Contact the School Registrar at 410-956-5600, ext 236 for more information.

Summer Scholarship Information on FamilyConnection Scholarship opportunities take no summer breaks. All year long, organizations are offering money for students to get an education beyond high school. Dozens of national, local and private groups are offering scholarship competitions with summer deadlines. Want to see the list? Visit Naviance/FamilyConnection at www.southriverhigh.org today. From the Health Room: RE: Picking up student medications at the end of school. Dear Parent: According to Anne Arundel County Public Schools Medication Guidelines, all medication must be picked up by parents at the end of the school year or it will be discarded in an appropriate manner. If medication is not picked up before Wednesday, June 18th at 12:30 pm, it will be discarded according to guidelines. Please make arrangements with the health room staff to pick up your child’s medication. If you anticipate that your child will require medication next school year, we would like to encourage you to contact your physician over the summer and have the enclosed PARENT REQUEST TO ADMINISTER MEDICATION AT SCHOOL form completed. Please return the completed form by the first day of school. Please remember that no medication can be given by the school staff until this form is completed and signed by the physician and a parent. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter as we work together to meet your child’s needs. Sincerely, Cara Jean Nielsen, BSN RN School Nurse Health Room Direct Line: 410-956-1757
