Standard (1 session per week): Tuesday 6.00-9.00pm (Terms 1, 2 and 3) OR Friday 6.00-9.00pm (Terms 1, 2 and 3) Intensive (2 sessions per week): Friday 6.00-9.00pm AND Saturday 15.00-18.00 (Terms 1 & 2) Designed for complete beginners of Spanish, this 29-week (Standard) / 15-week (Intensive) module, leading to CEFR A2 (Elementary) / GCSE level,* uses a textbook, supported by a wide range of other materials. You will learn to interact with native speakers at a basic level in a range of everyday situations, such as speaking about yourself and your family, your home, your home town, your everyday routine, likes and dislikes, future and past events. You will gain a basic knowledge of a range of grammatical structures, including different grammar tenses, and will acquire enough vocabulary to ‘survive’ and deal with predictable and/or specific information in simple everyday situations. You will learn to listen for global and specific information in everyday contexts and acquire basic skills in reading and writing. You will also gain some awareness of everyday life and the diversity of cultures in the Spanish-speaking world, and will develop independent learning skills through the use of online resources. *Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Spanish 2 (Intermediate) ARIB115S4 Level 4/ 30 Credits TBC TBC CEFR A2 or equivalent Standard (1 session per week): Wednesday 6.00-9.00pm OR Thursday 6.00-9.00pm (Terms 1, 2 and 3) Intensive (2 sessions per week): Fridays 6.00-9.00pm AND Saturdays 15.00-18.00pm (Terms 2 and 3) This 29-week (Standard) / 14-week (Intensive) module, leading to CEFR B1 (Lower Intermediate)/AS level,* will develop your ability to interact in Spanish in a wider range of everyday situations (i.e. recounting events in the past, expressing wishes, making conditions and offering advice), while gaining an increased awareness of everyday life and the diverse cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. You will be introduced to media in Spanish, and by the end of the module you will be expected to understand the gist of news and other programmes in standard Spanish. The grammatical structures covered include the passive voice and passive constructions, the imperative and the subjunctive. The module uses a textbook and is supported by a wide range of authentic materials, which include video, audio, electronic and written documents. Spanish 3 (Upper Intermediate) ARIB118S5 Level 5/ 30 Credits TBC TBC CEFR B1 or equivalent Tuesday 6.00-9.00pm OR Friday 6.00-9.00pm (Terms 1, 2 and 3) This 29-week module, leading to CEFR B2 (Upper Intermediate) / A-level+,* is aimed at developing your language skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing) in Spanish to an advanced intermediate level of ability. It will also help you gain further insight into aspects of the culture and society of the Spanish speaking world. You will consolidate your knowledge of tenses in the indicative and the subjunctive and learn to use more complex sentences and structures, as well as idioms and expressions. You will be working with longer texts from a range of media, including news and current affairs programmes as well as films. * Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Spanish 4 (Advanced) ARIB119S5 Level 5 30 Credits TBC TBC CEFR B2 or equivalent Thursday 6.00-9.00pm OR Friday 6.00-9.00pm (Terms 1, 2 and 3) Leading to CEFR C1 (Advanced) / post A level,* this 29-week module builds on and broadens your existing knowledge and skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing in Spanish. The emphasis is on expanding your vocabulary, developing accuracy in oral and written communication, and learning to use more complex grammatical structures and sentences (e.g. compound sentences). You will be expected to understand a variety of texts from a range of media, including literary texts, TV programmes and films. Materials in different varieties of Latin American and Peninsular Spanish will be used for reading and listening comprehension practise.

Spanish 5 (Proficiency) ARIB120S6 Level 6 / 30 Credits TBC TBC CEFR C1 or equivalent Tuesday 6.00-9.00pm OR Wednesday 6.00-9.00pm (Terms 1, 2 and 3) This 24-week module, leading to CEFR stage C1 (Advanced) / C2 (Degree level),* aims to consolidate your fluency and accuracy of language use, both in speaking and writing. It introduces translation skills for which journalistic and literary texts are employed. You will consolidate your academic writing in the language by producing a range of essays based on the textual analysis of films and fictional and non-fictional texts, including a research project. You will improve your oral-aural skills through the completion of a radio project and use of authentic texts, films, TV and radio programmes and discussions and debates in class. The minimum exit language level for this module is CEFR C1 level but students who perform at the higher levels of achievement can be taken to have reached CEFR C2 level. * Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
