SPORTS PSYCHOLOGY COURSE SYLLABUS Monterey Trail High School Mission Statement The learning community of Monterey Trail High School will challenge ALL students to realize their greatest potential while preparing them for their future.

Course Description Sports Psychology is a 5 unit social science elective. This course will provide students with knowledge about psychological factors that affect performance in sports such as motivation, concentration, focus, confidence, anxiety, and relaxation. Students will also be introduced to mental skills that will enhance performance, make athletic participation more enjoyable, and learn skills that can be transferred to other aspects of their lives. Specific skills to be covered in this class will include: how to set measurable goals and strategies to achieve them, visualization and imagery techniques, leadership, team-building, and how to best cope and recover from injuries.

Sports Psychology - Areas of Focus Motivation and Commitment ƒ

Students will compare the differences between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation and identify their own motivations.

Goal Setting and Assessment ƒ

Students will learn how to create measurable performance and process goals and learn skills how to evaluate and assess their performance over a defined period of time.

Relaxation, Visualization, and Mental Imagery ƒ ƒ

Students will use a variety of techniques to relax to reduce stress and anxiety when competing in sports. Students will practice visualization and mental techniques to raise physical performance in their particular sport.

Focus and Concentration ƒ ƒ

Students use a variety of concentration techniques, including how to maximize focus and minimize common distractions. Student will identify common distractions in their sport and develop techniques to help them quickly refocus during competition.

Anxiety and Confidence ƒ ƒ

Students will learn how to create personalized positive affirmations to build confidence. Students will identify fear of failure, how fear of failure relates to perfectionism in sports, and learn techniques how to overcome fear of failure by developing trust and confidence in their training, preparation, and skills.

Leadership in Sports ƒ ƒ

Students will examine the stories of successful leaders and identify the major qualities of what it takes be become an effective leader. Students will compare and contrast the leadership qualities of successful high school, collegiate, and professional athletes and coaches.

Coping and Recovering from Injuries ƒ ƒ

Students will examine injury healing techniques. Students will develop a mental training program for dealing with injury.

Participating in High School and Collegiate Athletics ƒ ƒ ƒ

Students will learn the academic requirements to participate in high school and collegiate athletics. Students will identify the rules of being recruited to participate in collegiate athletics. Students will examine the rigors (physical, mental, academic, and social) of a collegiate student-athlete.

Professional Sports in America ƒ

Students will examine historical and contemporary controversies in organized and professional sports.

STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO BRING THEIR SUPPLIES TO CLASS EVERDAY!

Class Rules ƒ ƒ ƒ ƒ

No speaking when the teacher is talking. Raise hands to speak. No electronic devices - cell phones, ipods, game devices, etc. No food, drinks, or gum permitted in class. Water is allowed. No hats, headgear, or hoods allowed in class.

Cell Phone / Electronic Device Policy – “If I see it or hear it, it will be confiscated!” • • •

Students WILL NOT be allowed to use cell phones, iPods, and portable gaming devices during the school day. All electronic devices, including cell phones, must be turned off (not on vibrate mode) during class. If a student has his/her cell phone taken by the teacher, they will lose their daily participation points and have their cell phone sent to the V.P.

Discipline Policy The objective of class is to identify, discuss, learn, and practice mental skills to improve sports performance. The classroom discipline policy serves to protect class instructional time and maximize student learning. Any student behavior or action that distracts from this objective will be enforced by: STEP 1: STEP 2: STEP 3: STEP 4: STEP 5:

Tardy Policy All students are expected to be in their classroom seat with books and materials when the bell rings. If they are not, they will be considered tardy. Any student who arrives tardy (without an approved excused note) will lose their daily participation points and WILL NOT receive a stamp on homework that is due. The MTHS Tardy Policy will be strictly enforced. TARDY #1 – Teacher warning TARDY #2 – Teacher warning with a home contact TARDY #3 – Teacher assigned detention with a home & coach contact TARDY #4 – Teacher assigned detention with a home & coach contact TARDY #5 – Teacher assigned Saturday school with a home & coach contact TARDY #6 – Admin referral and student placed on NO ACTIVITIES list TARDY #7 – Admin referral with admin assigned suspension

Grading Policy Student grades are calculated using an overall total points system. Students are suggested to keep all papers until the end of the term. It is your responsibility to prove any discrepancies with the teacher’s grade sheet; check it regularly. Students will be given two days to have their parent / guardian sign their School Loop grade printouts and return it to the teacher.

Notification of academic progress, including possible failure, is done through school loop grade postings, progress reports, and/or parent contact.

Writing Assignments and Projects All writing assignments and projects are due on the assigned due date (Friday’s). Papers and projects are due within the first 5 minutes of class. There will be no exceptions. Papers will be accepted for a maximum of 50% credit on the Monday following the assigned Friday due date. If you are absent (excused, unexcused, planned or unplanned), it is YOUR responsibility to submit the paper/project on time (including student-athletes).

Quizzes •

If absent the day of the quiz, students are expected to take the quiz immediately upon their return.

Assignments & Homework Assignments are assessed on accuracy, completion, neatness, creativity, spelling and writing skills. • All homework must be turned in at the BEGINNING OF CLASS when directed by the teacher. • Work turned in after the teacher collects it from the class is considered late. • Any student who arrives to class tardy without a pass WILL NOT QUALIFY for a stamp on homework that is due. • LATE WORK IS NOT ACCEPTED, NOR WILL IT BE GRADED OR GIVEN POINTS (unless submitted with late pass) • All students receive one late homework pass each term. • Late passes will only be accepted on routine homework assignments. • Late passes cannot be used on notebooks, writing assignments, and projects. • All assignments must be properly labeled, including student name, date, and assignment title. • All work must be completed individually, unless otherwise directed. ANY WORK NOT COMPLETED AS SPECIFIED ABOVE WILL NOT BE GRADED!

Plagiarism and Copying Student Work Plagiarism is when a student copies someone else’s words or ideas without giving credit to the original author/speaker. •

A student who plagiarizes any print or online material source and presents it as his/her own will receive a zero for that assignment.



A student who copies an assignment from another shall receive a zero for that assignment and the student who allows an assignment to be copied shall also receive a zero.



A student who takes another student’s written assignment or project for personal use or academic credit without permission shall receive a zero for that assignment and will be further disciplined under the provisions for theft in the student discipline policy.

Make-Up Work Make up work will be permitted with excused absences only. Student-athletes are responsible for communicating their athletic schedules in advance to properly arrange turning in homework. Students with excused absences will receive one day for each day absent to complete assignments. No assignment credit will be given if an absence is truant or unexcused.

Films & Videos To enhance the course materials and curriculum, various clips of subject related videos will be shown. It is the policy of the Elk Grove Unified School District to provide for students visual materials which are appropriate to student viewing and which support the instructional program.

Sports Psychology Silent Sustained Reading (SSR) Program All students will participate in a twenty-minute SSR program on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday in class. Students will be allowed to check out a subject related book from Mr. Manfredi’s sports psychology reading collection and the books will remain in the classroom. All books include topics such as leadership, mental focus, goal achievement, inspirational success story, or coaching. Students will be required to complete written and oral summaries of their SSR book on a weekly basis throughout the term.

Class Participation Daily class participation and agendas will be graded each week. The agenda / participation worksheet is worth 35 points per week and is graded on student punctuality, behavior, completion of daily agendas, opener questions, group activities, and class discussions. Daily attendance is the key to participation. If a student regularly misses class, he/she is less able to participate and their participation grade will be reduced. Students who do not contribute to class discussions or activities will not receive a passing grade for their participation. Note:

Participation grades and daily agendas scores ARE NOT allowed to be made up.

Participation Rubric HOW TO EARN DAILY PARTICIPATION POINTS 1. Attend class on time and be seated when bell rings. 2. Bring notebook, and required class materials daily. 3. Write the agenda, daily quote, homework, and complete the daily focus question without talking or making a disturbance. 4. Actively participate in group / class discussions.

Fail to comply and complete requirements as mentioned above (1-4). Display negative behavior and/or be asked to leave classroom, OCS, referral.

Restroom Passes Each student will receive two passes and they can be used throughout the term or returned back to the teacher for up to 20 points of extra credit. Students may not use another student’s pass during the term and may not submit another student’s pass for extra credit. Students given permission to use the restroom will be required to wear (not hold) a yellow safety vest while outside the classroom. Failure to wear the vest appropriately will be considered a violation of school rules and will result in a loss of all future bathroom passes and a Saturday school detention. All pass requests must be approved by the teacher.
