A pioneer of modern architecture Hans Scharoun is one of the most important architects of the 20th century; as a proponent of organic architecture, he created unconventional and imaginative buildings which adapt to users’ needs in a dynamic way. His oeuvre includes family residences and housing estates but also encompasses the German embassy in Brazil, and urban icons such as the Berlin Philharmonie. The book, a cooperation with Baukunstarchiv (the architecture archive) of the Akademie der Künste, Berlin, documents the entire range

of known completed buildings by Scharoun, including, for the first time, early works in East Prussia. The specially taken photographs by Carsten Krohn, together with the historic photographs and plans from the HansScharoun-Archiv offer a new overview of this expressive organic architecture.

Unrivalled monograph By the author of the successful book “Mies van der Rohe. The Built Work”

Carsten Krohn studied architecture, art history and urbanism and is the author of numerous publications.

A landmark and citizens’ venue

English

The Elbphilharmonie is Hamburg’s new landmark and is already an icon of contemporary architecture. In this book, Herzog & de Meuron document their project: extensive archive material, plans, and photographs are used to illustrate the process of the creation of this once-in-a-hundred-years building from the first sketch and the various design stages with their many challenges, through to completion of the finished building. The dialog between historical brick plinth and contemporary glass crystal, the combination of different functions, the development

of the spectacular large concert hall, the design of a public plaza for the population are just some of the many aspects that contribute to the attractiveness of the building. Gerhard Mack is editor for art, architecture, and design for NZZ am Sonntag and editor of the Complete Works of Herzog & de Meuron.

Hani Rashid, co-founder of Asymptote, the visionary New York architectural practice, has been heading up Studio Hani Rashid in Vienna since 2011. The curriculum focuses on the development of conceptual and practical skills for creating future-oriented architecture – on experimental investigation of atmospheric, phenomenal, and visual effects, which provides intelligent solutions for contemporary forms of dwelling and being but which should also satisfy “feasibility criteria”. Re: Futures uses texts, digital visualizations and descriptive architectural sketches to document the work created over recent years, and thereby reveals a spectrum of contemporary design methods and future-oriented architectural themes.

New life for old villages

English

Caminada is known far beyond the boundaries of Switzerland – as an architect who has initiated the design and construction of the award-winning renewal of his home community Vrin in Grisons, and as Professor of Architecture and Design at ETH Zurich. At Valendas, which once was a thriving village but recently suffered from rural exodus, he revitalized – commissioned by a community trust – a country inn, the community hall, and the village square, and has thereby helped to avert the impending death of the village.

The work of Vladimír Dedecek (born 1929) is considered as a prime example of an independent socialist version of the Modern style. His main commissions were prestigious buildings designed and built between the 1960s and 1980s. The most important of these are still being used as originally intended. The monograph consists of three parts. It explains the method of research and the concept of the book; it analyzes and interprets four buildings as examples: the Boarding School in Modra (1972–1978), the Slovak National Archive (1972–1983), the Supreme Court (1977–1990), and the Slovak National Gallery (1967–1979) and informs about another thirteen key buildings forming the basis of possible interpretations, and is followed by the list of works, the bibliography, and the biographical details.

The facade is the building’s interface with its environment. It is here that building physics parameters such as heat, humidity, sound and light interact with the building. All these influences need to be controlled by the building envelope in order to ensure the comfort of the user and the functional performance of the architecture. This introduction explains the most important phenomena and then relates them to design and building practice – which materials react in which way to these factors? How do facade systems deal with heat, humidity, sound and light? This practice-oriented book, which is the result of cooperation between an architect and a structural engineer, describes the most important facade materials and constructions under the aspect of their building physics performance. On color and its spatial effect

English

The interaction between color and architecture determines our perception of space, and defines the tectonic relationships. The fascinating spatial potential of color, and the multi-layered dimensions of interpretation in the experience of color are design and communication means which, however, are often not fully used – color oscillates between autonomy and functional purpose, and should be understood as a distinct “material” that can be used as part of the design. The book focuses both on the tangible aspects and design criteria of color, and on

its indeterminate nature and its experience value. Using examples in art and architecture, the spatial interdependency of color is illustrated, as is its interaction with structure, light, and geometry. With an increasing interest in quality of nutrition, health and improved civic life, urban food production has begun to occur inside the growing cities worldwide and risks to compete with other urban needs. The book introduces typologies, tools, evaluation methods and strategies, and shows the practical applications of the methods. Multiple projects illustrate solutions that augment quality via the insertion of food production entities into the urban realm. Food Urbanism is a versatile tool that can be insightful during landscape planning and urban design work during the preliminary, schematic and design-development proposal. Case studies at multiple scale, macro to micro, illustrate this new movement.

Once Walter Benjamin and Asja Lacis used the term “porosity” with reference to Naples’ urban characteristics – spaces merging into each other and providing the backdrop for the unforeseen – improvisation as a way of life. Today, the term “porosity” in this context is increasingly used conceptually. Well-known authors from the worlds of architecture, town planning, and landscape design embark on a search for new concepts for a life-enhancing, user-friendly city – with reference to this enigmatic term. The term refers to the overlaying and interweaving of spaces and structures, to urban textures and their architectural properties and qualities – to cities with radically mixed urban functions.

English

Bicycles as a means of transport in cities are playing an ever more important role. The reasons are: reduction of motorcar traffic, sustainable traffic planning, reduction of noise and exhaust emissions, enhancement of the value of public space, healthier form of transport, savings potential in national health services and infrastructure expenditure. The book illustrates urban design ideas and architectural projects which go far beyond purely redesigning road layouts; its eight essays focus on the trend in urban design,

landscape design, and traffic planning, it introduces eight exemplary bicycle traffic concepts in various cities (Barcelona, Copenhagen, Karlsruhe, New York, and Paris amongst others), and presents 28 forward-looking individual bicycle infrastructure projects. Once the design has been completed, the architects prepare the tender documents, and provide support during the tender procedure. For commissioning the building works it is necessary to set up building contracts which contain standard content as well as individual provisions. The building contract and its extensive specifications are the basis for the building work; they must be understood by the supervising architect and implemented to create the building. The complexity of building contracts is increased by the fact that there is hardly a building contract that does not have to be modified after it has been signed. Basic Building Contract offers the typical structures and explanations, as well as the tools for creating project-specific contracts and understanding the inherent complexity. During the first five years of a new architectural practice, typical problems arise that have to be managed. Based on the reports of young architectural practices, which were gathered in workshops throughout Europe, this manual analyzes commonly observed issues, and offers approaches to resolving them. What is special: the approaches were developed from daily working experience, and can be realistically implemented, not least because they are aimed at the different phases of a developing practice – “Getting started”, “Making mistakes”, “Going public”, “Choosing a specialization”, and “Doing competitions”. For the second edition the texts were extended and corrected; statistics and charts were brought up to date. The cool presentation remains as appealing as in the first issue.

The International Building Exhibition 1984/87 in Berlin constitutes one of the most remarkable examples to discuss “open architecture”. Almost 10,000 dwellings of public and subsidized housing were newly constructed or restored in the Kreuzberg districts adjacent to the Berlin Wall, inhabited about halfway by immigrants. Involving close to 350 German and international architectural design practices, IBA unfolded as a testing ground for participatory, postmodernist and poststructuralist debates; as well as the relation between citizenship laws and housing. The renowned author Esra Akcan, related in many ways to Turkey, Berlin and the USA, narrates in urban explorations, immigrants’ biographies and archival studies the history and reverberations of this architectural-political event. Architecture, topography, landscape

English / German

Many people long to live surrounded by nature. Correspondingly, designing for this goal demands utmost sensitivity. With meticulous concepts, architects must take account of energy and materials issues and react to the topography of the building plot. This book presents selected houses in the Arctic vegetation of Iceland, at the foot of a volcano in the Azores, or in the rock massif of the Alps.

Modern garden design – newly discovered

English / German

Leberecht Migge is one of the best known – and least known garden designers of classical modernism. As a protagonist or even originator of landscape architecture in tune with innovative and socially involved building, he promoted that every household should have a garden. All his design work was deemed lost until recently, so that his oeuvre was accessible only in publications. In a spectacular discovery, the Archive of Swiss Landscape Architecture has found 322 sketches, drawings and plans of all kinds by Leberecht Migge, comprising also hitherto unknown designs for private gardens.

A relevant selection of this original material is published here for the first time, in bestquality presentation. The volume is rounded off by an assessment of the significance of these designs. In 2018, the artist Elisa Rose and the musician Gary Danner will have been involved in digital art for 30 years as STATION ROSE/STR. During that time, there was a transformation from a purely analog to a new, irretrievably interwoven digital/analog world. Back in 1988, STR posited: “The outcome of this history will take place everywhere”. Now it really is taking place everywhere – the world is permanently networked and monitored, it is more transparent, but also more controlled. How have art and music changed? On the subject of “30.0”, STR unfold their topics of recent years: exhibitions, installations, performances, the Net, nature, compositions, TV and radio productions. With texts by international experts. The artists Elisa Rose & Gary Danner (STATION ROSE) live and work in Vienna.

The last volume of the MUSA collection of contemporary art is dedicated to the 1990s. The boundaries and hierarchies between the genres of high and popular art have long disappeared; drawing and painting is tied up with punk; digital photography and computer art – especially video and the recording of the artist’s own performance approaches in parallel to painting or object art – pursue broad communication strategies; video sculptures, conceptual artistic research, and the integration of kitsch and irony display great diversity; artistic strategies are extended to include social issues such as the transgender debate and post-colonial investigations. Essays by well-known authors and numerous illustrations shed light on the artistic trends of this decade.

Referencing the animal kingdom, Ballhausen’s twelve literary texts create an imaginary zoological scenario. Based on Stomachion, the 14-part mathematical mind game, Peytchinska’s digital drawings develop a network – a theoretical animal (Origamion) that moves through the book space with the folding action. Its lines, which should be understood as boundary as well as an extension of language, interweave with the text as they move through the book. Literature and drawing enter into a dialog – an atlas of language art manifests in the form of a new order. In this way, Fauna can be experienced as a thinking space that is to be opened – without however interfering with the readability of this artistic enterprise; drawings and text meet as actors on the stage of the book space. From an intercultural perspective, this book focuses on aesthetic strategies and forms of representation in premodern Christian and Islamic sepulchral art. Seeing the tomb as an interface for eschatological, political, and artistic debate, the contributions analyze the diversity of memorial space configurations. The subjects range from the complex interaction between architecture and tomb topography through to questions relating to the funereal expression of power and identity, and to practices of ritual realization in the context of individual and collective memory.

In the modern lexicon, ‘object’ refers to an entity that is materially constituted, spatially defined, and functionally determined. In contrast, the Latin word ‘fantasia’ has, since antiquity, referred to an apparition or the ability to imagine something that could be equally an object, an image, or a concept. This tension prompts further inquiry into the interrelations and differences between the experience of tangible objects (their perception and handling) and the creation of new objects (their conception and formation). What correlations exist between object fantasies, the self-consciousness of subjects, and the concrete and imagined conditions of human beings’ social lives? By addressing these questions, this interdisciplinary book opens new perspectives in the field of object studies.

With “La Gerusalemme liberata” Torquato Tasso revived the ancient genre of epic poetry. Already during his lifetime, his work became subject to an intensive discourse on the images used – both the military events of the crusades, and the tragic love stories moved artists and the public. At the same time, Tasso’s “Discorsi dell’arte poetica” became the blueprint for the theory and practice of historic visual art. Around 1800, the focus finally moved to the personality of the poet as a model of the modern artist who suffers in and from the world. In a dialog between literary science and art history, new research is presented on the subject of Tasso and the pictures. The focus is on the ekphrastic tradition and important artistic interpretations of Tasso in pictures – like that of Nicolas Poussin.

The book examines military paintings in France in the 1850s and 1860s, when the genre experienced a new lease of life. It recreates the paintings’ art-historical, historical and social context, and considers the explosion of military subjects in their own right rather than as a consequence of war reporting. The paintings’ entertainment value effectively communicated political agendas, catering to the emerging phenomenon of mass spectatorship and giving rise to innovative compositions. The book also looks at the other side of the artistic spectrum, proposing that smaller formats adapted the sentimental techniques of military memoirs to focus on the soldiers’ experiences of warfare and to elicit a critique of war. Art historians have been facing the challenge – even from before the advent of globalization – of writing for an international audience and translating their own work into a foreign language – whether forced by exile, voluntary migration, or simply in order to reach wider audiences. Migrating Histories of Art aims to study the biographical and academic impact of these self-translations, and how the adoption and processing of foreign-language texts and their corresponding methodologies have been fundamental to the disciplinary discourse of art history. While often creating distinctly “multifaceted” personal biographies and establishing an international disciplinary discourse, self-translation also fosters the creation of instances of linguistic and methodological hegemony.

Writing a history of art dealing in the Third Reich presents a special challenge, not only because of the difficult situation regarding source material. The actors’ activities are enmeshed in outrageous contradictions involving complicity and sabotage. The range of issues includes the day-to-day business of art dealers through to the resistance to restrictive regulations, from auction trade through to black market, from numerous crimes involving not only Jewish collectors and dealers, through to art theft in countries occupied by German forces. In this book, art historians and economic historians investigate the art market and its mechanisms under National Socialism, the role of art theft and, in particular, that of modern and “degenerate” works of art in the art market. Covering several storage formats from 8mm films of the 1900s, through the analogue videotapes of the 1970s, to the compression algorithms of the 2000s, this work examines the effects that the shrinkage of complex machines, media formats, and processing operations has had on the dissemination of moving images.
