The English author Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832–1898), better known by his pen name Lewis Caroll, crafted many famous writings, including both Alice in Wonderland and Jabberwocky. Being fascinated with words, Caroll created many nonsensical (yet understandable) words by combining other normal words into one — something called a portmanteau. A common-day example might be the word “cyborg,” formed from “cybernetic” and “organism”. Jabberwocky is probably one of the greatest nonsense poems in the English language. Interestingly, Caroll wrote the poem as a parody designed to show how not to write a poem. Metsa Telegramm (literally translated “Forest Telegram”) celebrates the growing world-wide concern for the environment — a true “green” song. The Estonian composer Uno Naissoo (1928–1980) was a lecturer at his alma mater, the Tallinn Music Academy, and worked in a variety of media including jazz, symphonic music, and film scores. He wrote the music to this song first, and then asked the Estonian poet Ira Lember (b. 1926) to write the words to fit.

The Jabberwock, as illustrated by Sir John Tenniel. This image appeared in the original printing of the poem.

Aaron Copland (1900–1990) wrote, “Everyone seemed to enjoy singing and hearing the first set of folk song settings so much that I decided to arrange a second group of five.” Zion’s Walls, a revivalist song with words and music credited to John G. McCurry, was used again by Copland in his opera, The Tender Land. Of Copland’s legacy, BBC Music Magazine states, “… he invigorated the lives of millions of ordinary music-lovers… Whether nervy or calm, harsh or homely, Copland’s scores bounce, ring, vibrate and shine like nobody else’s.” The Latin text Jubilate Deo (“sing joyfully to God”) is one of the more familiar sacred Latin texts. It comes directly from Psalm 100, although there are numerous Biblical passages with that same theme. Emily Crocker is recognized nationally as a leading expert in children’s choirs. As a composer, Ms. Crocker’s works have been performed around the world and she has received ASCAP awards for concert music since 1986. In 1994, she founded the Milwaukee Children’s Choir, which started with 35 children a year and now serves over 300 children. The Pulitzer Prize-winning author James Agee (1909–1955) wrote the poem “Sure on this shining night,” which American composer Samuel Barber (1910–1981) set in 1938 for soprano and orchestra. He later (1941) wrote a choral setting of the piece which has remained a standard in the serious choral repertoire of the twentieth century. Barber’s work is lushly melodic and has often been described as neo-Romantic — a prime example of this sentiment is his best known work, Adagio for Strings.

Georgia on My Mind is arguably one of the most popular official state songs. Stuart Gorrell (1901–1963) wrote the lyrics in 1930 for Hoagy Carmichael’s (1899–1981) sister, Georgia. Ray Charles’s 1960 recording of it became a major hit, and on April 24, 1979, the state of Georgia officially adopted it as its state song (an especially interesting point, since previous to that year, Charles had been banned from performing in the state of Georgia due to his support of the Civil Rights movement). John Leavitt (b. 1956) is a composer, conductor, teacher, and church musician, whose music is widely published. Leavitt is a lifetime member of the American Choral Directors Association and is a member of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP), from which he has received annual recognition for his achievements. His original composition Festival Sanctus is a setting of the mass texts Sanctus and Benedictus, and has been a popular choice for choral festivals and honor choirs for over twenty years. It’s an old story: Girl meets soldier, girl provides soldier with all his material needs (anything else is left to the imagination of the audience — remember, this is children’s song), soldier (after leading girl on) finally owns up to why he can’t be with her. This anonymous text has been set many times, but Paul Halley’s (b. 1952) arrangement of Soldier, Won’t You Marry Me? is quite clever with its use of unusual chord structure and meter changes (3/4, 6/8, and even 5/4). Halley is a principal member of The Paul Winter Consort and has earned four Grammy Awards for his contributions as featured writer and performer on many Consort recordings. Rudyard Kipling (1865–1936) begins chapter seven of his classic The Jungle Book with a mother seal singing softly to her young pup. The remarkably-talented young composer Eric Whitacre (b. 1970) says of his piece The Seal Lullaby, “I was struck so deeply by those first beautiful words, and a simple, sweet Disney-esque song came gushing out of me. … [I] sang it to my baby son every night to get him to go to sleep. (Success rate: less than 50%).” The Longest Time is a doo-wop single by Billy Joel (b. 1949). The song appeared on his 1983 album An Innocent Man and reached number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song features Joel on lead vocals and all backing vocals. Joel recorded fourteen different background tracks which were mixed into the song. Only one musical instrument, a bass guitar, is present in the song; all other sounds in the song are Joel’s vocals, along with percussive sounds such as finger snaps and hand claps. Since releasing his first hit song, Piano Man in 1973, Joel has become the sixth best-selling recording artist and the third best-selling solo artist in the United States. Joel had Top 40 hits in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, all of which he wrote himself. He is also a six-time Grammy Award winner who has been nominated for 23 Grammy Awards throughout his career. The program notes are provided by the Middle School choirs.

Cheryl West is honored tonight by the Roland-Story Music Department for her retirement and her 32½ years of dedicated service to teaching, 25 of which have been here at Roland-Story. Cheryl received her Bachelor of Music Education from Wartburg College, and her MA in Education from Viterbo University. Prior to joining Roland-Story in 1989, Mrs. West taught at Midland School (Wyoming, Iowa), Clarksville, and Keota. Cheryl has two sons: Eric (Amanda) West of Polk City, and Jonathan West of Cedar Falls. She recently welcomed a new granddaughter, Shea Skylar West, to the family last December. It is not hard to imagine how Mrs. West will fill her time in retirement! Choirs under Mrs. West’s direction have consistently earned Division I ratings in the IHSMA Small Group and Large Group contests. More importantly, students in her choirs have learned of the great joy it is to create musical excellence. This is a gift that our students will carry with them the rest of their lives, and is due in large part to the work Cheryl has done and the craft and artistry she has shared. Congratulations, Mrs. West!

Tok, tok, tok, the woodpecker knocks. Tok, tok, tok, “Don’t break the trees’ branches!” Tok, tok, tok, above the forest amid the silence, Tok, tok, tok, woodpecker’s message everywhere is echoing. Preserve beauty, forest life! Be a friend to every tree! And let’s protect the forest’s beautiful garment. Then the forest for us murmurs always. And birds’ nests are protected, so that joyful birds’ calls can echo.

Festival Sanctus

Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus, Dominus Deus Sabaoth! Hosanna Deo, Hosanna in excelsis! Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domine Dei. Pleni sunt coeli et terra gloria tua!

El grillo è buon cantore, Che tienne longo verso, Dalle beve grillo canta.

Ma non fa come gli altri uccelli. Come li han cantato un poco, Van’ de fatto in altro loco. Sempre el grillo sta pur saldo.

Quando la maggiorè il caldo Al’ hor canta sol per amore.

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts! Hosanna to God, Hosanna in the highest! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. Heaven and earth are full of thy glory!

El Grillo (The Cricket) The cricket is a good singer who can hold a long note, Give him a drink so he can go on singing. But he doesn’t act like the birds. If they’ve sung a little bit, they go somewhere else. The cricket remains steadfast. When the weather gets hotter he sings only for love.
