THOUGHTS

from

Father Mat

SERVE WITH HUMILITY The central theme of today’s readings is a strong invitation and challenge to render humble, selfless, diligent, committed and loving service to others in the community, without expecting honor or rewards. Today’s Gospel is a warning against hypocrisy and status-seeking, given to the early Church. In the first reading, the prophet Malachi condemns the irresponsible, proud and lazy priests of his day.  In the second reading, St. Paul presents himself as an ideal example of servant leadership in a serving Christian community.  In today’s Gospel, Jesus offers a word of judgment against contemporary religious leaders who are more concerned about self-promotion than service to others.  Christ-like leadership calls for integrity and honesty from all those in authority, whether priests, parents, teachers or politicians. There should be in leaders no double standards. Rather, there should grow a deep sense of equality with, and mutual respect between, leaders and those they rule. Each should seek to serve the other.  Service, not status, is the mark of this new community, and true humility is the only position its members should seek. We need to become servant leaders in a serving community.  The Church is a servant community in which the hungry are to be filled; the ignorant are to be taught; the homeless to receive shelter; the sick to be cared for; the distressed, consoled; and the oppressed set free so that they may more fully realize their human potential and more readily enjoy life with God.  Hence, the leaders should have a spirit of humble service in thought, word and deed.  The measure of a true Christian is not how many servants he has, but how many men he serves. We need to live the faith we profess. Religious people are all too often like the Pharisees and scribes, laying heavy loads on other people’s shoulders without lifting a finger to help them.

Instead of judging the poor, we should be serving them through our efforts for economic justice.  Instead of criticizing those of other races, we should be serving them through our efforts for racial justice. Instead of ignoring the homeless, we should be serving them through efforts to supply them with adequate housing. We need to live the Faith we profess. Our Faith tells us that we are all brothers and sisters, children of the same heavenly Father.  The only way for us to practice our Faith is to build a human community of love and justice. We need to learn the art of self-criticism and accept the responsibilities which go with our titles. Instead of criticizing others for their failures, let us ask whether we are different from them in discharging our duties in the family and in the parish community. Let us remember that our titles should remind us of our specific responsibilities in society and our obligation to discharge them faithfully. PILGRIMAGE TO ITALY, BOSNIA & POLAND As of today, we have 26 persons who have signed up to go with me for the pilgrimage to Italy, Bosnia and Poland from May 14 to 28, 2018.  For the color brochure and registration form please contact me at mvellankal@stbonaventure. net. Since we can take a few more persons on this pilgrimage, you may please pass the information to your families and friends.

PARISH LIFE thoughts OAKLAND DIOCESE HONORS OUR CYO LEADER Our parishioner, Joe Sullivan, was recently honored by the Oakland Diocese with the Lifetime Achievement Award for his years of service to our CYO track and Cross-Country program. Joe is one of those quiet servants who lives and shares his faith daily, making a difference in the lives of hundreds of young people.  Joe started volunteering with our CYO track and field team twenty years ago and expanded it to include cross-country.  The award recognized him for “many years of unselfish commitment, service and dedication to the youth of the Oakland Diocese.” These are perfect works to describe Joe.

HELPING OUR NEIGHBORS AFFECTED BY FIRES The fires have had a devastating effect on the Napa Valley region. And our brothers and sisters in the Santa Rosa Diocese are just starting the lengthy process of rebuilding their lives.  We want to support them. Bishop Barber is inviting a special collection for the victims of the fire. We have scheduled the Collection for November 11. You will be invited to give that weekend. Or you can go to our parish web site and follow the link on the front page to give electronically.  CHILD CARE HELP NEEDED Do you like being around young children? Do you have Wednesday mornings free and want to meet some of the parish families? The Moms’ group meets the first and third Wednesday of the month from 9:45-11:30am. They are desperately in need of babysitters. We need 2 adults to watch their children while the moms grow in faith and community. You will need to be finger-printed and ‘Safe Environment’ trained. If we can gather a group of adults, they can rotate. If interested or want more information, please contact Eileen 672-5800 x2217 or [email protected] NO KNEELING REQUIRED-JUST DRIVETHRU

St. Bonaventure is taking prayer to the parking lot. There will be no need to turn off the ignition or get out of the car. Drivers can just set the brake and take a moment to have the prayer team be present to them, to hear their request and pray with them. Drivers can take a quick turn into the St. Bonaventure parking lot and look for the banner on the left. There they will find volunteers to hear their prayer request and say a prayer with them. Then back on the road, having shared some of their concerns and needs with God. We are living in a time when people don’t have a lot of time on the go, so we wanted to provide something like drive-thru food, drive-thru coffee -- why not drive-thru God? God on the Go. Monday through Friday from 5:00-6:00pm, beginning Monday, November 13. Pass the word. Invite your friends to stop in and spend a minute with God at St. Bonaventure.

The leadership team of our parish has asked all the staff, Pastoral Council and Finance Council members to read the book Rebuilt. Fr. Mat invites all parishioners to read the book as well. Drawing on the wisdom gleaned from thriving megachurches and innovative business leaders, while anchoring their vision in the Eucharistic heart of the Catholic faith, Fr. Michael White and lay associate Tom Corcoran present the compelling and inspiring story of how they brought their parish back to life. Copies can be purchased in the parish office for $15.00.

PENSAMIENTOS

de

Padre Mat

-5:30pm Viernes: 8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

FAITH DIRECT
