OUR LADY OF FATIMA MASS AND ROSARY On Friday, October 13, we conclude the Centennial Year celebration of Our Lady of Fatima. To mark the occasion, we will have a special Mass at St. Bonaventure church at 7:30 p.m. on that day. The Mass will be followed by a candlelit procession reciting the Holy Rosary. I cordially invite all our parishioners to join me in honoring Mother Mary as we close the ‘Our Lady of Fatima’ 100th anniversary celebration. Our Lady appeared six times to the three shepherd children – Lucia, Jacinta and Francisco – between May 13 and October 13, 1917. Lucia was ten years old, Francisco would be nine in June and Jacinta had just turned seven in March, when on May 13th, 1917, they chose to pasture their sheep in a hilly depression owned by Lucia’s father and known as the Cova da Iria, or Cove of Irene. It was there, with one exception, that the Blessed Virgin, under the title of Our Lady of the Rosary, appeared on six occasions in 1917, and a seventh time in 1920 (to Lucia alone). As important as the place and the time was the situation of the world. At that moment, the First World War raged in Europe, introducing mankind to the most savage forms of warfare seen to that date. In far-off Moscow Lenin prepared the revolution that would overturn the Russian social order in November 1917 and eventually engulf almost half the peoples of the earth. It was in that context that heaven sent a message to earth to provide the antidote to the moral and social evils of the world - the message of Fatima. The closeness of Our Lady to us and her call to return to the Gospel through prayer, sacrifice and conversion are as important for us today as they were in 1917. The month of October is the month of the Holy Rosary. Sister Maria Lucia of Fatima says: “The Most Holy Virgin in these last times in which we live has given a new efficacy to the recitation of the Rosary, to such an extent that there is no problem, no matter how difficult it is, whether temporal or above all spiritual, in the personal life of each one of us, of our families… of the life of people and nations, that cannot be

solved by the Rosary. There is no problem, I tell you, no matter how difficult it is, that we cannot resolve by the prayer of the Holy Rosary.” The feast of Our Lady of the Rosary was instituted to honor Mary for the Christian victory over the Turks at Lepanto on October 7, 1571. Pope St. Pius V and all Christians had prayed the Rosary for victory. The Rosary, or the Psalter of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is one of the best prayers to Mary, the Mother of God.

LITURGY & PRAYER CLOSING CELEBRATION IN HONOR OF OUR LADY OF FATIMA’S CENTENNIAL YEAR: Friday, October 13 at 7:30pm in the Church

Join Fr. David and other parishioners as we discuss the immigration issue within our Catholic teachings and how we receive them. We are hearing and seeing the Bishops and Pope speak up on a number of Catholic Social teachings that are challenging. Some we agree with and some we don’t. If I disagree am I a “bad Catholic”? If I agree, what do I do?

We will be closing the Centennial Celebration of Our Lady of Fatima with a Mass and procession. A simple reception follows in the Hospitality Room. People are welcome to bring cookies, pastries or bottled water. Please come and join us.

We will use a letter written by the Bishop of El Paso as a starting point for our dialogue. To be prepared, please read the document before our meeting. It is available on the front page of our web site: www.stbonaventure.net and copies are available in the parish foyer.

MINISTER OF HOSPITALITY TRAINING: MONDAY, OCTOBER 23 @ 7:30PM

Tens of thousands of devotees take to the streets of Lima to carry a painting of El Señor de los Milagros; also known as the Purple Christ or Christ of Pachacamilla. On this mural appears the crucified Black Jesus. Above the Cross are the Holy Spirit and God the Father. Below and to the right of Jesus is his mother, the Virgin Mary, with her heart pierced by a lance of sorrow and to her right at the foot of the cross is Mary Magdalene.

Are you interested in meeting other parishioners and being involved in the Mass? If so, please consider becoming a Minister of Hospitality. These ministers greet and welcome the community at each weekend liturgy, pass the collection baskets, direct people forward to receive Eucharist, and distribute bulletins after Mass. Volunteers of all ages, from 6th grade on, are invited to participate.  This ministry is extremely important in creating a welcoming atmosphere at our Sunday liturgies, and more Ministers of Hospitality are greatly needed for all weekend Masses.

The painting is reported to have been created by an Angolan slave, in 1651 on a wall where the church of Las Nazarenas stands today. Despite irreparable damage to the surrounding area over the centuries, including an earthquake in 1746 that leveled the neighboring buildings, the painting still survived. Every October since the 18th century a religious brotherhood, La Hermandad del Señor de los Milagros has arranged an annual procession of the painting in honor of the Cristo Moreno (Purple Christ). During the procession, male devotees organize into squads of bearers that carry the icon through the streets of Central Lima. Thousands of purple-tunic clad believers take to the streets, sing hymns and pray as the two-ton painting is held aloft during its journey. This tradition is extended all over the world, including our own beautiful city of Concord at Saint Bonaventure Church.

A training session for all new Ministers of Hospitality will be held on Monday, October 23, from 7:30-8:30 PM in the Church.  If you are interested in participating, even if you can’t make this particular date, please contact Anthony Arteaga at [email protected] or by calling the parish office.

INVITATION TO VOLUNTEER LOAVES & FISHES VOLUNTEER NEEDED Loaves and Fishes needs volunteers to help serve once a month on the second Tuesday of each month and, on certain months, the 5th Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 1:45 p.m., in the St. Vincent de Paul Dining Room located at 1415 Simpson Ct. off Gladstone, Pittsburg. This is a wonderful way to live one of the corporal works of mercy. If you are interested, please call Mary Ann Kelly at 925686-3815.

An opportunity to sit quietly with God – not asking for anything and letting the worries and busyness of the world go away. We start with a short reflection, enter into 20 minutes of silent prayer and end with the Our Father. Join us Tuesday 4:05-4:30pm. Just come when you can. Call Eileen (672-5800 x2217) if you have questions. REBUILT The leadership team of our parish has asked all the staff, Pastoral Council and Finance Council members to read the book Rebuilt. Fr. Mat invites all parishioners to read the book as well. Drawing on the wisdom gleaned from thriving megachurches and innovative business leaders, while anchoring their vision in the Eucharistic heart of the Catholic faith, Fr. Michael White and lay associate Tom Corcoran present the compelling and inspiring story of how they brought their parish back to life. Copies can be purchased in the parish office for $15.00.

PENSAMIENTOS de

Padre Mat
