An Epiphany Message Three new figures appear on the horizon of Christmas: the Wiseman coming from the east. God’s epiphany draws near. In the liturgy of the Church, the Feast of Epiphany means manifestation, because God reveals Himself and shows forth His glory. This understanding of the feast makes us think first of the star that appears overhead to guide the Wiseman. We also think of their long journey from the east following that distant star on the horizon. But there is a deeper meaning to this understanding of Epiphany. The Holy Spirit invites us to consider the inner path these wise ones have trod. This is an inner path to God and the manifestation of His glory. It begins with the mysterious encounter of the human intellect and human heart with the light of God Himself. In the words of St. John, “The real light which gives light to every man was coming into the world” (Jn 1:9). These Wiseman were undoubtedly following this light before the star appeared to them. God was speaking to them in the wonder of all created things, saying, “I am. I exist. I am the Creator and the Lord of the whole world.” At a certain moment, beyond the veil, he drew them even closer to Himself. He began to reveal to them the truth of His coming into the world. They were made aware of the divine design of salvation in some way they could not fully understand. And the Wiseman responded with faith to that inner epiphany with God. During the time of Epiphany, the liturgy of the Church leads us on our own journey toward Jerusalem. We turn our hearts toward the holy city, which has become “the city of the great king.” Even if the people of Jerusalem are unaware that the King of Glory has been born in their midst, we still rejoice. For Jerusalem is the city of the great King. May the Wiseman be our guide so that our daily walk will always have as its aim Jesus Himself, the eternal Son of God and the Son of Mary. Jesus And Me Update Over the last several weeks, the children attending JAM learned about the Advent Wreath and how to prepare their hearts for Christmas. Each child made their own wreath to take home and share with their families. They learned about a Jesse Tree and that we are all part of God’s family. As Christmas drew near, animals and shepherds were added to our stable and then the Holy Family. “Happy birthday, Jesus” from your JAM friends! JAM time happens Sundays during the 10 o’clock mass. Children ages 3 to 3rd grade are invited. We also welcome middle-school students and adults to read stories and help these young ones with crafts. Catholic Central’s 30th Annual Topper Dinner and Auction/Car Raffle CCHS’s Annual Dinner & Auction, held at the Veterans Terrace on December 6th, proved to be another successful event for the local Catholic high school. Guests enjoyed a delicious array of hor d’oeuvres and a delicious dinner served by Gooseberries' Courtyard Catering. Over 250 items were auctioned off through silent and oral bids and included: gourmet dinners, services, vacations, and even a Springer Spaniel puppy, to name a few!! The evening concluded with dancing to music provided by 2013 alum, Jeremy Kuta. The $15,000 grand prize (car raffle) winner was: Joyce Spiegelhoff 2nd through 4th prize winners were: $750-Monica Hochevar $500-Hermelinda Chavez $200-Laura McCarthy Although final numbers are not yet available, 472 car raffle tickets were sold and $16,000 was raised for the school's new bell/phone system!

MINISTERIO HISPANO REFLEXIÓN DE LA EPIFANIA DEL SEŇOR (Dia de Reyes) Hoy celebramos la fiesta de la Epifanía, es decir, de la manifestación de Jesús como Señor de todos los Pueblos. Es una gran fiesta para nosotros los cristianos, de manera especial celebrada en Oriente, por su significado: Dios se ha manifestado en Jesús, como un Dios universal, un Dios de la humanidad y no sólo de un Pueblo. EL TEXTO Mateo resalta en el texto el reconocimiento de Jesús como Rey (oro), Señor (incienso) y Redentor (mirra) por parte de los magos de Oriente; y el rechazo de Jesús como rey de Israel por parte de Herodes y las autoridades judías. Estos dos temas serán abordados constantemente por Mateo: el carácter universal del mensaje de Jesús y el rechazo de las autoridades religiosas del mensaje de Jesús. ACTUALIDAD La fiesta de la Epifanía tiene su centro en el reconocimiento que los magos de Oriente le dan a Jesús como Rey, Señor y Redentor; por eso se le llama fiesta de la Epifanía o Manifestación de Dios al mundo. Considero que esta fiesta nos debe ayudar a reflexionar sobre la universalidad del mensaje de Cristo. A veces los cristianos hemos “acaparado” de tal manera el mensaje de Cristo que casi hemos hecho imposible que alguien más se enriquezca de él. Tenemos que ser consciente que Cristo vino a redimir a toda la humanidad y por ello su mensaje ha de ser universal. Lo grandioso de este acontecimiento de los magos es que hace que Jesús “evangelice” todavía sin hablar; es decir, ese pequeño niño, recostado en un pesebre, era ya un mensajede salvación que movilizó a estos magos a buscarlo para adorarlo. ¿Cuál era este mensaje que transformó la vida de estos magos? La persona de Jesús representa para todos los hombre la encarnación del hombre perfecto; analicemos en qué sentido sucede esto. El hombre es un ser que encuentra su realización en la apertura al otro, y su realización perfecta en su apertura a Dios. Por lo tanto, en Jesús encontramos al hombre que está abierto de tal manera a Dios, que es Dios mismo hecho hombre, y también esta abierto a los demás de tal manera que todo el sentido de su existencia somos nosotros. Por esto, el mensaje de Jesús no se puede limitar a unas cuantas prácticas religiosas. Su mensaje llega a lo más profundo del ser humano; él es la realización plena de toda aspiración del hombre. Por eso en él todo hombre puede encontrar un mensaje de esperanza y salvación. ¿Qué nos enseña esta realidad a nosotros? Bueno, creo yo que muchas veces hemos reducido nuestro seguimiento de Cristo a unas prácticas religiosas, donde ser cristiano es: bautizarse, ir a misa, y seguir más o menos los diez mandamientos. Pero la fiesta de hoy nos dice que eso no es lo único de nuestro cristianismo. Ser cristianos es aceptar que en Cristo encontramos una manera perfecta de ser humanos, que en él encontramos el camino perfecto para hacer la voluntad de Dios sobre nosotros. Ser cristianos es vivir desde la verdad, haciendo el bien y buscando radicalmente el amor como principio de acción. Ser cristianos es vivir esa radicalidad en la apertura al otro (mi hermano) y al Otro (Dios), encontrando mi plena realización en el dar y no en el recibir. De esta manera, no es un verdadero cristiano el miembro confesional del partido, sino quien se hace realmente humano por su vivencia cristiana. Si todos viviéramos así nuestro cristianismo, estoy seguro que muchos otros hermanos aceptarían el testimonio de Cristo como testimonio para sus vidas. Entonces estaríamos promoviendo verdaderamente el mensaje UNIVERSAL que Jesucristo nos vino a traer. PROPÓSITO Reflexionemos esta semana: ¿En dónde estoy basando mi seguimiento de Cristo, en el cumplimiento de unos ritos, o en mi esfuerzo por vivir plenamente como humano, tomando a Cristo como modelo? ¿Estoy dando testimonio de mi cristianismo con mis actos o sólo con los ritos?
