Dear St. James Family, Happy New Year! On this first day of the Liturgical Year, let me greet you with St. Paul’s beautiful words: “Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ!” (1Cor. 1:3) Thus we begin the journey through the Advent Season – a sacred time that calls us all to be alert and watchful; a time that calls us to prepare, to wait and be ready to welcome the Son of God. Soon, we will hear from St. John the Baptist – the voice of one crying out in the wilderness: “Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his path” (Mk. 1:3). How do we prepare? How do we make straight His path? How do we recognize God’s presence in our lives, especially in the hectic schedule of the holidays? I propose that we reflect on these crucial questions in light of this Jubilee Year of the Eucharist that Bishop Noonan has just called to celebrate the Diocese’s 50th Anniversary. The Eucharistic Lord is the answer to the questions of how we are to prepare and be watchful. It is important to remember that the task of becoming better and holier isn’t to be accomplished on our own. We should not put too much stock in personal efforts lest we fall into the trap of pride and presumption. Rather, it is in ceaselessly imploring, “Stay with us, Lord!” (Lk. 24:29) that we are enabled to stay in union with God. The whole point of becoming holy is to be in constant union with God, isn’t it? May that be our ‘New Year’s resolution’ - To be more connected with God! However, just like any New Year’s resolution, we will forget and abandon it at some point. That reminds me of these six resolutions from the writer Erma Bombeck: 1. I’m going to clean this dump just as soon as the kids grow up. 2. I will go to no doctor whose office plants have died. 3. I’m going to follow my husband’s suggestion to put a little excitement into life by living within our budget. 4. I’m going to apply for a hardship scholarship to Weight Watchers. 5. I will never lend my car to anyone I have given birth to. 6. And just like last year, I am going to remember that my children need love the most when they deserve it the least. We will undoubtedly break our spiritual resolution, as we do with other New Year’s resolutions we make. Spiritually speaking however, know that God will always remember to love us the most, even when we deserve it the least.

5. Nunca prestaré mi automóvil a nadie a quien yo haya traído al mundo. 6.

Since June of this year, I have provided a series of little ‘catechesis’/reflections about the Eucharist. These were intended to help us understand more of the sublime gift that the Lord has left us – the gift of Himself in the form of the Bread of Life and the Blood of the Everlasting Covenant. These were also meant to pave the way for us to look toward the celebration of the Golden Jubilee Year of the Diocese of Orlando, which Bishop Noonan has proclaimed to be the Year of the Eucharist. The theme of the Jubilee is the verse taken from the Gospel of Luke, “Stay with us, Lord” (Lk. 24, 29). And, He does. The Lord Jesus accompanies us always in every step and turn of our journey for as long as we permit Him to do so. Even when we have lost sight of Him or forgotten about Him, I am certain that the Lord still quietly walks by us and watches over us as a loving and faithful friend. With the first Sunday of Advent, we begin a new Liturgical Year. I thought I should also begin a series on a different topic. It is not to say I have exhausted what needs to be said about the Eucharist. We really could spend the rest of our lives reflecting on this awesome gift and that still isn’t enough. However in my prayers, it feels like the Lord is asking me to move on. My job isn’t to exhaust any topic. It is to whet your appetite and thus inspire you to learn more. Hence, the need for a new topic. So, now what? Strangely, I thought about the journey of the Israelites in the desert for forty years until they reached the Promised Land. God was present to them in a concrete way in the form of the Ark of the Covenant. It was a visible reminder to the people that God was walking among them and with them. In this sacred ark, there were three very special objects: the staff of Aaron, a handful of Manna and the two stone tablets inscribing the Ten Commandments. Their symbolism is pretty obvious. Aaron’s staff embodied the priesthood – the office of the mediator between God and man. Manna was the bread from heaven that God used to feed His people. The tablets were the proof of the Covenant between God and the people. Bring those symbols to our present reality. Fr. Miguel’s, Fr. Chris’ and my priesthood carry on that awesome responsibility of standing before God to offer Sacrifice and intercede for our flock. I have spoken at length about the Eucharist – the Bread of Life. It seems fitting then I should spend a bit of effort on reflecting with you on the Ten Commandments – to one of the foundational components of our Christian faith. They are the basic precepts God provided to help us stay connected to Him and lead a good and righteous life. There are 10 of these commandments. Therefore, you can rest assured we stay on this topic for a good while. To be continued…
