what Roman Catholics choose to do to mark Lent as a different, special, and peniten!al !me. We are all familiar with “giving something up” and varia!ons on it like trying new prayer styles or doing service. But we may not remember that we also omit key parts of the liturgy — no more alleluias un!l Easter, nor the angels’ announcement of the Savior’s birth: “Glory to God in the highest.”

Each year during Lent, Orthodox Chris!ans and Eastern Catholics undertake the Great Fast: they abstain from all meat and fish, all dairy products, eggs, alcohol, and some!mes oil. By adop!ng this special diet, they remind themselves of their unique rela!onship with God through Jesus Christ, who comes to us anew on Easter Sunday. Two years ago, I par!cipated in the Great Fast with an Orthodox friend of mine. It was a blessed and beau!ful Lent, but also a difficult one. Since I have limited culinary imagina!on and skill, Easter was very welcome that spring. This experience, however, has made me much more a$en!ve to

Some!mes I wonder if these prac!ces are enough to remind us that we’re in a season of recollec!on and repentance. Are skipping some words at mass and cu&ng midnight snacks sufficient to remind us that, without Jesus, we have no hope? Or that original sin con!nues to weigh us down in ways we don’t recognize? While what we do for Lent is important, how we do it is equally and perhaps more important. That’s the heart of Jesus’ instruc!ons to us in Ash Wednesday’s Gospel: do righteous deeds and give alms quietly, pray secretly, and fast cheerfully.

certainly, Jesus is asking us not only to give glory to God in our ac!ons, but also to a$une our hearts to God’s constant joy in all we do. How could a child of God be dour or selfish about doing God’s will? As Jesus reminds us, taking our Lenten observances seriously — like Eastern fas!ng — precludes being public and drama!c. Such modesty in our Roman Catholic observances may be par!cularly appropriate for us here in Ann Arbor, amidst the pressure to perform for others as “leaders and the best.” Maybe our best Lenten observance would be to content ourselves with simply following Jesus, who gives us a task that is easy and a burden that is light (Ma$hew 11:30), especially when we’re inclined to place demands on ourselves. So how and what is Jesus asking of us — here and now? He is asking us not to !re of living the Gospel, but to lead joyful lives in service of a God who only desires our greater fulfillment and our unselfish service to his people.

When I read Jesus’ instruc!ons, I can’t help but remember that St. Paul reminds the nascent Chris!an community in Philippi to “Rejoice in the Lord always. I say it again: rejoice!” (Philippians 4:4). Is Paul commanding us to be joyful? Most
