The Real Presence of Christ on our Parish Feast Day by Jake Derry, Campus Ministry Associate Jesus Christ is our king. This is what we celebrate on November 26th: the Feast of Christ the King. Therefore, we cannot see ourselves as just “followers” of Christ, like we might “follow” friends or pop culture celebs on Instagram. We are servants to Jesus, and servants not out of obliga"on, but out of love. Knowing Jesus changes how we live, doesn’t it? How do we serve Jesus then? In Ma#hew 25, Jesus tells his disciples (us) how we are supposed to serve: “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me” He gives further clarifica"on when He adds, “Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of the least brothers of mine, you did for me.” This means that we must choose to see the holiness of Jesus in everyone around us, par"cularly “the least” -- the poor, the refugee, the sick and hungry, the oppressed and outcasts. We must choose to be servants to each other, recognizing that being a servant usually doesn’t mean doing something; most o!en it really just means listening and being mutually with someone in their suffering. I agree with Susan Slavin and Coralis Salvador when they said, “the poor reflect the presence of Christ in a real way. The ins"tu"onal church prefers a sacramental Christ because it’s less demanding. We spend an hour in church on Sunday and that’s it. It’s much more difficult to spend an hour under the roof of someone who is really poor. That

person is more real. That poor person is the real presence of Christ.” I want to share with you a wonderful first step for us to begin living out the fullness of this call to “be with.” On Saturday, December 9th, we invite you to the Feast Day of Service (celebra"ng the Feast of the Immaculate Concep"on) here at St. Mary. On this day, we will gather for mass, lunch, and then go out into our community to lend a hand, our ears, and our hearts to non-profit organiza"ons and those in need. Please join us for this day. Then, hopefully, we will choose to develop what Fr. Greg Boyle describes as, “a compassion that can stand in awe at what the poor have to carry rather than stand in judgment at how they carry it.” If you can’t make this par"cular day in December, don’t worry. We’ll have more opportuni"es to be servants of Jesus with our day"me warming center in January, joining our parish “Big Read” between now and February, and of course, you could just start today, wherever you are. Finally, I’d like to note that while service is important, it is just the first step. Our faith is not described as a “faith that does service every once in awhile” but a “faith that does jus"ce [always].” If we truly, in all our heart, believe that “the least” are the real presence of Christ, then we must go a step further by ac"vely working against the systems and ins"tu"ons that oppress subsets of our human family. This includes, but is not limited to: people of color, people who are immigrants and refugees, people who are LGBTQ, and others. With this in mind, I encourage you to take "me now to reflect on how you already have been serving Jesus, our king, through faith, service, and jus"ce, and how you’d like to be#er serve Him going forward. Igna!an Family Teach-In by Maggie Larin, Hispanic-La"no/Faith and Jus"ce Ministry Intern visited 5 Senate offices and 23 more in the House of Representa"ves to deliver over 500 le#ers!

L-R back row: Amy Ketner (Hispanic/La!no Ministry Assoc.), Jake Derry (Campus Ministry Assoc.), Maddie Jones (Faith Doing Jus!ce lead team), & Tanner Jones (H/L lead team) L-R front row: Lisa Garcia (H/L lead team), Maggie Larin (H/L and Faith Doing Jus!ce intern), & Abby Sommers (former intern, H/L lead team)

This was my third "me a#ending the Teach-In, and it was my favorite I’ve been to. One of the things loved so much about this year’s conference was that, in the words of Fr. Massingale, we were able to “have an open, honest, adult conversa"on about race.” Normally, the keynote addresses are spread across the spectrum of jus"ce issues, and race has never been at the forefront, but this year two of the three central talks of the weekend, one by a priest and another by a woman religious, focused on racial jus"ce. We are at a point in our country and frankly, in our Church, where we cannot deny that racism is s"ll a persistent and pervasive ins"tu"onal sin. We as Catholics have a Biblical obliga"on to the marginalized and to humble ourselves to exalt others. As such, we are called to fight oppression and racism. It was refreshing to hear that coming so clearly from such significant members of the Church.

Earlier this month, I joined a group of 7 other St. Mary students, staff, and parishioners at the Igna"an Family Teach-In for Jus"ce in Washington D.C. The Teach-In was first ins"tuted in memory of the 6 Jesuit martyrs of El Salvador and their companions Elba and Celina Ramos, who were killed at the UCA (the Jesuit University in San Salvador) in 1989 near the end of the Civil War. Now, it is the largest Catholic social jus"ce conference in the United States. This year, more than 2000 students, staff, and parishioners from Jesuit high schools, universi"es, and parishes gathered in Washington, D.C. to hear from dis"nguished speakers, including racial jus"ce scholar Fr. Bryan Massingale, execu"ve director of Pax Chris", and author Fr. James Mar"n, S.J. We also had the opportunity to a#end breakout sessions, and our own director of Hispanic Ministry Amy Ketner and parishioner Pamela Quintana Salazar were on a panel about Immigra"on—and you can find a video of it on our Facebook page: h!ps:// www.facebook.com/SMSP.UM/videos/10155721186180275/ A!er the conference we went to Capitol Hill to meet with members of Congress about Immigra"on—specifically to encourage them to co-sponsor or sign a clean Dream Act— and criminal jus"ce reform. We had a jam-packed day thanks to the enthusias"c support of our parish! We had the opportunity to sit down with staffers from Senator Gary Peters’s and Representa"ve Jus"n Amash’s offices. We also

L-R back row: Lisa Garcia, Amy Ketner, Maggie Larin, Pamela Quintana Salazar (parishioner, daughter of Lourdes), Maddie Jones & Tanner Jones. L-R front row: Abby Sommers & Jake Derry

Not only was the content of the talks much deeper and more challenging than I expected it would be, but I also had the great blessing of a phenomenal group of people a#ending the conference with me. Most of my learning and selfreflec"on came from the insights and experiences of my group that they shared throughout the weekend. I am so grateful for all of them and for the support of the parish that gave us the opportunity to put our faith into ac"on in this way.

Those who use their gi!s and talents in the service of one another, especially the poor and needy, are blessed indeed. They shall be known as children of the light, and will be ready for the Lord’s return.

PLEASE THANK OUR SPONSORS!

25:31-46

The Lord is our shepherd. At the end, at his coming, he will hand over the kingdom to his Father. He will “judge between one sheep and another, between rams and goats”, between those who have lived lives for other and those who have lived for themselves.

THIS BULLETIN IS FURNISHED TO THE PARISH WITHOUT CHARGE. The adver"sements that appear completely defray all publishing costs with which the church would otherwise be burdened. Please patronize these sponsors as a thank you for their kind generosity.
