PENSAMIENTOS DE NUESTRO PARROCO

Dear Parishioners,

Queridos feligreses,

This Sunday, the Fourth Sunday of Easter is often called Good Shepherd Sunday. This is because each year on this Sunday, the Gospel Reading is about Jesus as the Good Shepherd and sheep. And it is important here to remember that Jesus is the Good Shepherd who did lay down his life for his sheep, Jesus laid down his life for us. This image of Jesus as the Good Shepherd helps us to reflect on the characteristics of good leadership.

A Good Shepherd we’re certainly told today is at minimum PRESENT and does not run away. But a Good Shepherd also INSPIRES CONFIDENCE, the sheep trust him. Certainly soldiers / veterans will know this the best. It’s hard to imagine anything worse than going into battle led by someone who one fundamentally doubts knows what he (and at times today she) is doing. And of course a Good Shepherd is CAPABLE OF SELF -SACRIFICE, he/she does not ask others to do which he/ she fundamentally won’t do him/herself.

In this regard, I’ve long been impressed with the British Royal Family. During the Falkland Islands War, Prince Andrew, Prince Charles’ brother served as a Harrier jet pilot and more recently Prince Harry served twice (as a helicopter pilot no less) in Afghanistan. This level of service often gets lost in the States, though former Chicago Mayor Daley’s son served in Afghanistan as did former V.P.

That said, one can be “brave” but also stupid. So one has to be humble and, honestly, always seek wisdom. Again, thankfully Jesus is the Good Shepherd, the rest of us are necessarily students / wannabes. Still let us always seek to be the best that we can be and take our responsibilities to each other / God seriously. Let us seek to be people that others can count on. Happy Good Shepherd Sunday! -- Fr. Dennis

- P. Dennis

St. Philip St. Benizi, Philip Benizi, O.S.M O.S.M Catholic Catholic Community Community TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Most languages take the name for this fifty-day season from the Lord’s Passover: Pasqua in Italian, Pâques in French, Paach in Dutch, Pascha in Greek and Russian. English has a much newer name, the name of a pagan goddess, Eoster. For centuries before Christianity took hold, in both Germany and Britain the spring equinox was dedicated to her and the concepts of fertility and rebirth. She was said to be a playful spirit, following the Sun King’s chariot, and ending the reign of winter. She had a magical companion, a rabbit who hid eggs in the fields to coax plants and animals to rebirth. It was believed that Eoster once came across a bird with broken wings and saved it by turning it into a rabbit—an egg-laying rabbit at that! Although they were baptized, most people didn’t take to the new Latin name (Pascha Domini) too easily, and kept calling the spring equinox by the old accustomed name. For good measure, they kept a pagan name for Christmas, too: Yule. — Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

The Little Ones

Fourth Sunday of Easter

Living God’s Word First Reading — There is no other name under heaven by which we are to be saved than the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene. (Acts 4:8-12). Psalm — The stone rejected by the builders has become the cornerstone. — (Psalm 118). Gospel — I am the good shepherd. A good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. — (John 10:11-18). SILENCE Silence is a gift of God, to let us speak more intimately with God. — St. Vincent Pallotti

AT WORK Christianity is the spirit of Jesus Christ at work in the world. — Anonymous

SAVED BY THE ONE WHO WAS REJECTED

Some city teenagers often scorn and reject farm kids. Yet it’s no exaggeration to say that humanity owes its life to farmers who care for the world’s crops and livestock. This week’s scriptures remind us that Jesus was as rejected as a shepherd, a farm boy, yet we owe our very lives to him. In this Sunday’s reading from the Acts of the Apostles Peter tells the people that salvation comes through Jesus Christ, the one who was rejected. In John’s letter we hear that we have become God’s beloved children through Jesus, whom the world did not know. Lastly, in the Gospel Jesus describes himself as the Good Shepherd who “lays down his life for the sheep” (John 10:11). Will you join Jesus in laying down your life for God’s beloved flock?

Copyright © J. S. TOWN HALL MEETING - HOMELESSNESS

REUNION PARROQUIAL—HACIA LOS SIN HOGAR

APRIL 30, 2018, 7 PM IN THE CHURCH

30 DE ABRIL DE 2018, 7 PM EN LA IGLESIA

As you may be aware from the news and driving on the freeway near Angel Stadium, there is a serious need for affordable housing in Orange County. The consequence in some part is the increase of those who do not have a home to sleep in at night. They are taking shelter wherever they can find it. Recently, the County of Orange evicted hundreds of people who were encamped at the riverbed. At the same time, the County turned to non-profits to aid in finding these people housing. The Diocese has been involved in this process as well and one of the organizations it has sought to work with is the Illumination Foundation.

You may, or may not know, we have been working to find a way to help those of our brothers and sisters who find themselves without homes who are sleeping on our parish grounds at night. On recommendation from the Diocese we have been working with said Illumination Foundation for nearly a year to work out a process to help find housing and at the same time provide counseling and answer other basic needs. Our hope is to begin in the latter part of June (after all our sacramental programs are completed for the year and our Parish Fiesta a happy memory and we have time to really think / evaluate) a trial program with the Illumination Foundation on our property that the Diocese itself will be watching with great interest. The program will be focused on our brothers and sisters presently living in cars and moving them into permanent housing. The program will only be at night in an isolated corner of our parking lot (Gilbert and Valencia) away from our Faith Formation buildings. The Illumination Foundation will also offer onsite security. Our town hall meeting will be to address any questions that may arise concerning this trial program. Illumination Foundation is a well run, extremely effective organization. They will manage everything from counseling to on site security. And again the Diocese itself will be watching this program intently. If you have concerns or are just curious on how you can help, please come to the town hall meeting. Fr. Dennis Kriz, OSM Pastor

THANK YOU THANK YOU to everyone who supported the Women’s Council Spring Tea! We are truly grateful to the 27 creative ladies who decorated the beautiful tables, the gracious gentlemen who served, our lovely models, the Friday and Saturday helpers, our generous underwriters and donors and over 200 guests!!! Your continued support has been a blessing to our parish! Thanks again and may God Bless you all!! Love, Joyce Miller & Mary Ann Ringkamp Tea Co-Chairs

P. Dennis Kriz, OSM

SOLIDARITY FUND FOR THE CHURCH IN AFRICA Next week, our parish will take up a collection for the Solidarity Fund for the Church in Africa. While the Church in Africa is growing, many still lack access to basic resources and pastoral care and are challenged by high rates of poverty and unemployment, illiteracy, and poor education. The Solidarity Fund supports pastoral projects that strengthen their faith and foster lasting peace and reconciliation in a continent often marked by division and tension. To learn more visit www.usccb.org/africa.
