King and Judge
Rey y Juez
In life, Jesus refused the tle of King; today’s Gospel portrays Christ as our judge. In the last line from our reading of the Prophet Ezequiel, God says to his people “I will judge..”. Our Gospel reading presents the risen Christ as our judge on the day of judgment, the end of me. What is interes ng to note is that in both readings the judge is depicted as a shepherd; the focus is not primarily on condemna on, but rather care for the sheep. We are urged to live in such a manner as that we would be recognized as faithful sheep, ready to enter into the glory of God’s kingdom. What are the criteria for judgment? = there is a strong focus on charity and jus ce. How have we responded to those without enough food, those who have no access to clean water, immigrants who are strangers in our midst, those who are in need of clothing and shelter, the sick, the homebound, those in our jails and prisons ..all of these will be criteria for our judgment. And, we need to remember that it’s not just a ma er of charity, it is also a ma er of jus ce …unjust laws, distribu on of resources, our care for the climate, unjust wages, the need for programs for addic ons …. We need to pray and work for jus ce and charity. We don’t want to think only about our own agenda, to not be blind to the needs of others. That would be a goat, and in today’s Gospel it’s bad news for the goats!
En vida, Jesús no quiso el tulo de Rey; hoy el Evangelio lo presenta como nuestro juez. Al final de la lectura del profeta Ezequiel, Dios dice a su pueblo “Voy a juzgar …”. El Evangelio presenta al Cristo resucitado como juez en el día de juicio final, es decir al final de los empos. Lo interesante en ambas lecturas es que el juez es presentado como pastor; que el enfoque no es tanto lo de condenar, sino más bien en cómo hemos cuidado de las ovejas. Somos llamados a vivir de tal manera que seamos reconocidos como ovejas fieles, listos para entrar en la gloria del reino de Dios. ¿Cuáles son los criterios del juicio? = hay un fuerte enfoque en la caridad y la jus cia. ¿Cómo hemos respondido a los que no enen suficiente comida?..los que no enen acceso al agua limpia?..a inmigrantes entre nosotros?..a los que faltan ropa y donde vivir?..a los enfermos, encarcelados?..los ancianos?...todo esto será el criterio por lo cual seremos juzgados. Y, tenemos que recordar que no es solo trata de caridad, sino también trata de jus cia …leyes injustas, distribución de recursos, atención al clima, salarios injustos, la necesidad de programas para adictos; rezar por la jus ca y caridad. Que no solo pensamos en lo de nuestro propio agenda, a no ser ciego a las necesidades de otros. Eso sería como un chivo, y el Evangelio ene mala no cias para los chivos!

Most of us are generous when it’s convenient for us. We are generous when we have the time or the money. But, generosity is the opposite of that. It means giving of one’s time, money, compassion, forgiveness or mercy when it’s not convenient; when it’s not on our schedule, but on the other person’s schedule.
