Celebrating 93 Years of Community Service

Growth is never by mere chance; it is the result of forces working together. James Cash Penney To my fellow stars: Each year in our 93-year legacy, we have faced hunger, academic barriers, broken homes & souls fearlessly. Given the current state of our economy, we are still in for a battle. I am pleased to say that despite the challenges, we are not weakened in spirit, but humbled by the support of our contributors. Coretta Scott King said it best “When you are willing to make sacrifices for a great cause, you will never be alone.” You, our treasured friends, continue to see the good that we do and join in with us to move families toward self-sufficiency. I am proud to say, we are shining brighter than ever before. While our pantry numbers remain high, we can state that our families have healthy choices. While we are waging war against infant mortality rates, our new moms are making strides in parenting. While our proficiency scores and graduation rates trend upward, we are proud that our students are receiving individualized support to S.T.E.M. the tide and reduce non-academic barriers. You are helping us level the playing field for our youth on their journey to academic excellence! Finally, while our senior citizens age gracefully, your support allows us to continue to serve them with dignity, preserving their legacy through intergenerational programs. In partnership with you, as a stakeholder in our work, we understand that we are never alone in our service to those in need. Together we will continue our mission of Brightening Lives In Columbus and remain a beacon of hope for all who enter through our doors.

In the spirit of service,

Michelle M. Mills President/CEO

Family Services

Family Services

Charity may be a very short word, but with its tremendous meaning of pure love, it sums up man’s entire relation to God and to his neighbor. - St. Aelred of Rievaulx

The Family to Family Initiative is a partnership with Franklin County Department of Children Services, in which St. Stephen’s Community House is the lead agency and provides support services to families, focusing on keeping families together as well as building strong healthy families. Community Advocacy and Parent Engagement

Community Advocacy & Parent Engagement

A man is called selfish not for pursuing his own good, but for neglecting his neighbor’s. - Richard Whately

The Community Advocacy and Parent Engagement program is a multifaceted program with a broad purpose of raising awareness among parents of the valuable material resources available to them through St. Stephens; developing partnerships between parents and staff; and increasing parents involvement in the lives of their children at school and at home. Additional focus and attention are placed on important issues such as: h Family Support and Education is designed to strengthen parents and students in the school setting. Community Advocate communicates with parents about their child’s academic, non-academic and emotional needs. h C hild Development offers an opportunity for staff to observe child development, provide screenings to identify concerns. This initiative is not designed to diagnose, but rather an opportunity to gather and provide information to parents that might prove helpful to pediatricians and other specialists who might administer further evaluation of the child’s progress. h Education provided for students and adults on the dangers of Prescription Drug abuse in the form of presentations and knowledge quizzes paramount to decreasing the abuse and increasing awareness. In 2011, St. Stephen’s was able to demonstrate increased awareness of prescription drug abuse in over 165 individuals.

Celebrating 93 Years of Community Service

h Community Canvass Day (survey) A hallmark of our success in serving our community is our community canvas day when the staff of St. Stephen’s Community House goes door-to-door throughout the Greater Linden area to find out how their doing in delivering services to the community. This survey provides detailed information about what our neighbors know about programs and services at St. Stephen’s and offers an opportunity for residents to provide information on what new programs and services they want to see, thereby helping us to address the needs of the community more effectively. In 2011, St. Stephen’s staff collected approximately 500 surveys, going doorto- door obtaining information from community residents that directly influences agency programs and strategic direction.

Together, with our partners, we develop socially through…..

Volunteers

Volunteers Volunteerism is a means to share our gifts with others. It is not done for fame or monetary gain, but is done because of an awareness of the needs of others and a passion to do something about it

- Unknown

St. Stephen’s Community House sustains its services to the community with the assistance of volunteers. Our volunteers are people who want to give back to our community by sharing their passion, time, expertise, and resources while contributing to the good of the community. They assisted with backpack distributions, Community Care Days, Bravo! For the Children, and the Gingerbread Fantasy & Fashion Show. In December, more than 900 volunteers of all ages assisted with the Christmas Care/One New Toy program, by doing the extraordinary and making a difference in the lives of more than 3400 families. We are thankful for the labor of love from our volunteers. They leave a lasting imprint on the families we serve and with the staff at St. Stephen’s Community House. We have received volunteer assistance from numerous community partners including; Abbott Nutrition, AkzoNobel, Capital University, AEP, Cardinal Health, The Catholic Diocese (Bishop Hartley, Bishop Watterson and DeSales High Schools), Christ Child Society, Columbus Blue Jackets, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Fortner Upholstering, The Graham School, Hamilton STEM Academy, Hilliard High School, IBM/Sterling, Linden McKinley High School, Molina Health Care, Nationwide, Ohio Health, OSU, Otterbein, State Auto, and the Trojan’s. This list of partners represents just a few of the many individual volunteers and/or volunteer organizations that support our mission. During 2011, our 1576 volunteers immeasurably enhanced the many resources of SSCH by collectively contributing 7190.71 hours of volunteer time; time that is equivalent to a savings of $149,926.30.

We have a 93-year legacy because of committed partners, donors & sound financial practices!

Financials

Financials

In all realms of life it takes courage to stretch your limits, express your power, and fulfill your potential...it’s no different in the financial realm. – Suze Orman How We Spend Our Money In knowing the needs of our community, we are able to focus our resources on the programs that best serve our community, addressing the highest needs. In doing so, we are able to maximize our resources and avoid waste. St. Stephen’s Community House expects all employees to make sound purchasing decisions that ensure the continued efficient operation of the agency. Vendor partnerships help us get the most from every procurement dollar. These partnerships are negotiated using the full benefit of the agency’s buying power and include an analysis of the vendor’s corporate philanthropy footprint related to community activities. Often these vendor partnerships lead to corporate sponsorship. We have found that our corporate sponsors and vendor partners are honored to be part of the St. Stephen’s team. They catch that spirit of community involvement that runs rampant at St. Stephen’s and continue their involvement through donations of gifts for fundraisers, of services and of staff time through volunteering. We are honored in turn to have among our corporate friends and partners recent recipients of the Columbus Business First Annual Corporate Care awards, among include Grange Insurance, Abbott Labs, and Continental Office Environments. This award recognizes outstanding corporate contributions to the Columbus community.
