During the past two decadesbanders have taken their work more seriouslyand have begunrecording more and more informationregardingthe birds they are banding. To facilitate orderly recordkeeping, bird observatories(especiallyManomet and Point Reyes)have developedstandardrecording forms that are now available to banders. These forms are convenientfor recordingbanding data manually, and they are designed to facilitate automateddata processing.
Because errors in species codes are frequently detectedduring editing of bandingschedules, the Bird BandingOfficesfeel that bandersshoulduse speciesnamesor abbreviationsthereofratherthan only the AOU or speciescode numbers on their field sheets. Thus, it is essentialthat any recording form have provision for either common names, Latin names, or a suitable abbreviation. Most
recordingforms presentlyin use have a 4-digit field for abbreviated common names; however,
The system we proposefollows five simple rules for abbreviating:
1. If the commonname is a singleword, use the first four letters,e.g.,Canvasback,CANV. 2. If the commonname consistsof two words, use
the firsttwo lettersof the firstword, followedby the first two letters of the last word, e.g., Common Loon, COLO. 3. If the common name consists of three words
(with or without hyphens),use the first letter of the first word, the first letter of the secondword,
and the first two lettersof the third word, e.g., Pied-billed Grebe, PBGR. 4. If the common name consists of four words
(with or without hypens), use the first letter of each word, •.g., Great Black-backed Gull, GBBG.
bandingschedules.
5. If the commonname consistsof five words, treat it as four words, e.g., Puget Sound WhitecrownedSparrow,PSW$.
The purposeof thispaper is to make availablea system for common name abbreviations. The systemis presentlybeingusedby us and others,

every speciesis given a 4-letter abbreviation (CANV for Canvasback, CARDfor Cardinal). In the $tamm list, the family name precedes the speciesname, but in the proposedsystemthe name is written in the sequencein which it is given
