PBS Hawai‘i – Home is Here. PBS Hawai‘i volunteers from the Hawai‘i Eta Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, an international honorary organization for female educators, posed for a photo with PBS Hawai‘i President and CEO, Leslie Wilcox (second row, far right). The women of ADK were just some of the volunteers from across the Islands who were recognized at the annual National Philanthropy Day awards luncheon in Waikīkī last month, hosted by the Aloha Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. Educator Lakecia King (center) was among the community members who attended a free screening and audience discussion for the Independent Lens film, Chasing Trane: The John Coltrane Documentary. The film kicked off a new season of Indie Lens Pop-Up, a free, nationwide community film screening series presented locally by PBS Hawai‘i and Hawai‘i Women in Filmmaking.

PBS Hawai‘i Keiki Club members and their families attended our annual costume party at our home on Sand Island Access Road in Honolulu. The children were treated to arts and crafts activities, a science-based magic show, and a meet-and-greet with Curious George. pbshawaii.org 2

PBS Hawai‘i Presents Proof of Loyalty: Kazuo Yamane and the Nisei Soldiers of Hawai‘i Pictured: Kazuo Yamane, 100th Infantry Battalion

The attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 launched the United States into World War II. PBS Hawai‘i commemorates the 76th anniversary of Pearl Harbor with stories from those whose lives were shaped by that fateful day. The programming lineup culminates on December 7, when PBS Hawai‘i spotlights stories of Japanese Americans from the Islands who fought for the U.S. during World War II, and the legacy they left for future generations.

Stories from Pearl Harbor and World War II December 5-7 Tuesday, December 5 LONG STORY SHORT WITH LESLIE WILCOX Daniel Martinez 7:30 pm As Chief Historian at the World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument, Daniel Martinez has heard stories from the survivors of the attack on Pearl Harbor and shares those stories with visitors. In this conversation, hear how his connection with that infamous event goes deeper than his role as a historian. Originally aired December 2014

PBS HAWAI‘I PRESENTS Remember Pearl Harbor 8:00 pm Narrated by actor Tom Selleck, the film features first-person accounts from more than 35 veterans, and from Hawai‘i residents who witnessed the Pearl Harbor attack. Mitsuo Fuchida, the chief commander of Japan’s attack, is also interviewed. Using archival footage, photos and graphics, the documentary details the attacks on Pearl Harbor, Hickam Field and other parts of O‘ahu. Harbor, was only 11 years old on December 7, 1941. He shares memories of making eye contact with a Japan bomber pilot who flew over the farm, and of watching ships burn in Pearl Harbor. Jimmy Lee tells what it was like to live under martial law, and describes his decades-long search for a best friend whose family vanished from his neighborhood after the attack. of 94 on September 27, 2016. This documentary follows Haerry’s family as they travel from New Jersey to O‘ahu to place his ashes aboard the sunken battleship. NHK SPECIAL Lt. Onoda’s Return: The Untold Story of a Japanese War Straggler 9:00 pm In December 1944, intelligence officer Hiroo Onoda of the Japanese Imperial Army was deployed to Lubang Island in the Philippines, where he was given orders to disrupt and sabotage enemy efforts. Though the Japanese surrendered on August 15, 1945, Onoda and three others vowed to continue this mission. After 30 years of living as a war straggler, Onoda surrendered to his ex-commander and received a hero’s welcome upon returning to his homeland. However, Japan and the Philippines saw Onoda’s return as a sensitive political and diplomatic matter that required careful orchestration.

NHK SPECIAL Road to Redemption 10:00 pm Mitsuo Fuchida was the chief commander behind Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor. Jacob DeShazer was a U.S. Army Air Force corporal who dropped incendiary bombs on Nagoya in a revenge raid. After World War II, both men became devout Christians and embarked on missions in each other’s homeland, where they worked to spread a message of forgiveness. Originally aired December 2016

Thursday, December 7 INSIGHTS ON PBS HAWAI‘I A Tribute to One-Puka-Puka 8:00 pm – LIVE The legacy of the 100th Infantry Battalion, nicknamed “One-PukaPuka,” continues to this day. The battalion, formed during World War II, was initially made up largely of Nisei (second-generation) Japanese Americans from Hawai‘i. After WWII, the battalion was mobilized during

NHK Special: Road to Redemption Japan chief commander Mitsuo Fuchida and U.S. Army Air Force corporal Jacob DeShazer the Korean, Vietnam and Iraq wars. Today, the Hawai‘i-based battalion is the only infantry unit in the U.S. Army Reserve, with additional units on American Samoa, Guam and Saipan. Historians, veterans and several past and present service members of the 100th Infantry Battalion join us on Insights for this live conversation, which will also be streamed on pbshawaii.org and PBS Hawai‘i’s Facebook page. PBS HAWAI‘I PRESENTS Proof of Loyalty: Kazuo Yamane and the Nisei Soldiers of Hawai‘i 9:00 pm Kazuo Yamane, a Nisei Japanese American from Hawai‘i, played a crucial strategic role in WWII. Drafted just before the war, Yamane became a part of the 100th Infantry Battalion. He was plucked from their ranks for his exceptional knowledge of the Japanese language, which would lead him to the Pentagon and to Europe, where he served under President Eisenhower. Yamane would eventually use his language skills to help shorten the war in the Pacific.

PARTNER PROFILE

McCabe, Hamilton & Renny Co., Ltd.

Tim Guard President and CEO McCabe, Hamilton & Renny Co., Ltd.

Tim Guard is a Vietnam veteran whose stevedore company, McCabe, Hamilton & Renny Co., Ltd., sponsored PBS Hawai‘i’s local broadcasts of The Vietnam War, the 10-part documentary from filmmakers Ken Burns and Lynn Novick. Patty Doo, Director of Business Support at PBS Hawai‘i, sat down with Tim to discuss the documentary and his reasons for supporting the epic program.

PBS Hawai‘i: What compelled you to sponsor The Vietnam War? Tim Guard: I thought it was absolutely a unique project because of the magnitude and scope of this documentary. The fact that [filmmaker] Ken Burns has a superb reputation and knowing his body of work, I knew it would be outstanding. Clearly, the message from my perspective needed to be told. If there was any documentary that was really going to be expressive of not just the war but the causes that led to it, and the people who played significant roles in it, I felt it was hardly a gamble; it had to be done. The Vietnam War featured many stories from the American, North and South Vietnamese sides of the conflict. What did you think about this approach? I think by folding in the multiplicity of opinions it helped shape the documentary in an objective, non-biased sort of way. The Vietnam War was not just about battlefield footage, but a great deal of incredible research about the key players [as well], whether they were French, Americans, North or South Vietnamese. In particular, the interviews with the North Vietnamese were

pbshawaii.org 16

remarkable to me because of how candid they were. It was not an opportunity for anyone to speak politically or come to this project with a propaganda point of view. I thought it was incredibly objective. Was there any one story that stood out to you? The fall of Saigon was particularly poignant for me because I knew people who were there and who got out literally on one of the last trains leaving town, so to speak. I knew civilians who worked for the Americans, civilians in our little naval station, near Vũng Tàu. I have no idea what happened to them. I felt because of their connection with the U.S., either by working on the base or the little village next to the base, there would be consequences. I felt a sense of abandonment when we finally departed, and the last gun ship had left town. There were so many left to a very, very uncertain but frightening future. That bothered me greatly and I felt we left an ally in the lurch. Why is supporting PBS Hawai‘i important to you? Nobody else is doing the kind of work PBS Hawai‘i is doing. You are doing the best. We get away from the network news, for example, which is fine. I feel PBS Hawai‘i gives us the most objective take on current events. Mahalo a nui loa to McCabe, Hamilton & Renny Co., Ltd. for its support of PBS Hawai‘i. If you or someone you know would like to be a program sponsor, please contact PBS Hawai‘i’s Director of Business Support, Patty Doo, at [email protected] or call 808.462.5048.
