Study Culture, Literature, and History in Japan Tokyo, Kyoto, and Hiroshima July 5-19, 2016 Courses (No Prerequisites Necessary): ENGL 2300 “Ethics & Literature: Hiroshima & Nagasaki” ENGL 4334/5334 “Japanese Literature and Culture in Context” HIST 4334 “Japanese Culture: Historical and Transhistorical Forces” (This course will count toward the English major) Program Fee: $2,200 USD (based on 10 participants) Includes accommodations, breakfasts, ground transportation, all entry fees and excursions, international health insurance. Airfare, tuition and some meals not included. Flights will be reserved in coordination with faculty leaders. Interested in applying for the Japan program? First, fill out the LU study abroad form and health information form posted online at lamar.edu/studyabroad (click the Forms tab on the left). Second, pay a deposit of $600 due to the LU Cashier’s Office by February 1, 2016. Payment Deadlines: February 1, 2016: $600 (deposit) March 15, 2016: $800 (second installment) April 15, 2016: $800 (final installment) Payable to the Cashier’s Office at Lamar University by debit card, personal check, cashier’s check, money order, cash, and/or wire transfer. Unfortunately, all program payments are non-refundable. LU tuition and fees for 3-6 course credits are separate from the Japan trip expenses and are due to LU. Short Classes on Language and Culture One week in Hiroshima allows you to ease into the country. Yasuda Women’s University will provide classes in calligraphy, cooking, tea ceremony, flower arrangement, and kimono/yukata wearing, along with classes in Japanese language and Hiroshima & Nagasaki in film & literature.  Homestays and Student Hosts In Hiroshima, you will stay with a host family and experience Japanese life first-hand. You will also interact with university students and have school visits.  UNESCO World Heritage Sites You will visit the famous Miyajima Island, home of the floating Torii gate, and Himeji Castle, the largest and most visited castle in Japan, whose nickname is Shirasagi-jo (“White Egret Castle”).  Zen Temples, Shinto Shrines, and Gardens We will visit scenic spots, which are also of historical significance. They are unique and interesting, reflecting Japanese aesthetics. Meditative moments will recharge your soul. Geisha, Samurai, Ninja, and the Largest Festival in Japan In historic Kyoto, we will enjoy geisha, samurai, and ninja performances and attend Gion Matsuri, the most famous festival in Japan. In Tokyo, we will watch a traditional Kabuki performance with English headsets. Cool Japan (Manga, Anime, Sumo, Hot Springs, Shopping, etc.) We will finish our trip in Tokyo, where you can spend a free afternoon. Options include the Ghibli Museum, the Kokugikan Sumo Stadium, a natural onsen (hot spring) theme park, and Nakano Broadway. In Tokyo, we will enjoy a taste of contemporary Japanese culture, including Akibahara, an otaku cultural center. Japanese Cuisine Develop your taste for Japanese food. Once you are hooked on Japanese snacks and meals, your trip will be unforgettable!
