Direct and Indirect Speech • นักเรี ยนสามารถรายงานสิ่ งที่บุคคลอื่นพูดได้ 2 ลักษณะ คือ

• 1) นาคาพูดของบุคคลนั้นมาเล่า หรื อรายงานโดยตรง ไม่มีการเปลี่ยนแปลง และจะ ใส่ ไว้ในเครื่ องหมายคาพูด หรื อเรี ยกว่า quotation marks (“…”) ลักษณะนี้เรี ยกว่า direct speech

ในการเปลี่ยนประโยค direct speech เป็ นประโยค indirect speech นักเรี ยนต้องเปลี่ยนแปลงสิ่ งที่สาคัญ ดังนี้

• 1. เปลี่ยนแปลงคาสรรพนาม (pronouns) • 2. เปลี่ยนแปลงรู ปกริ ยา หรื อ tense

ในประโยค indirect speech นักเรี ยนต้องเปลี่ยนคาสรรพนามให้ สอดคล้องกับผูพ้ ูด ผูฟ้ ัง และผูท้ ี่ถูกกล่าวถึง นอกจากนี้ยงั รวมถึงการเปลี่ยนแปลงคา แสดงความเป็ นเจ้าของ (possessive form) ให้เหมาะสมด้วย เช่น

• Indirect:

Sue says that her dad likes roast chicken.

• Indirect: Frank said (that) they were the best students. • (ในที่น้ ี Frank พูด แต่พูดในฐานะเป็ นตัวแทนของกลุ่มนักเรี ยนหลายคน จาก we จะเปลี่ยนเป็ น they ซึ่ งหมายถึง Frank และ เพื่อนนักเรี ยนคนอื่นๆด้วย)

• Indirect: Frank said (that) he liked my jeans. • (ในที่นี่ I หมายถึง Frank คนเดียว และ your หมายถึง ของผู้ฟัง ซึ่ งเป็ นคน รายงาน • ประโยคนี้ ดังนั้น I จึงเปลี่ยนเป็ น he แทน Frank และ your เปลี่ยนเป็ น my)

• Reporting Verbs • Said, told and asked are the most common verbs used in indirect speech. • 1. We use asked to report questions:-

• For example: I asked Lynne what time the lesson started.

• For example: Lynne told me she felt tired. • (!Note - Here me is the object.)

Direct and Indirect Speech • 3. We usually use said without an object.

• For example: Lynne said she was going to teach online. • If said is used with an object we must include to;

Direct and Indirect Speech • 4. There are many other verbs we can use apart from said, told and asked. • These include:-

• Ben invited (เชิญ) me to the party. • Ben begged (ขอ/วิงวอน) me to come to the party. • Ben ordered (สัง่ ) me to come to the party.

• Ben suggested (เสนอแนะ) I should come to the party.

In reported speech, the word that is often used.

• For example: He told me that he lived in Las Vegas. • However, that is optional. (จะมีหรื อละ that ก็ได้) • For example: He told me he lived in Greenwich.

Direct and Indirect Speech • หมายเหตุ: That is never used in questions, instead we often use if. (ในประโยคคาถาม จะใช้ if แทน that) • For example: He asked me if I would come to the party.

Student to his friend: I hate having to write tons of essays every semester.



The student complained that he had to write a lot of essays.



Julie to her neighbour: Yes, it was me who started that ugly rumour about you. I'm sorry.



Julie confessed that she had started an ugly rumour about her neighbour.

Direct and Indirect Speech • Secretary to a colleague: That's right, the meeting is on Tuesday. • The secretary confirmed that the meeting was on Tuesday.

• Customer: I don't think I'll buy this notebook after all. • The customer decided that he wouldn't buy the notebook.

• Geoffrey denied that he had bumped my car. • Student: I don't think that we could convince the professor that this is not plagiarism. • The student doubted that they could convince the professor that it was not plagiarism.

Direct and Indirect Speech • Jill: I can make fire with a stick. You know, my father taught me how to do it when I was a child. • Jill explained that her father had taught her how to make fire with a stick when she was a child.

Johnny: Well, I think we should back her up in this terrible situation.



Johnny felt that they should back her up in that terrible situation.



Secretary to boss: I'm absolutely sure that I shredded those documents.

• The secretary insisted that she had shredded the documents.

• David promised that he would be on time. • Julie: It may be Geoffrey who bumped your car. • Julie suggested that it might have been Geoffrey who had bumped my car.

Direct and Indirect Speech • 2. ประโยคคาถาม และประโยคอุทาน (Indirect questions and exclamations) • เมื่อนักเรี ยนรายงานประโยคคาถามเป็ นประโยค indirect speech นักเรี ยนไม่ตอ้ ง สลับตาแหน่ง ประธานกับกริ ยา ให้เรี ยงคาเหมือนประโยคบอกเล่า (statements) เรี ยง จากประธาน + กริ ยา และไม่ตอ้ งใช้เครื่ องหมายคาถามท้ายประโยค (question mark) ให้ใช้เครื่ องหมาย full stop

1. Yes/no questions

• เมื่อประโยค direct speech เป็ นประโยคคาถามประเภท yes/no question ให้นกั เรี ยน ใช้ if หรื อwhether (ว่า) มาเชื่ อมระหว่าง reporting clause + if/whether + clause (with no inversion) เช่น •

Alex: Have you booked the tickets for the concert?



Alex was wondering if/whether I had booked the tickets for the concert.

• Mary inquired if/whether there was a wireless network available in the library. • Peter: Is it cold outside? • Peter wants to know if/whether it is cold outside or not.

• Peter wants to know whether or not it is cold outside.

• เมื่อประโยค direct speech เป็ นประโยคคาถามประเภท wh-question ให้ นักเรี ยนใช้คาแสดงคาถาม (question word) คาเดิม (who, what, when, where, how etc.) มาเชื่อมระหว่าง reporting clause + wh-clause (with no inversion) เช่น •

•Peggy: Where do you live?



•Peggy asked me where I lived.

•Rick wanted to know who I was waiting for.

• • Ben said to me, “What are you doing?” • • Ben asked me what I was doing.

• • A stranger enquired where I lived. • • The Policemen said to us, “Where are you going?” • • The Policemen asked us where we were going.

Direct and Indirect Speech • 3. ประโยคคาสั่ ง และประโยคขอร้ อง (Indirect imperatives and requests) • เมื่อประโยค direct speech เป็ นประโยคคาสัง่ ให้ทา ( Positive Imperative)หรื อประโยคขอร้อง (request) ให้นกั เรี ยนใช้ to (หรื อ toinfinitive structure) แล้วตามด้วยกริ ยาช่องที่ 1 ได้เลย แต่ถา้ เป็ นประโยคคาสัง่ ห้าม (Negative Imperative) ให้ ใช้ not to + กริ ยาช่องที่ 1 เช่น
