Ladies and Gentlemen,

While everyone is talking about America, we are going there! We are on our way to the “Land of Opportunity” for a one-week visit whose theme is “Reformation, Bauhaus and Engineering Excellence – That’s Thuringia”. Our delegation of political and business leaders along with high-ranking representatives from the Arts and Sciences will discuss economic issues and promote Thuringia as a business location. By celebrating the anniversaries of the Reformation and the Bauhaus our state will also present its rich cultural heritage. Both anniversaries are testimony that for half a millennium, Thuringia has been a birthplace for innovations reaching across the globe. The drivers of this development can truly be called avant-garde.

nationally-minded partner in science and research. Thuringia has a very favorable environment for foreign investors and offers strong government support.

With the Thuringia Bach Festival, we pay an annual musical tribute to Johann Sebastian Bach who is among this group of pioneers. Chicago and New York, the cultural capitals of the United States, will provide the Thuringia Bach Festival with a magnificent opportunity to present itself to an international audience. This will undoubtedly further enhance the reputation of this biggest series of musical events in our state. The Thuringia delegation is delighted to be able to attend this musical highlight.

We have been able to establish good contacts and relationships between Thuringia and the US in recent years – particularly in business, science and culture. The US is one of the largest investors in our state. The United States continues to be a very desirable business location and market for Thuringian companies and offers many sales and collaborative opportunities. Against this background, the delegation’s visit is an important step that highlights our government’s support for business, economic and cultural initiatives.

In Chicago and New York, we will hold discussions with Bauhaus specialists and experts, and in Chicago we will also attend a presentation of Bauhaus ceramics featuring a number of pieces which originated in Thuringia. One hundred years ago, the Bauhaus modernized architecture and architectural concepts to create buildings that can be admired today around the world.

We wish all members of the delegation lots of success and interesting, informative discussions!

It is only natural that the Free State of Thuringia also wants to present itself in the US both as a powerful business location and an inter-

Bodo Ramelow

We have had excellent business relations with the US economic region for two decades. While there are currently some uncertainties, we must not allow them to cause permanent damage. That is why site visits, personal meetings and the exchange of information and experiences are essential to further strengthen existing ties and open up new avenues for collaboration. Our focus lies on the optical, electronic and automotive supply industries and on a digitized economy.

Preamble

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Wolfgang Tiefensee Thuringian Minister for Economic Affairs, Science and Digital Society

Building upon a very successful trip to California earlier this year, it is time to spread our Thuringian wings onto other parts of the United States – more specifically the Midwest. Unlike California with its strong focus on software and creative industries, the former Rust Belt is the heartland of the traditional, manufacturing America and home to many well established multinational companies and cutting-edge research institutions from a variety of conventional industries. It is especially Michigan that offers with its booming automotive industry an almost endless source of new economic potentials for our similarly structured Free State. It should not come as a surprise that the vast majority of US investors in Thuringia have their corporate headquarters in Michigan but also that many of Thuringian companies have chosen this region as a starting point for their US business footprint. In line with all that, our trip will start in the Comeback City of Detroit – the home of the Big Three OEMs (GM, Ford, FCA) and a number of world leading Tier 1 and 2 automotive suppliers. Together, we will get to meet a select number of these leading companies, visit high-calibre research facilities and meet pioneering entrepreneurs. This offers us a very unique opportunity to experience new trends in the automotive industry, which showcases at the same time growing collaborations and more competition between traditional automotive companies and high-tech newcomers. Our Thuringian companies will have great opportunities for business-to-business discussions with local companies, which may open up new channels for introducing our great know-how and innovative products to markets in the US. A perfect complement to this is our short detour to North and South Carolina where most of European and German automotive OEMs have established their North American presence. Especially the high-class meetings with the BMW management in Spartanburg (BMW’s largest production facility worldwide), SC will be one of the highlights of the whole trip. When talking about the convergence of the Old and New Economy in the United States, an inevitable location is Chicago, which has developed into a hub of the smart and automated industrial manufacturing (Industry 4.0). Exciting meetings with global players such as Boeing or Molex and excellent research and cluster organisations in Illinois will enable our

participants to stay on top of current market trends and innovations in the industry and open up new business opportunities. As we are approaching the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus, there is no way around the city of Chicago and its unique heritage in architecture and design, which is also seen as a truly legitimate continuity for the Bauhaus. The cooperation between the Bauhaus University and the School of the Art Institute Chicago, or the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY, can also be counted along this American continuity of the ideas of Bauhaus. This special relationship will flourish in a special cooperation to commemorate the Bauhaus anniversary in 2019 between Weimar, Chicago and New York – as the second great hub of design and architecture in the USA. Our last stop is definitely not the least one – New York City! The combination of innovation, entrepreneurship, finance and creativity with traditional industrial production processes render the Big Apple a proper culmination of our business journey. After the signing ceremony of a Memorandum of Understanding between the PRATT INSTITUTE Brooklyn and Bauhaus University, we are especially looking forward to meeting the executives of Harry’s Inc. – owner of Feintechnik GmbH in Eisfeld. With its disruptive market penetration strategy in the shaving industry, this fascinating newcomer is displaying a perfect example of a successful Old and New Economy convergence with a high-quality Thuringian engineering product being the facilitator of this success story. Once again we want to stress the importance of further strengthening the already intensive economic and scientific ties between Thuringia and the US. Together we should grasp the opportunity as an economic and scientific delegation to exchange best practices, explore potentials for possible collaborations and open up new doors for a more intensified exchange of ideas, products and know-how between USA and Thuringia. I do hope that all delegates will enjoy a successful visit with plenty of encouraging conversations and promising contacts! Sincerely yours,

Wolfgang Tiefensee Thuringian Minister for Economic Affairs, Science and Digital Society
