A Special Man and a Special Day

n Wednesday, October 20th, Regis Philbin '49, was honored by Archbishop Timothy Dolan and Father Joseph Tierney at a very special Mass in the new Regis Philbin Auditorium. Regis’ commitment to Hayes over the years has exemplified what it is to be a true Hayesmen. Blessed with charisma, unselfishness and success, Regis Philbin and his wife Joy have always found a place in the hearts for Cardinal Hayes. To cheers and fist-bumps from about 900 Cardinal Hayes High School students, Regis and Archbishop Timothy Dolan embraced Hayes at the dedication of the Regis Philbin Auditorium.

$1,000,000 Gift to Hayes Making the dedication extra special was the attendance of Helen Gurley Brown of Cosmopolitan magazine fame. As announced by Regis himself, Ms. Brown made a financial commitment to Cardinal Hayes to the tune of a $1,000,000 endowment gift. After offering Mass, Archbishop Dolan remarked during the dedication about Hayes’ celebrity status, but spoke more seriously about the benefits of a Catholic education… "I think Cardinal Hayes is second only to Yankee Stadium as one of the most famous places in the Bronx, don't you think?" asked Dolan to cheers. "We all know a Catholic education is very expensive - that's why we're honored today to be here with Mr. and Mrs. Philbin, and Ms. Brown"…"Young people learn a lot more by example than by words."

HAYES HOLDS FIRST PRESIDENT'S COUNCIL DAY

n Thursday, November 4th, 2010, Cardinal Hayes High School hosted it's First Annual President' Council Day, in a Round Table Forum. After a Mass presided by Father Tierney, a panel consisting of Administrators, Father Tierney, William Lessa, and rep resentatives of the Alumni, Development, Athletics Offices and several Faculty and Staff, gathered to discuss their various departments and the State of Hayes with

members of the 2009-2010 President’s Council. However, the most compelling accounts of what Hayes is today came from the panel of six current students who clearly articulated why they chose Hayes and the benefits the decision to attend Hayes has afforded them. The President’s Council is made up of those alumni and friends who contribute $1,000 or more annually to The 650 Fund.

John Timony ’67 Speaks at Networking Night

I

n 2009, Cardinal Hayes started a new tradition and speaker series for our alumni and friends… The Hayes Alumni and Networking and Christmas Event was started with guest speaker Tom Baldwin, ’74 CEO of Morton’s Steak Houses. This past Christmas at our second event, John Timony, ’67 author of NYPD, Philly PD and Miami PD fame spoke to a wonderful group of alumni and friends at Rosie O’Grady’s. Timony retired from the NYPD in 1996. A year later, he was lured to Philadelphia and later Miami in 2003. After Miami, John took some time and wrote his book, "Beat Cop to Top Cop”. Most recently he served as adjunct professor at Harvard University. (at left) John Timony ’67, Steve Bonano ’79

people fairly. He helped mold and shape us into the men we became." "Hayes has been a big part of my life," he said. "I have great feelings for this place."

"It never was a job," admitted the man whose 586 wins and three Catholic High School Athletic Association state titles as Cardinals coach earned him membership in the New York State Basketball Hall of Fame. "It was fun! You're around sports and the kids. And I've had some very good bosses here that put things in perspective." Tom retired officially at the end of the 2010 School year. He also Served Hayes well as athletic director for the past 25 years. Coach Murray retired so that he could spend more time with his wife, Mary, his four children and the eight grandchildren. Tom will retire as the winningest coach in Hayes’ history. He earned a reputation as a superb tactician, a no-nonsense practice teacher and a superior game coach. He has sent several players to Division I colleges, including Jimmy Black ’78, the starting point guard on the 1982 NCAA champion North Carolina Tar Heels, and Jamal Mashburn ’90, a former NBA all-star and current ESPN basketball analyst. to our young Hayesmen. His presentation was warmly received and his message of perseverance and dedication will certainly have an impact of their lives.

That famous line, of course, came form the movie “Rudy” about a young walk-on player at Notre Dame, Daniel (Rudy) Ruettiger, Thanks to the sponsorship of Mr. Kevin Reed, Rudy visited Cardinal Hayes in December and had a chance to speak to, motivate and listen

Prior to Rudy’s visit, under the direction of Casey Conner, Director of the Scorsese Media Center, the school presented, critiqued and discussed, “Rudy” the film with the entire Hayes house.

Senior Kenneth Hicks’11 is latest recipient of the New York Times Scholarship

S

enior Kenneth Hicks ’11, continuing a long and excellent tradition at Cardinal Hayes, is the latest recipient of the prestigious New York Times Scholarship which is awarded yearly to New York City students who exhibit outstanding academic achievement, a commitment to learning and community service, success in the face of adversity, and significant financial need. Since the scholarship’s inception in 1999, Hayes has produced a winner almost every year. However, there was something particularly striking and compelling about Kenneth’s story that moved the Times scholarship committee. Last year, after a long battle with cancer, Kenneth’s mother passed away. They had an incredibly close relationship. Her loss was devastating, but Kenneth was in many ways stoic and did not seek sympathy or condolences. He was in school the morning of her wake so he could take his religion examination: he earned the highest score on that exam and then went to the wake and attended to all of the friends, family and faculty that attended. A few days later, at the annual Dr. King Speech Night, he gave a heart wrenching speech about his unwavering love for her and his desire to be successful so as to uphold all of the values she instilled within him. He had learned from watching his mother that he needed to be strong and successful because if she could handle the pains of chemotherapy with such dignity then he too could handle anything life threw at him. Kenneth’s four years have been nothing short of remarkable. As only a sophomore, he was inducted into Hayes’ chapter of the National Honor Society. In his senior year, he was selected unanimously to become the Society’s president. As president, he has organized countless school and community service activities such as the Christmas Toy Drive, the November coat collection for the Salvation Army, and an event to aid

the elderly at the Mary Manning Walsh Center in the Upper East Side. All the while, he has maintained a straight A average and is well on his way to becoming this year’s valedictorian. In December of last year, he received early admission and a full ride to Columbia University where he plans on majoring in English. The New York Times Scholarship is just another accomplishment in the exemplary academic career of this brilliant Hayesman. As one of the winners Kenneth will receive a four-year scholarship of $7,500 annually which will go toward any additional expenses while he attends Columbia University. In addition he will also receive a summer internship at The New York Times, educational and job counseling, mentoring, cultural experiences, and a laptop computer.

Kenneth Hiehs, 2nd from left, joins other Hayesmen to speak about their Hayes experience.

The 650 Fund T

he 650 FUND is The Annual Appeal for Cardinal Hayes High School and will serve as the primary annual fundraising source for the Cardinal and Gold Fund. The 650 FUND will accept contributions each Fiscal Year from September 1st through August 31st. The purpose of The 650 FUND is designed to raise ‘unrestricted” monies for tuition and operational assistance, athletic and extra-curricular activities, faculty and staff enhancements, educational and religious programs, and meeting the Mission and Philosophy of Cardinal Hayes… This year, The 650 Fund is designed to raise as much as $800,000 in funds for 2011. To date we have already received over $600,000. The 650 FUND’s success will help Cardinal Hayes and the Cardinal and Gold Fund look to bigger and better things and assist with the current transition. The 650 FUND provides a steady flow of annual income over and above the funds received from tuition. The 650 Fund has become the cornerstone and key to success for all fundraising at Cardinal Hayes. The 650 Fund provides incentives and the means for parents, alumni and friends to contribute private, tax deductible gifts that will directly benefit Cardinal Hayes. Contributions to The Cardinal and Gold Fund directly enhance the Catholic Education and the experience of our young Hayesmen.

THE PRESIDENT’S COUNCIL The President’s Council is Cardinal Hayes’ premier giving society. All donors who contribute an annual gift of $1,000 or more will be recognized for their generosity and commitment to the school. Each year, all President’s Council members will be invited to a special day at Hayes where they will have a chance to see our progress and hear first-hand news from the leaders of the Cardinal and Gold Fund and Cardinal Hayes Please note that contributions of any size are graciously accepted. The number of individuals who participate is a significant factor in attracting talented students and faculty, and influencing corporate and foundation grant support. Our success in gaining recognition as THE leader in Catholic High School education consistently will be made possible by the generous support of foundations, corporations, and most importantly, our community of alumni, parents and friends. In essence, any gift increases the perception and value of the Cardinal Hayes experience.

HAYESMEN JOIN IN ESTABLISHING FUTURE OF HAYES Bishop Brucato ’61, Calebrese ’50, Driscoll ’53 and Martinez ’71 Lead the Way

S

ince the new fiscal year started in September of 2010, giving to Cardinal Hayes through the 650 Fund has taken huge strides. Bishop Robert Brucato, ’61, established the Bishop Brucato Endowed Scholarship for tuition assistance to Hayes students. His initial gift may be added to in years to come and will be a testament to the thoughtfulness that established the gift. In December, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Calabrese ’50 made a generous six figure gift in support of the Hayes Baseball program and the general scholarship fund. Their gift will help supply new baseball uniforms and purchase new equipment and training gear; additional

funds were set aside for tuition assistance for baseball players. Additionally, $50,000 of their contribution was set aside to assist any Hayes student with a serious financial need. By way of an estate Gift, Lt. Col. Louis Martinez ’71, (passed in 2010) a career soldier, left Hayes well over $200,000 from his estate. Year’s earlier, Mr. Martinez established in his will a portion of his estate to go directly to Cardinal Hayes High School. With the assistance of his sister, Margarita Virgilio, Cardinal Hayes will use a portion of his funding to help students with financial needs over the next few years as well as establishing an endowment gift…. The Martinez Endowed Scholarship.

At the request of Mrs. Marion Driscoll, Barrie’s wife, Cardinal Hayes High School is also establishing the Barrie Driscoll Annual scholarship which, within three years, will fund 3 students at Hayes. The giving exemplified by the above individuals along with all those who have made other substantial contributions to Hayes over the years, combined with EVERY participant in The 650 Fund is what is keeping Hayes alive and well. Thank you.

HAYESMEN HIGHLIGHT

A Private Man – Lt. Col. Louis M, Martinez, ’71

A

fter graduating Hayes with honors, Lt. Col. Louis Martinez, ’71, went on to Fordham University and graduated Magna Cum Laud. Although known as a relatively private man, he was quite accomplished. Louis never married and made the US Army his life. Having lived in Georgia for most of his adult life he was an avid runner and competed in over 10 Marathons. He served his country well as a sharp shooter and battalion leader. Louis was also a published writer, having written “Fort McPherson -

The First 100 Year 1885-1985”. For whatever reasons, Louis was relatively out of Hayes’s eyes for years, however, Hayes was always in his sights and was apparently a notable foundation for his success. Upon his passing, Cardinal Hayes was informed by his sister, Margarita Virgilio that Louis had left a sizable gift to Cardinal Hayes. That gift will live forever at Hayes as The Louis Martinez Endowed Scholarship.

Hayes Sports THE 2010 TURKEY BOWL

W

ith record crowds and unmatched enthusiasm, The Cardinal Hayes Varsity Football Team was stopped short in the end by football archrivals from the north, Mount St. Michael (24-21). The Cardinals under leadership of Coach CJ O’Neil and a wonderful team of assistant coaches, had a successful 2010 campaign going 6-4 throughout the season. It is expected that several players will take their football careers to the college level.

LACROSSE ON THE CONCOURSE Varsity Lacrosse Team

F

irst-year coach and Director of Development, John Connolly, along with Assistant Coach Justin Simon, took the players from what was Lacrosse 101 to a team that would learn how to pass, catch, play strong defense and eventually score. The Hayes team was the first “Developmental” team in CHSAA Lacrosse to win a game and ended its season with a 3-12 record. This years team was funded and equipped directly by Kevin Reed, Joe Riley, ’71, The Rusty Red Foundation, Tri-State Lax, Warrior, Cascade Lacrosse, CW Post College and Port Jefferson Sports. This year marked a new beginning in Hayes Athletics… Boys Varsity Lacrosse! Last summer, 60 students arrived on “The Duff” with lacrosse sticks in hand and attended a two-day camp. Thanks to the vision and support of Father Tierney and Mr. William Lessa and the financial support of Kevin Reed, lax is at the Grand Concourse.

SLAM DUNK - HAYES 3 ON 3 TOURNAMENT A GREAT SUCCESS!!!

T

his year, in lieu of the traditional Alumni Basketball Game, Cardinal Hayes held a 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament on Saturday, April 16th. Twelve teams entered the tournament and over 60 alumni, faculty and friends played a minimum of 3 games, concluding with a very competitive Championship Game. Congratulations to the Class of 1992, “Al Thompson's - ValDean Entertainment” for winning the first Hayes 3 on 3 Tournament!!! A special thanks is extended to the Alumni Association and the Hayes Alumni Office for coordinating this inaugural event. Up Hayes!

he Cardinal Hayes High School Varsity Basketball Program, under the leadership of head coach Joseph Lods and assistant coach Justin Simon, has made strides in the right direction over the last couple of years. Our Frosh Basketball Team has competed in back-to-back City Championship games, falling short in 2008-2009, but not this year, winning the 2009-2010 CHSAA City Championship. Hayes Varsity Basketball finished the regular season 18-4, and made a run in the playoffs to qualify for the Championship game against heated rival Mt. St. Michael at Fordham University. The Cardinals started out a little slow, but made a strong run at the end, only to come up a little short. Congratulations to Coach Lods the Varsity basketball team and the entire Hayes Basketball Program for a great year.

CITY AND STATE SUCCESS FOR TRACK

T

he 2010-2011 Cardinal Hayes Indoor Track season was successfully completed by by having six athletes attend the New York State Championship Meet at Cornell University. At the NY City Championships, the Hayes 4 x 200 team consisting of Patrick Heumegni, Abraham Ocasio, Brandon Knight, and Dequane June took first in the Catholic High School City Championship. Yuon Flemming placed first in the 55 meter high hurdles at the Catholic High School City Championship Meet and Nicholas Vidal gave a strong performance in the 300 meter dash to finish second.

Over 60 alumni, faculty and friends participate in the Inaugural 3-3 Tournament.

The recent success of the Hayes track team can be directly attributed to talent nurtured by a strong coaching foundation. The new agenda and practice plan of Coach Craig Joseph has undoubtedly shown that Hayes is still a force to be reckoned with. The Hayes Track Team now turns its focus to their outdoor season with further hopes of success. 15
