If you are a music lover, I’m sure you won’t want to miss it! Shipley Center has traveled with this company before, last year to Sedona, AZ, and I heard the tour guides were great. This 9-day adventure begins May 2, 2018, and is all about America’s Musical Heritage. Here are the highlights, for your review:  St. Louis City Tour  3 Nights in Branson  Shoji Tabuchi Show  The Duttons Show  Showboat Branson Belle  Curling Vine Winery  Dour Gabriel Show  Clinton Presidential Library  Graceland  Beal Street Dinner  Memphis City Tour  National Civil Rights Museum  Peabody Duck March  2 nights – Opryland Resort  Grand Ole Opry  Country Music Hall of Fame  Nashville Nightlife Dinner Theatre

Beth Barrett, Trips & Tours Coordinator

NOOooo . . . it can’t be November already! The year is almost over! Get ready for that turkey to enter into the picture . . . among other things! The group on the 4-day excursion to Sun Mountain in October had a great time at the Cowboy Barbeque and visiting the little town of Winthrop! One of the most popular trips last month was the Tacoma Holiday Food and Gift Show. Unfortunately, the Sol Duc trip and the Tommy Dorsey show had to be cancelled, as too few people signed up. This month, we will be visiting the Seattle Art Museum where works of Andrew Wyeth will be on display. Several of you have expressed an interest in this exhibit, and as I write this, only 5 seats are left. The Victoria Holiday has only 4 openings, but who knows, by the time this newsletter goes out, I might have to change that to “0”. DECEMBER 1 AT 1:00! Put this on your calendar if you like music and think you’d like to experience Branson & Nashville. You will probably need to sign up at the presentation, as it is only 6 months out. For more info read my highlighted article! HAMILTON TICKETS: Here’s the bad news, folks. They are NOT offering group tickets. I would suggest signing up to the eClub through the following web page: www.stgpresents.org/enews/signup#broadway. You will get information on ordering tickets for yourself. Hamilton tickets are not available through Shipley Center. I am starting to plan for next year! If you have any ideas for 3- or 4-day trips, shoot me an email . . . or talk to me personally! Several of you have put your name on my roommate list for overnight trips. You are able to meet others also wanting to share rooms. Let me know if you would like to be in this group: Travel Roommate Inquiry Programmers (aka TRIPers!) Just one more reminder: Shipley Center would LOVE to have a few more volunteer CDL bus drivers to take us on our wonderful adventures! Talk to Beth or Michelle. As always, call and RESERVE!

See you on the Shipley bus!

A Magical Day on Mykonos Island! By Margaret Cox As many of you already know, I recently returned from a two-month European adventure with my long-time friend of 62 years, Shannon. Embarking on Holland America’s Westerdam in Venice, we spent one day in Albania before eight days in Greece. Instead of describing multiple ports and/or sites, I thought I would pretty much re-write my journal entry of our day on the Greek island of Mykonos (mi-kuh-nos). Enjoy. . . . Chora, Mykonos Island, Greece A delightful day today, from beginning to end! Awoke with no set itinerary for the day. Pulled back the curtains to the “poster child” view of what Margaret on Santorini Island one thinks of as “Greek” . . . pristine white block buildings with blue doors, shutters, and railings, rising up the hillside from the crystal-clear azure sea. After a leisurely breakfast in the dining room, we went off for our island adventure! The choice to get from the ship to the city was to take a free bus, or a boat for two euros. Well, of course, we had to take the boat, right to the center of Chora! (Many people who cruise often select other boat excursions at various destinations!) Chora is a beautiful town, and we walked a lot, along the cobblestone seaside promenade, and through hilly, narrow streets barely wide enough for two people to pass, none of which were at right angles to another! The stone pathways were lined with small shops, one cozied up next to the other. These narrow, winding streets were made that way to foil pirates who came in from the sea to rob the citizens of the island. Apparently, the residents could bar their doors, and go up to the second-story small balconies, and would pour boiling water and grease over the hapless pirates who would have no way of knowing which street was the way back to their ship. Sounds pretty gruesome to me. Narrow Streets of Mykonos Bet it kept the pirates at bay, though! Walked over the island to the windmills built by Venetians to mill flour, overlooking “Little Venice” an area of balconied restaurants on the waterfront. Had a cold drink at one of them before heading back toward the main harbor, where we had lunch at a Greek taverna. . . the special pepper-flavored cheese of the island—kopanisti—and spinach pie. Both were listed as “appetizers”, but they could have easily fed a third person! Returned by boat to the ship; Shannon went swimming and I did some work on the computer. A delicious meal at the Pinnacle Grill was followed by an amazing BBC presentation of a 16th Century Venetian Windmills documentary, Frozen Planet Live. This was a visual and musical collaboration between the BBC and Holland America. As the movie ran, our ten on-board musicians—the piano quintet, and the five members of the Westerdam Show Band—played music scored for that specific movie . . . live . . . on stage! It was a very moving experience. Returning to our stateroom, we opened the curtains to see what was outside, and were entranced by the glow of an almost full-moon reflected across the water, with pin-points of light from the island receding into the distance. A magical end to a “Little Venice” where we had our drinks at the café with wonderful day on the special island of Mykonos. the lowest roof on the right

Michael’s Message

BY MICHAEL SMITH, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

From The Suggestion Box We at Shipley Center always appreciate suggestions to improve the Center and/or save money on its operations. We want everything to be efficient and above reproach. These are some recent suggestions received in response to our appeal for monetary help sent with the election ballots for the board of directors. I wish to thank those of you who have already donated over $500—as I write this— towards the election costs! Have you considered emailing the ballot? Yes, we have. Unfortunately, hundreds of our members do not have email addresses and/or “don’t do” computers. In addition, some couples share an email address, and the bylaws require us to send a ballot to each member individually. If we provide the ballot in electronic form, attached to an email, unlimited copies could be printed and someone could “stuff the ballot box.” We are aware of online voting software that enables voting online without using paper, but we are not yet ready to go in that direction, especially with every individual not having email. Does this make sense? Why could not all ballots have been in our newsletter? Only members are eligible to vote, but our newsletter is distributed far and wide to many non-members. In addition, households with more than one person get just one newsletter, so would be short a ballot. Finally, the return envelope cannot be mechanically easily inserted into our newsletter. Also, inserting two more sheets (candidate statements and ballot) into the newsletter does not save us the cost of printing them. It would add additional processing fees and possibly postage. So, this method would not save as much money as one might think. Why not save money by mailing two ballots in one envelope to couples at the same address? We thought of this, too, but to protect the integrity of an election, each individual needs his/her own ballot, sent to them individually. This is the only mailing we do each year where we can’t economize by combining things into one envelope for couples. If, however, you are getting more than one newsletter or fundraising letter at your address, please let us know and we can save money by stopping one of them. Cost of Doing Business We save money every way we can, but unfortunately the annual board election is not something we want to mess with that might cast any doubt on the integrity of the process. For an organization with 1800 members, the board election is just one of those “costs of doing business.” Uncontested Elections Another idea, especially in years like this one where we had an uncontested election, is to forgo the mailing of ballots and have all the balloting happen at the Center. The front desk would be everyone’s “polling place” where your membership status would be verified and you would be handed a ballot to fill out and cast it anonymously in the ballot collection box. The downside of that method is that our members who are homebound would not have a voice in our board elections. And those who make few trips into the Center, or who live a long distance away, might have to make a special trip in to vote, or not be able to vote at all. (We have members all over the Olympic Peninsula and a few that live out of state.) To solve this issue, perhaps uncontested elections could be held in person, and only contested elections would result in ballots being mailed out. But, making these sorts of changes in election methods would require a change in the language of our bylaws, which the board could consider before next year’s election process. Many thanks for your ideas, suggestions and support! My sincere wishes for a Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.

Michael

This check included $5,000 in matching funds and a $10,000 award for raising the most money during the event from the foundation. Without the support of over 50 donors, Shipley Center would not have secured the $15,000 in matching funds and award money. Thank you to all who made this possible!

We have the opportunity to get additional matching funds from the Home Instead Senior Care Foundation. From 10pm, Monday, November 27 to 10pm, Tuesday, November 28, the first $50,000 total in donations given to participating charities, will be matched. Please help us in getting as much of this $50,000 as we can! Stay tuned for an email with a link to follow for donating during the event! If you have questions, please contact Michelle Rhodes.

Shipley Center Welcomes Sound Dental Care Shipley Center is excited to announce that we are now hosting Sound Dental Care within the center, with appointments available November 17. The initial appointment is $99, with each appointment after being $129. Sarah Luetke, the hygienist for Sound Dental Care, has been working in private practice for the past fourteen years and in assisted living environments for the past three years. She founded Sound Dental Care to help patients maintain a sense of independence as they age and to provide a more convenient and affordable option for seniors that are seeking basic dental care. Sound Dental Care offers limited oral evaluations, basic dental cleanings, periodontal treatments, scaling and root planing, fluoride varnish applications, and silver diamine fluoride applications. If you are looking for this type of dental care solution, you are encouraged to obtain an enrollment packet at the front desk. Wanted: Great new AARP TAX-AIDE Volunteers! It’s November . . . and, believe it or not, time is running out to sign up as an AARP TAX-AIDE volunteer! All our new volunteers must be signed up BY December to become IRS-certified before the start of the tax season. If you’re thinking about joining our crew of TAX-AIDE volunteers, you probably have some of the following questions. So here are some answers for you: Do I need a background in tax preparation to become a TAX-AIDE volunteer? Although having that background is wonderful, and makes your training and IRS certification easier, we have volunteers from all walks of life. We have teachers, service personnel, bankers, accountants, musicians, etc. –both retired and not-yet-retired— serving the Sequim area as TAX-AIDE volunteers. Do I have to be a member of AARP to volunteer? No! The pr ogr am is suppor ted by the IRS and the AARP Foundation—so that’s why “AARP” is in our name—but membership is certainly not required. Taxpayers do not need to be seniors, or retired, or AARP members to receive our tax preparation service either. Who would I serve as a TAX-AIDE volunteer? Pr edominantly low-and-middle-income taxpayers in our community. Many are young working families; many are middle-aged; many are seniors. ALL are appreciative of the TAX-AIDE service! What is involved in the training? Two days of or ientation tr aining—December 4th & 5th in Sequim--introduce new volunteers to the program and to the tax preparation software and training materials that the IRS provides. If you want, you will also be assigned a mentor at the orientation training. Unless you have a background as a tax preparer, you will need to do an extensive amount of self-study during December and early January to learn the tax law and the software in time for the tax season. You will attend two more days of “Review training” on January 4 th & 5th to help tie everything together for you. Along the way, you will be required to complete tax return exercises to demonstrate your proficiency with tax law and use of the software. Ultimately, by mid-January, you will be required to pass a minimum of two IRS Tests. These tests must be passed each year before assisting the taxpayers. Once I pass the IRS Tests, what are my obligations during the tax season? You ar e r equir ed to volunteer a minimum of four hours per week during the tax season. The majority of our volunteers work a full day or two per week. In Sequim, we volunteer on Wednesdays and Saturdays at the Shipley Center. What’s in it for me? Fr ee tax pr epar ation tr aining pr ovided by the IRS . . . Good br ain exer cise . . . Giving back to your community in a specialized way . . . Getting to work with a dedicated and fun team of volunteers . . . Volunteers even enjoy better health & happiness! . . . Mostly, being showered by deep appreciation from the taxpayers, who SO appreciate our service! Most of our TAX-AIDE volunteers come back year after year to serve the taxpayers . . . it is not an easy volunteer endeavor, but it IS a rewarding one! How do I sign up? (Oh, good for you!) Fill out an online application at www.aar p.or g/taxaide. Once your application is processed, your Local Coordinator (Julia Roberts, [email protected]) will be in touch with you. Remember, sign up BY December! - and WELCOME!!
