ADR processes can dramatically decrease time delays, party costs and the uncertainty felt by parties in dispute. How can Land Claims and Native Title issues be tackled using ADR mechanisms? How can mediators, arbitrators and representatives assist? Helen Shurven is one of four Members of the National Native Title Tribunal, appointed by the Governor General of Australia. Helen is an accredited mediator under the Australian National Mediation Standards and has conducted hundreds of hours of face to face and telephone mediation in native title matters. She has made over 300 arbitral decisions under the Native Title Act 1993.
Stephen Wright has held the office of Registrar since 2002. He is a graduate in politics and law from Macquarie University and before entering public service he worked for the New South Wales Aboriginal Land Council prosecuting the cause of land rights under the Aboriginal Land Rights Act 1983. The Registrar has functions to mediate, conciliate and arbitrate disputes arising under the ALRA

Tony McAvoy is a Wiri man from the central Queensland area around Clermont. He is also a Kullilli person through his grandmother. Tony has practiced from Frederick Jordan Chambers in Martin Place Sydney since 2000. Although practicing from chambers in Sydney, Tony has a national practice with a large proportion of his work being in native title work. In 2010 Tony was awarded the Inaugural National Indigenous Legal Professional of the Year Award by
then Attorney-General, the Honourable Robert McLelland. From 2011 to 2013, Tony held an appointment as an Acting Part-Time Commissioner on NSW Land and Environment Court. He has was appointed to the Federal Court native title mediators list in 2014. He was appointed as Senior Counsel for the State of New South Wales in September 2015.
