DEAR CORPUS CHRISTI FOOD BANK SUPPORTERS, The past 12 months have been an overwhelming success for the Food Bank of Corpus Christi, accomplishing many goals and setting some new records with total distribution of 8.1 million pounds of food and over 6.3 million meals! That’s an equivalent of close to $14 million dollars of food being distributed throughout the eleven counties we serve. Our mobile pantries program distributed over 3 million pounds of food or 2.3 million meals to 27 agency sites in rural areas and surrounding South Texas counties. Additionally, our Community Outreach department reached just shy of 438,000 potential applicants and our USDA / Nutrition Education group made contact with over 36,000 candidates and conducted 138 classes in 118 different sites. Your support also helped facilitate programs such as our Diabetes Hands On program and in conjunction with Feeding America, the Backpack Program and the Kid’s Café.

It is hard to believe that 2017 is in full swing, and summer is upon us. I, for one, am glad I will have my air conditioner constantly running during the hot, South Texas heat. We know though, that some people in our community do not have that luxury. Some of our neighbors have to choose between paying their electric bill and buying groceries. With kids out of school for summer vacation, some parents wonder how they are going to make up all of the free lunches their kids receive at school. Our mission is to help alleviate these stresses so families can focus on being together. Thank you for all you do to help the Food Bank achieve this goal.

Irma loved her job as a nurse, and had been in nursing for 27 years. However, last October the unthinkable happened when she was involved in a bad car accident which left her with severe back injuries. Not being able to go back to work, she and her husband, Tom, now have to rely on his security guard income to survive. Luckily, she found out through her church about South Texas Helping Hands Ministries, a Food Bank of Corpus Christi partner agency in Pettus. Here she can get fresh, nutritious foods to take home like breads, fruits, vegetables, and meats. Today, she is joined by a little helper, her grandson. Corbin, two, walks up and down the aisles of the pantry with grandma, munching on some apples and grapes (his favorites). With his ringlet curls and beautiful, brown eyes,

it’s not hard to tell that he is a ladies’ man. Irma is thankful on the days she gets to watch Corbin as well as her other six grandchildren and one great grandchild. Sometimes, it’s hard for her to chase them around, however, because of her injuries. The doctors tell her she needs surgery to fuse her back. Without receiving any other type of assistance, Irma and Tom are very thankful for South Texas Helping Hands. “This helps a lot of people,” she says. Irma shouldn’t have to worry about where her next meal is coming from. Because of your support, she and Tom can sleep a little better tonight knowing that they have food in their cabinets. “I’m very grateful for this service and for those who have helped!” she says with a smile.

Sonny, has always been known in the Beeville community as a handyman and could fix just about anything. However when the air conditioning company he worked for moved to Corpus a year ago, Sonny was laid off. He’s been looking for work tirelessly ever since then, but job openings are scarce. After a year of frustration, Sonny gave up and decided to retire and apply for Social Security at the age of 77. This past year has been a tough one for Sonny. With no income, he has had to sell his personal belongings, including his stove and other appliances, just to put food on his table and to buy some of the prescriptions he desperately needs. As health problems come with age, Sonny suffers from diabetes and knee problems. Dealing with the stresses of the year has also caused severe anxiety and depression. “I don’t know how many medications that I take,” he admits. Unfortunately, his out of pocket expenses for

Seven-year-old Kaylie, like most first graders, is a big spunk of energy. She loves to run and play outside and ride her scooter. She can even keep up with the boys when playing baseball. There is one thing that Kaylie has to deal with that no child should have to endure: hunger. Kaylie lives at home with her grandmother, Ana. It’s just the two of them, and they are very close. Ana, 70, works as a home health aide, and when there is no work, her company cannot pay her. Her current patient has been in the hospital for six months, and in that time, Ana has not received a paycheck. She’s had to sell her car in order to pay off bills and to provide for little Kaylie. Being behind on bills, there is not nearly enough left over to buy groceries to last her the month. Ana does odd jobs, like cleaning

medicine have gotten so high, that he’s stopped taking most of his pills. Each month, he picks the medications that he desperately needs and that he can afford. After talking to a local church in Beeville, Sonny found out about The Beeville Vineyard, a Food Bank of Corpus Christi partner agency. Here, he is able to get a box of food five times a year. “It helps quite a bit!” Sonny says. He’s especially grateful when he gets fresh produce and other healthy staples that won’t cause his diabetes to get out of control. As someone who used to have good credit and even used to make donations to the Food Bank, it’s hard for Sonny to be on the receiving end now. Being a senior citizen, Sonny knows how important it is for organizations like the Vineyard to exist for people like him. “It would be bad (without it). People would starve. I don’t know what we would

houses, to get a little money to purchase milk, eggs, and other staple items. Recently, Ana found out about her local Food Bank of Corpus Christi partner agency, New Covenant Church in Falfurrias. Here, Ana is able to get a box of food that will help her make meals for little Kaylie. “She is not picky! She will eat salads every day!” Ana lovingly says about her granddaughter. Kaylie is a vegetable lover and especially likes corn, carrots, broccoli, and even cabbage! Ana admits that she will often times skip meals as long as Kaylie gets something to eat. “She’ll come up to me and say ‘Oh Grandma, I’ll share with you!’” While Ana is extremely proud how her granddaughter is growing up, she knows that without friends and supporters like you, Kaylie would go to bed hungry. “Thank you,”

A STORY FROM CORPUS CHRISTI

JOE, SABRINA, KEITH, MADELINE, LEANA, JOSETTE

How are we going to feed our kids today? This was the question Sabrina wept to her husband of ten years, Joe, this morning. The couple is new to the area and until recently, they were living out of their truck with their four kids: Keith, 10, Madeline, 2, Leana, 1, and little Josette, just 3 weeks old. When their car broke down and got towed, Joe and Sabrina didn’t have the money to get it back. Luckily, the family was able to get a place, rent-free, until Joe is able to secure a new job. Although it has no air conditioning, furniture, stove, or refrigerator, and is filled with mosquitoes, they would at least have someplace to stay. Each day, Joe leaves in the morning and walks many, many blocks in search of a job. The family has been living on packets of ramen for days now, until this morning when their supply ran out.

It’s very much appreciated,” Joe says. “You are our superheroes.” “When we got up this morning, we had no food,” Sabrina admits. Joe set out, desperate to find food for his family. After seeing no other option, Joe was headed to the grocery store to steal a loaf of bread or two to make sure his kids had something in their bellies. As he walked, Joe found a dollar on the ground. Relieved, he figured he could turn around and head to the Dollar General to buy a pack of ramen for their family to split. On his way, he walked by a line of people at the Metropolitan

Church in Corpus Christi. That’s when he found out about the Food Bank’s mobile pantry that was there distributing food. Joe couldn’t believe it. He immediately returned home and brought his family to the pantry. Here, they were able to get bags of fresh fruits and vegetables as well as breads, nuts, drinks, and more! Sabrina cries happy tears as she realizes her kids will not have to go to bed hungry tonight. Joe and Sabrina struggle to put into words how supporters like you made a difference in their lives. “It’s very much appreciated,” Joe says. “You are our superheroes.” You never know what a family’s situation may be. Every dollar donation to the Food Bank of Corpus Christi translates into seven meals. If you’d like to help families like Joe and Sabrina’s, visit our website today and click donate.

GOOD SAMARITAN RESCUE MISSION • NOTE OF THANKS

McCabe, W. P. McCain, Bobbi McCall, Samantha McCarty, Melissa McCarty, Oswin McColgan, Mary Elizabeth McColley, James & Blanca McCracken, Kevin McCrone, Susan McCutchon, Fred McDaniel, Bonnie

Hi Bea! I would like to give you and your staff about one million hugs for all you have done for us from the extra supply of water when the City’s water was undrinkable… to storing our cold foods for us when our walk-in went out for several days… to all the freebies and fresh produce you are giving us now. We finally figured out that if we can’t store enough food, we can just make more runs to the Food Bank. You are totally AWESOME. We are cooking almost 600 meals daily with two large snacks, and we couldn’t do it without you. Lord, drown The Food Bank and their team in blessings! Miesch, Laurie T Mijares, Maria S. Mikolasky, Barbara Milburn, Willis Miles, Pearl Millard, Susan Miller, Donald

That none may perish, Carole Murphrey Executive Director, Good Samaritan Rescue Mission
