OUR NEW LEARNING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM IS HERE! Research tells us that great organizations are learning organizations. Over the years, Orange County has provided professional development opportunities for all employees. In order to take our organizational learning experience to the next level, the Organizational Development & Training team has been working over the past several months to implement a new and exciting Learning Management System (LMS) called myOCLearn. Since Development is one of the four key principles of Culture by Design, our new LMS is designed to provide all of us more flexibility and greater ownership of our professional development. Here are a few features of the new LMS: • There are more classes available to enroll after completion of The Passport. We will be adding classes and additional educational series’ as we continue this journey with myOCLearn. • Self-registration for training classes and county-wide events will streamline and provide a quicker registration process. • The ability to print our training history (transcript) and class certificates. • County-wide required trainings will be sent directly to employees to keep us up-to-date and knowledgeable of policies that protect us and our organization. • Supervisors will be able to easily track employee developmental course work and approve training requests. Still have questions regarding myOCLearn? A great place to start for immediate help can be found on the HR Training page under myOCLearn on the OrangeNet. Under myOCLearn, there are job aids to help navigate the LMS. If the job aids do not help answer your question please send an email to
[email protected] so we can be of assistance. Your development journey is now in your hands…welcome to our new learning evolution! Craig Lee, ADMINISTRATOR Organizational Development & Training Human Resources Division

WINTER 2017
The Trainer’s Corner
On the Move A lot of movement has been occurring behind the scenes with your training team, but more is on the way! Over the course of the next few quarters, IOC-1 is going to be under construction. Most of your training team has already relocated to the second floor of the building and many other Human Resources staff are moving around as well.
How Long Will The Passport Classes Be On the Move?
What is Happening?
Although there is a project plan for the building construction, it may take longer than expected. Besides, we may really enjoy moving throughout the County and taking The Passport on the road!
The Marco and Sanibel Training Rooms are going to become office space for the Human Resources Recruitment Team.
We Have Training Space In My Building. How Should I let You Know?
What Does This Mean for The Passport Classes?
That’s great! Drop us a note to OD.Training@ ocfl.net or let one of your facilitators know during class. We would love to come out and see your space and discuss how we can bring classes to you.
Once construction starts on the first floor at IOC-1 we will be taking some of our classes on the road. This means that classes that normally meet at IOC-1 may be taught at other locations such as Utilities, Facilities, or the Supervisor of Elections office. The Largo Training Room is remaining as is, so classes will still occur in that room as usual.
What Does This Mean for Me? Course confirmations will be very important for you to review. The Target Solutions’ course confirmations sent out before every class will contain not only the location of the training, but also directions to the location and parking instructions. Please pay close attention to these details so you do not miss your class.
Will the Classes that are Moved Still Be Open to All County Employees? Yes! One of the best things about The Passport is the opportunity to interact with other county employees in order to learn about all we have in common and solve our challenges together. Questions? Stop by and see us. Or, let’s chat after class. You can also call or send us an e-mail.

Shelter Training American Red Cross Shelter Manager Course Course Code: EM-107G Provides basic information about the activities of the Mass Care function. Learn the skills needed by Mass Care workers to deliver quality service to shelter clients. Prepares shelter managers to effectively and sensitively manage a shelter operation as a team. It also trains them to understand how to meet the needs of the people displaced as a result of a disaster. Provides participants with an opportunity to practice the knowledge and skills needed to run a successful shelter operation.
AMERICAN RED CROSS SHELTER MANAGER COURSES Orange County operates the People with Special Needs (PSN), Pet-Friendly and Employee Shelters, as well as general use shelters in partnership with the American Red Cross. Employee Shelters Orange County operates shelters for employees and their families. These shelters that are primarily designated for Orange County employees and their families are also open to the general public though not broadcasted as such. Since these are American Red Cross designated shelters, workers in these facilities must be certified. Pet-Friendly Shelters These shelters offer sheltering to individuals who desire to bring their pets along. These sites will provide shelter to both
individuals as well as their pets. Owners must remain with their pets, it is not a kenneling shelter, and be responsible for the care and maintenance of their animals. People with Special Needs (PSN) Shelters These shelters offer sheltering to individuals who have special medical needs that require nursing assistance, but not to the degree of hospitalization. Each person is highly encouraged to bring family members with them to assist in their daily care. General Population Shelters These shelters are primarily managed by the American Red Cross to provide shelter on an interim basis to all individuals, including those with functional needs, until they are able to return home, or arrange for other recovery options.
A comprehensive training program provides full American Red Cross certification. As a shelter worker, you may bring your family with you, but NO pets are allowed (Except in the pet-friendly shelters). You may be required to remain on site until there is no longer an emergency situation, or until the shelter closes, that could be as long as 72 hours. PREREQUISITES: Personnel must have completed the following courses or an equivalent to these courses: IS-1.a OR IS-230.d, IS-100, IS-200, IS-700, IS-775, IS-800 LOCATION: IOC I DOWNTOWN - MAX 40 DATE: May 31, 2018 TIME: 8:30 to 5:00
Points of Distribution (POD) Manager Course Course Code: EM-700G This program details the staffing and procedures needed to plan for, execute, and shut down POD operations. It also includes key lessons on safety, equipment, and resource accountability. As the POD Manager you are responsible for at least 12 staff, inventory control, security issues, traffic flow, documentation, and community relations. Must have a recommendation from your Division Manager. PREREQUISITES: Personnel must have completed the following courses or an equivalent to these courses: IS-1.a OR IS-230.d, IS-26, IS-100, IS-200, IS-700, IS-775, IS-800 LOCATION: Fire Rescue Headquarters, 6590 Amory Court DATE: May 11, 2018 TIME: 1:00 to 5:00pm
SKYWARN Course Code: EM-801G Central Florida weather can be unpredictable. The greatest advances in radar and weather forecasting still can’t beat experienced eyes monitoring and reporting the weather. SKYWARN is a program from the National Weather Service which teaches ways to identify hazardous weather and report it to the weather service. This course is highly recommended for county employees who work outdoors (Parks and Rec, Utilities, Animal Services, etc.) Hazardous weather information accurately reported could save the life of county employees and citizens. This course is not for storm chasing but to teach about how to identify dangerous weather and the meanings of the weather services’ different watches and warning.
PREREQUISITES: To enroll in Advanced SKYWARN you must enroll or have taken SKYWARN (Basics) previously. LOCATION: Fire Rescue Headquarters, 6590 Amory Court DATE: May 7, 2018 TIME: 10:00 to Noon (Basic) DATE: May 7, 2018 TIME: 1:30 to 3:30 (Advanced)
