Prayer Request

The Salvation Army is passionately committed to eradicating poverty and caring for people who are struggling. We are working to address the dehumanizing scourge of poverty and injustice and educate the public about what it means to live in poverty – and what they can do The Salvation Army is an international Christian organization that began its work in Canada in 1882 and has grown to become the largest non-governmental direct provider of social services in the country. The Salvation Army gives hope and support to vulnerable people today and every day in 400 communities across Canada and more than 127 countries around the world. The Salvation Army offers practical assistance for children and families, often tending to the basic necessities of life, providing shelter for homeless people and rehabilitation for people who have lost control of their lives to an addiction.

Community & Family Service Programs Offered in Fredericton Food Bank: * We are a member of Food Banks Canada Association, so we do receive food donations from the New Brunswick Food Banks Association's District 3 hub. However we still need to purchase about 80% of the food that we distribute. Our food bank is set up to be an emergency food source only - the amount of food given out would only feed a family for about 2-3 days. We assist approximately 300 households per month. Clients are normally only permitted to access this service once a month, though one-off exceptions to this may be considered depending on the circumstances. * We are ALWAYS in need of food donations. If you can help - that would be great!! Please contact Mrs. Janet Thomas on 506-453-1706. * Our Food bank is open from 9am to 12 noon and then from 12:30 to 2pm, every Monday Wednesday, and Friday. Appointments are not normally necessary.

Community Food $mart: * This is a non-income based opportunity for clients to purchase optimum quality fresh produce at wholesale prices on a monthly basis.

Clothing & Household Items vouchers: * We can provide clients with a voucher for second-hand clothing, furniture or household items.

Christmas Assistance: * Toys/Gifts - Children aged from 0 to 10 receive gifts to the value of approximately $200 each. Those aged from 11- 17 receive $50 gift card and a $15 teen pack. * Each Christmas Food Hamper is approximately $120.00 in value & around 300 of them are given out each year. * Proof of Address, Income & ID is required to access these programs. * Breakfast with Santa is an exciting event for the client families. Not only do they get a full breakfast, but they also get to hear about the true meaning of Christmas, and have their photo taken with Santa and his elf. A small stocking- stuffer type gift is also given to each attendee.

Temporary Lodging: If the city shelters are full to capacity, we may provide temporary hotel accommodation on a very short term basis. Transportation: * We only receive 10 tickets per month from the Fredericton City Transit Assistance Program which we distribute fast. However we can assist from our own resources, on a case-by case basis - as the need presents itself. * We can also assist with transportation to out-of-town destinations - especially to facilitate family reunions or in the case of medical appointments etc. Again the decision to assist is made on a case-by-case basis.

Children’s Summer Adventure Camping: * Each year we finance the cost of sending 30 children (aged 7 through 12) to Scotian Glen camp in New Glasgow, NS. Back to School Program: * We provide basic school supplies to low-income kids returning to school. A small amount of supplies may be available throughout the school year. Coats for Kids Campaign: * We collect, dry clean and distribute approximately 1000 winter coats for children and adults each year. Community Volunteer Income Tax Program: * Every Thursday through March and April, we host a team of Canada Revenue certified volunteers who electronically process income tax returns for low income households. Ladies Fitness Program: * We offer free ladies fitness classes every Tuesday & Thursday from 10am-11:15am Hair Care: * A free shampoo & hair cutting service is available on the 2nd Friday of each month (From 10am-12noon). It is supplied on a first come, first served basis - no appointments will be taken. Other Programs:* We provide work experience and an outside environment for the clients of a local home for brain-injured people. * A local farm-owner offers us the opportunity to glean in his fields at the end of his harvesting season.
