COURSE DESCRIPTION: A study of organization and administration procedures in conducting track and field competitions. The discussion and application of the physiological components, biomechanical principles, error detection/correction and training program design of track and field events. prerequisite: UWO School of Kinesiology Track and Field: Level One or permission of the instructor. COURSE OBJECTIVES 1. To experience the officiating and administrative requirements associated with the running of a track and field competition. 2. To learn the key rules of track and field competitions. 3. To examine some scientific and empirical principles and their applications to the development of specific track and field events. 4. To develop training programs for specific track and field events. COURSE TEXT Track and Field Curriculum for Physical Education by Robert Vigars (available at UWO Bookstore) COURSE CONTENT WEEK 1 Day 1 Course overview, Sprints - Review of Technique, Fault Detection and Correction Day 2 Hurdles - Review of Technique, Fault Detection and Correction Day 3 Sprints, Hurdles Drills WEEK 2 Day 1 Track Event Rules Long Jump- Review of Technique, Fault Detection and Correction Day 2 High Jump- Review of Technique, Fault Detection and Correction Day 3 Long Jump, High Jump Drills WEEK 3 Day 1 Quiz 1 - 20% (everything up to and including High Jump) Pole Vault, Triple Jump - Technique Triple Jump-Fault Detection and Correction (Quiz 2 material ends here) Day 2 Triple Jump, Pole Vault Teaching Progressions Day 3 No Class today in lieu of outside class work WEEK 4 Day 1 Quiz 2 - 20% Shot, Discus, Javelin - Technique Day 2 Field Event Rules Day 3 Middle Distance (Quiz 3 material ends here) WEEK 5 Day 1 Quiz 3 - 20% Training Program Design - General Terminology, Specific Terminology Day 2 Training Program Design - Physical, Psychological, Event Specific Training Day 3 No Class today in lieu of outside class work WEEK 6 Day 1 Training Program Design - Work on Assignment Day 2 Training Program Design - Work on Assignment Day 3 Hand in Assignments STUDENT EVALUATION: Home Meet Assignment 10% Training Assignment 30% Quizzes 60% Home Meet Assignment (10%) This is a 4 hour practical work assignment at either one of the following home meets: Date
