UBA now has presence in seven African countries, spanning West, Central and East Africa, with main operations in Nigeria and Ghana, two of the most vibrant economies of Africa. Today’s United Bank for Africa Plc (UBA) is the product of the merger of Nigeria’s third (3rd) and fifth (5th) largest banks, namely the old UBA and the erstwhile Standard Trust Bank Plc (STB) respectively, and a subsequent acquisition of the erstwhile Continental Trust Bank Limited (CTB). The union emerged as the first successful corporate combination in the history of Nigerian banking. Following Nigeria’s independence from Britain, UBA was incorporated in 1961 to take over the business of BFB. Alertpay (Now Payza)

The main currency with which your account will be domiciled is in the US dollars and for alertpay (which was later aquired and now Payza), you could withdraw to your Nigerian domiciliary account. Payza also affords you the ability to receive payments not just from account holders but also from credit card holders who may want to pay you with their credit cards. But in setting an Payza credit card platform, you would have to submit your website for verification and approval. Also it appears credit card users from Nigeria would have to verify their credit cards once for a start before they begin using it on your proposed website. One good thing about Payza is that it uses Instant Payment notification to alert you or your ipn handler that a payment has been made and you could use it to update your inventory as well as send an email (behind the scenes) to your buyer. Alertpay is now known as Payza. PROFILE Payza is the leading global online payment platform that specializes in e-commerce processing, corporate disbursements, and remittances for individuals and businesses around the world. The e-wallet platform provides Payza members worldwide with convenient and flexible loading and withdrawal options, such as localized bank transfers, global bank wires, credit/debit card, checks, prepaid cards, among others. With over 9 million members, Payza offers its services in 197 countries and in 21 different currencies. Payza is proud to provide its merchants around the globe a complete solution for accepting payments and managing their businesses. In addition, Payza offers foreign exchange services, fraud screening services, email invoicing, mass and single remittances and business management tools. Payza also provides under-serviced and emerging markets with an affordable and convenient way to receive international payments, thereby bolstering local economies in a global marketplace. WEBSITE: https://www.payza.com/ 10 Fastecash, VTN and Softpurse

These ones hold your e-currency in the naira and you can easily make payments and withdrawals by just using your bank account. It allows you to receive money from members who hold accounts with the same processor. One dynamic feature of Fastecash is that it also uses an IPN once you receive payment thus enabling you to satisfy customer’s virtual purchases using an ipn handler. We have not used Softpurse yet but it is also a growing means of online payment in Nigeria especially among recharge card online vendors. VTN can be used also for sending and receiving naira online and is also allows you to fund your Graphcard account which could be used for a lot of purposes such as a virtual credit card, US phone number, US address and so on. Receiving payment online as a Seller Now assuming you are interested in receiving payment online as a seller, you would need to have something like a store to dispaly your goods, get people to buy and filfil their orders. Well first in order to be able to receive payment online in Nigeria, you would of course need to have the following: Something to sell An online platform e.g website or vendor Payment processor Deliver orders Receiving payment online from friends and supporters While most people who receive a lot of money online do so from their buyers, we should also note that one could receive payment online too from friends and families who may want to support you in one way or the other. This may not require any serious setting up of an online platform like a website so all you may need is an email account and then hold an account with the payment receiver such as Alertpal, lr, softpures and others. You could use the platforms to request for funds from your contacts throughout the world and wherever the payment system is operational. People could send you money in minutes and when such payment comes in, you would normally get an email notification about it. One thing you should also need to do is to make sure that the notification doesn’t go into spam by adding your payment processor’s email into your addresss book. If you receive money in US dollars, you could cash the ecurrency into your bank account using bank wire or cheque and if it is naira, you could withdraw with your Savings, Current or Corporate account in Nigeria. Conclusion As more and more people in Nigeria get to use the internet, especially with the recent introduction of the Cashless or Cash Lite Policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria, chances are that there would be more ways of receiving money online and it would only encourage better service from the existing service providers. With all this features available and accessible to you, why don’t you get something started online today? With an online business, you don’t need a big store, furniture, large manpower to get online and sell your goods and services to the Nigerian and International audience. Whether you are a full time Student, full time housewife, NYSC Corper, Unemployed youth, Underemployed among others, you should think of a need you can meet, develop it and sell to the global audience of Hundreds of Millions.

ediaro.com on May 18, 2013 at 6:43 am The setting up, cost and integration process varies. For example, UBA UCollect, Simplepay, Cashenvoy are free. Hence, to decide which one to use is determined by the existing development platform, shopping cart and availability of integration plugin or document. Please check those factors before selecting the payment gateway website. We recently signed an MOU with UBA to develop simple, free ecommerce website for customers and integrate UBA UCollect free. This comes with our usual professional support service, user manual and knowledge base for all customers, hence you wouldn’t need to worry about the coding, cart and others – interestingly it’s FREE. Edikan on October 21, 2013 at 1:44 pm Hello I found your article about the various online payment systems in Nigeria and i want to commend your company for the nice research you have carried out. And i am interested in UBA UCollect. Please i will like you to tell me the procedures of integrating this online payment system into a website build with Content Management System like WordPress. And how ECommerce pages can be generated with this payment system. Are there some particular wordpress themes or pluginns that supports Nigerian payment system? Considering the fact that so many E-Commerce plugins supports only Paypal and Other Credit cards without Nigerians included. Do they generate their own E-Commerce pages like Shopping Cart and products pages as provided by some wordpress E-Commerce themes/plugins. Please i want to clarify myself about how they operate. Reply

Administrator on October 21, 2013 at 5:32 pm Hello Edikan, You can integrate UBA UCollect to wordpress and some other Content management systems – all you have to do is develop and integrate plugin that would post the transactions to the UBA UCollect payment gateway. Your website developer should be able to review and advice you on if it would conflict with the Themes or plugins you have installed on your wordpress. You have multiple options, some would cost you nothing, some little money and some would cost you greatly – depending on your products, services, hosting company and expertise of your website developer. Lola on November 3, 2013 at 10:55 am Hi, My need is actually for a platform with a more aesthetically pleasing interface. And of course, one with a good price. UBA’s Ucollect sounds good with it’s free integration option, only thing is I don’t have an account with them and the length of time it takes to open business accounts (I have 2 others now) is just a painful wait. I would like to have this integration done before the 2 week period it normally takes. I do have a GTBank account and enquired about using their payment platform but it cost N150,000 which my company cannot afford at the moment (and when the time comes that we can afford to pay that amount, I think we would rather put that money into other areas of the business than integration). Did I read clearly that you can have this integration fee waived? Please can I have some more info on this? And if possible, can you share any costs involved. Thanks, Lola. Reply

Administrator on November 11, 2013 at 9:44 am Hello Lola, We will integrate the UBA UCollect to your website free (depending on the site complexity though). You need to have a UBA Corporate account to use the UBA UCollect – because that’s where the money paid to you will be cleared into. We have sent you a more detailed email, please check and reply appropriately. Reply

The cost implication is N250,000 (Two Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira Only). Chris George on December 21, 2014 at 11:12 pm Hi, I observed that the GTPay is a good gateway. But, I observed that the gateway has payment issues, where customers are not able to make payments successfully. Also, it selects cards. Why and what would you suggest and how can you help me? Reply

ediaro.com TEAM on December 24, 2014 at 4:51 pm Hello Chris, Many issues can cause a payment gateway not to accept a card: 1. Some Bank Cards might not be activated for online transactions, 2. Card details might not be entered completely, e.g. GTBank Mastercard and some Banks write the last 4digits number on the Interswitch reflective logo which some customer don’t see. 3. Some cards require Verfied by Visa – VISA CARDS, Mastercard Secure Code – MASTERCARD and Safetoken/Hardware/Soft Token – for INTERSWTICH cards, some customers don’t know about this. Among other issues. Hence, we suggest you put simple FAQ or likely issues customers can have on your website where customers can see it when making payment. You can even make it in form of a picture with arrows pointing to the likely issues – to make them more informed. Reply

oluwafemi on January 21, 2015 at 8:43 am Good morning, I do like to know about 3D secured or OTP, most of all time I try to shop online with my Naira Debit Card, I always encounter problem doing that With OTP verification Code, before getting my OTP text message most of time I run out of time, my debit card was once blocked for that, is there a secured payment gateway that does not ask for one time password. Please advice. Reply

ediaro.com TEAM on January 21, 2015 at 11:05 am Dear Oluwafemi, most of the Nigerian payment processors use 3d secured or OTP as a second level of security for your safety. In addition, selecting payment processors is the work of the merchant selling the product/service and not for you to choose. Hence, you need to know how to register and use the OTP. What is the Interswitch Safetoken Service? This is a system that generates a 6-8 digit One-Time-Password (OTP) whenever a transaction is initiated via the Interswitch Web Payment Platform. The customer’s card would have been previously linked to his phone number for him/her to utilize this service. At the point of initiating a transaction, the customer may receive an OTP via hardware/software devices, grid cards or SMS and then he is required to input this OTP on the web payment platform in order to complete the payment. The OTP is authorized by the Strong Authentication Server residing either at the switch or at the issuing bank and the transaction is completed as required. How can I register for the Safetoken service on the ATM? To register for the service, follow the prompt Go to the nearest ATM, and insert your ATM card Input your 4-digit PINand press Enter Select your bank account type eg Savingsor Current Select the ‘Quickteller’ option from the ATM menu screen Select ‘Pay Bills’ from the Quickteller menu list on the ATM screen Select ‘Others’ for the bill payment menu option list Enter ‘322222”as the Biller Code Enter your Phone Numberas the Customer Reference Number and select ‘Proceed’ You will get a display “Do you want to make this payment?” Amount Due:N1 DO NOT edit the amount to be paid Click on “Pay amount due” You will then get a confirmation page indicating the registration was successful What do I do when I do not get an SMS with an OTP after requesting for one? Send a mail to [email protected] for assistance in making sure you get your OTP or dial a short code *322*0# to proceed to getting an OTP. For more information, visit the interswitch Safetoken faq at: https://connect.interswitchng.com/faqs/safetoken-faq/ Reply

ediaro.com on March 6, 2016 at 9:30 pm There are many payment processors that doesn’t require an SSL to receive payments online. To select another option, your choice of payment processor can be determined by many factors, among which are target audience (local or international), deployment cost, transaction charges, customer service, value added services among others. For instance if your target audience is receiving payment from Nigerian customers, we advise you go with Interswitch Webpay. Meanwhile, if you are thinking of selling to Nigerian and International audience, you can go with Stanbic IBTC Bluepay CIPG and MIGS (more description of them at Top 10 Online Payment Processing Platforms in Nigeria 2015 available at http://ediaro.com/wrd/top-10-online-payment-processing-platforms-in-nigeria-2015/ ). We can help you with a fast tracked deployment processing, technical and professional support among others FREE of charge (for our partners payment gateways). If also required, we Offer discounted and/or FREE integration on some websites – if you send us your website for us to review. Lola on March 2, 2017 at 4:17 pm Hi, Which payment gateway is best to intergrate on a wordpress e-commerce website? My business current acccount is GTB. Reply

ediaro.com on March 9, 2017 at 6:28 am Dear Lola, Unfortunately, there is no uniformly best wordpress plugin. Infact, we think you may word it as which payment gateway can you easily get it’s integration plugin for wordpress. Meanwhile, since you mentioned that you have a Business account with Guaranty Trust Bank Plc, you can consider going with GTBank GTPay. Alternatively, you can go with Interswitch webpay, you may want to checkout http://ediaro.com/wrd/top-10-online-payment-processing-platforms-in-nigeria-2015/ and http://ediaro.com/wrd/webpay/ to learn more about them respectively. If your website is powered with WordPress Woocommerce, you can order the integration plugin at http://ediaro.com/wrd/product-category/payment-integration/ . If your preffered plugin is not listed, our developers can custom develop the website for you from the beginning. Even better our developers can help you facilitate the entire setup, configuration and certifications (if necessary) with relevant stakeholders; till you begin receiving card payments on your website. This might attract a little extra, but ideal for customers who hasn’t handled a Nigerian payment gateway integration before in the past. Reply

Dele on August 28, 2017 at 3:02 am Great article. Perhaps you can be of help to me. I want to open a shopify store that will Target mostly the US market. Therefore it will receive USD payments for onward transfer to either my US bank account preferably or my USD dorm account. I see from your article that 2checkout seems to fit that bill but it seems they don’t accept Nigerians. Do you know any Shopify accepted payment gateway that can do this? Paystacks would be perfect but they only support stores that have the Naira as their currency on their store which i can’t do given my target market. Any help, info or advice you render is appreciated as I’m stuck at the moment. Reply

ediaro.com on August 28, 2017 at 5:50 am Dear Dele, Thank you for your interest in ediaro website development and digital payment services. We advise you consider asking your USA bank if they have a payment gateway and activate the account; so that you’ll integrate and get your funds settled directly to the bank account in USA. Alternatively, add your paypal/stripe account connected to your USA Card and use it to receive payment and get settled there or meet your Nigerian Bank to request if they will be willing to activate international card processing for you. Alternatively, you can google and if you find any other payment gateway in Nigeria or abroad that can meet your need, contact us via [email protected] and our webcentre developers will be willing to handle the custom integration to your Shopify account. Lastly, since you’ve almost completed the site, we presume you are aware of the limitations and co shopify has. Generally, it’s advisable you develop the site using an independent solution and host; anyway, that’s just by the way though. Reply
