Miscellaneous Quotes & Peer Review (RE: OCEAN, co-founded by Tom Verebes’ as a design research-based, network practice)

“The rise of network practices such as OCEAN, founded in London, with members scattered around the world, and the New York and Philadelphia-based Field Operations, a collaboration between architect/theorist Stan Allen and landscape architect James Corner, also reflected the need to expand research and development possibilities that have been luxuries to most firms.” Michael Speaks, (2002). “Design Intelligence and the New Economy It may look as if the landscape changed after 9/11, but features of the new economy are alive and shaping architectural practice”. Architectural Record, 1 January, 2002 Dean, University of Kentuky, Lexington Ky

“(OCEAN's) strength grows out of the weakness of conventional practice, with its emphasis on a singular, invariably style-driven approach…Much of their design research brings to their projects the dynamic relations of the organisational network.” Mohsen Mostafavi, (2000). 10 x 10 Architects. New York: Phaidon, June, 2000 Dean, Harvard University Graduate School of Design, Cambridge MA Former Chairman, Architectural Association, London

“Lynn and Kipnis, OCEAN Group, Kenji Ekuan, Zaha Hadid seem on the verge of creating a new system for organising space and, by logical extension, time as well […] their cutting-edge designs are […] efforts to bridge the divide between nature and culture.” Herbert Muschamp, (1999). “Designs for the Next Millennium”, The New York Times Magazine, May, 1999 New York Times Architectural Critic

“OCEAN's aim is to free architectural practice itself from conventional forms - to achieve a dynamic and fluid organisation from a transgressive process of interaction and communication. This international network constitutes a departure from the model of the high-profile master in charge, […] which has dominated architectural practice since the Renaissance.” Ben van Berkel & Caroline Bos, (1997). “The OCEAN net - Becoming Unlimited”, AA Files 33, 06/1997 Professor, Schtaedleschule, Franfurt, Germany Director, UN STUDIO

Quote from the cover of ‘Architect’s Journal’, on Tom Verebes, Co-Director, AA Design Research Lab, (2005-2009); Course Master (1997-2009); Post-professional MArch (Architecture & Urbanism) programme, Architectural Association School of Architecture, London

“Intense! (The tutor/course) tests the student’s ability to engage in critical thinking, also starts to engage students in areas related to scholastic issues that can prove to be invaluable in practical situations.” Extract from Student Feedback form, ARCH 5002 Thesis Design, MArch Programme, Tom Verebes’ student, 2011-2012

"Tom Verebes is a professor who not only tells, explains and demonstrates, but also inspires!" CHEUNG Chun Chi, MArch Student, ARCH5001, ARCH5002, 2010-2012

Tom was my studio and thesis tutor during my time in the MArch Program. A tutor such as Tom, with vast experience and knowledge in parametric design & architecture, had greatly helped my personal development as a student.
