Enjoy Helping at the Book Depot

Meg Sivitz and Rachel Barker in the storage room at the Book Depot

If you love books, bargains, and bounty, check out spending time at the Book Depot, 3825 North Oracle Road. We are just south of Roger and south of the Target and the Tucson Mall. Come for a short shift before lunch at local eateries or shopping. One of our members comes to help whenever her car is serviced at the Auto Mall. Computer skills are not a requirement. Some volunteers have learned how to sell on Amazon. Other helpers sort through John Grisham and Jodi Picoult books, while others may plan with us for the fall sale. Some place price stickers on children’s books or marvel at our art and literature and help stuff them into boxes. New members make new friends. Join the fun. E-mail Meg at megaron3@ msn.com or Rachel at [email protected] or phone 747-3224.

Mission Statement Brandeis National Committee Brandeis National Committee is dedicated to providing philanthropic support to Brandeis University, a distinguished liberal arts and research university founded by the American Jewish community. Its membership is connected to the university through fund-raising and through activities that reflect the values on which the university was founded: academic excellence, social justice, nonsectarianism, and service to the community.

Social Justice/ Community Service

The Tucson chapter gives back to our community. Marilyn Lobell, our Community Service Chairman, reminds us of the organizations we are supporting this year: The Emerge! Center Against Domestic Abuse is in need of hotel toiletries and personal-care items. They also need NEW socks and underwear for children, teens, and women. Youth On Their Own (YOTO) is an organization that supports high school graduation of homeless youth by providing financial assistance, basic human needs, and guidance. They always need teen hygiene products and school supplies. Sister Jose Women’s Center is a program to assist homeless women. We help by donating walking shoes and sweat clothes in good condition and women’s hygiene products. Books From Mom is a program that gives new and gently used children’s books to women in prison so they can read to their visiting offspring and give them the books. Brandeis is always looking for new ways to help our community. If you have a way to help or wish to make a donation, contact Marilyn Lobell, [email protected] or 615-0877. Nobody can help everybody, but everybody can help somebody!

Meet Your Board Member Who negotiated the hiring of Charlton Heston, Perry Como, and Bob Hope for commercials in her past life in advertising? Who served as the Business Affairs Manager of all Creative Services for the largest advertising agency in New England? (We want that person to negotiate for us!) Born and raised in the Boston area, she attended the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and Simmons College, Boston. This award-winning advertising exec morphed into a real estate mogul who landed in the top 1% of brokers nationwide and has now retired here in Tucson. She is among us as Pam Shaw, our newly elected co-VicePresident of Membership with Roni Bader-Tables. Pam had been coming to Tucson for over 16 years to Canyon Ranch to relax. On one vacation, she decided to explore the surrounding area, the Arizona Inn, the beautiful weather, the Foothills, the culture, the great Mexican food, and the Southwest flair to the community. She decided to retire here. A year and a half ago, she bought a home just down the street from Sheila Rothenberg. At a newcomer’s brunch at Shalom Tucson, Pam learned that her 30-year-old life membership in the Boston chapter of the BNC was transferable. Terri Freed, then Membership Vice-President, spoke to Pam and invited her to sit at her table for the Book & Author luncheon where she met Marilyn Sternstein, who has become a dear friend. They signed up for six Study Groups together, which proved to be a wonderful way to meet and get to know new people. They learned how to play mah jongg and canasta, all about ethnic restaurants in Tucson, the history of Jewish immigration, Arizona Jewish history, and about various local artists and their works. They had caught the Brandeis “bug.” Pam became active in the Tucson Chapter of Brandeis almost immediately. She served on the Book & Author committee, Membership Brunch group, and Study Group committee. She was elected to the board. Her favorite class was Sue Keller’s immigration course because of it rich content, fabulous videos, and themes. Study Groups proved to be a wonderful way to find new friends.

Meet Your Board Continued from page 5 In the year ahead, Pam will be one of the leaders of join us for the Ethnic Lunch Study Group (eating around Tucson) and she will also be leading the Moving On Study Group, giving members all the information they need to prepare a home for sale, including what to expect in the preparation, the actual sale process, the move, and how to price a home to sell. You can usually find Pam exercising at the JCC or the Racquet and Fitness Club. She has been divorced and single for a number of years and has family back in the Northeast. If anyone knows Pam’s future husband, please don’t hesitate to make the introduction.

Were You There? by Sheila Rothenberg There was a sea of smiling, happy faces walking out of the 2016 Book & Author Luncheon, not just because of the great meal, the fabulous silent auction, and the enticing boutique. Happy to report, it was because of the terrifically engaging talks by writers Anne Hillerman, Linda Hirshman, Steve Berry, and Sherri Duskey Rinker. As author wrangler (what my husband dubbed me), I was thrilled to hear comments like “Best one ever!” and get e-mails from attendees, such as this one from Roggie Edberg: “You have really outdone yourself! Thank you so much for all the hard work and expertise you brought to this year’s Book & Author. Not only are the authors outstanding writers, they also are superb speakers.” I haven’t been resting on my laurels, working all summer to line up equally appealing authors for our 22nd Book & Author Events scheduled for March 7 and 8, 2018. Mark those dates on your calendars and plan to be there. Authors will be announced beginning with our next Bulletin.

HELP WANTED

STUDY GROUP ORGANIZERS Are you a leader? We can use leaders for some Study Groups. You could organize a Sunday Books & Bagels group. The group decides on a monthly book and a person or couple volunteers a house. Fabulous Flix is a great Study Group. Each month, a different member or couple hosts dessert and leads a discussion on a film of their choice. The leader just makes sure each month is covered by one of the members as planned. There is no extra work for the leader. Contact Lynn Cramer, [email protected]. EAT DESSERT FIRST (EDF) FELLOWS We would like to keep EDF going, but need someone or two or three to be the organizers. This is a popular and great Study Group, so volunteer to help. Contact Steve Seltzer, [email protected].

News from Brandeis University

DNA repair. Chromosome s undergo DNA repair to c or rect insults to our genetic code, caused either by errors in copying the DNA or by external factors such as exposure to radiation or toxins. Most damage gets accurately repaired, so the cell is unaffected, but some result in permanent errors (mutations or chromosome rearrangements) that may lead to diseases, including cancer. Especially dangerous are double-strand DNA breaks that sever the chromosome. The work was principally carried out by postdoctoral fellow Ranjith Anand with contributions by technician Annette Beach and physics doctoral student Kevin Li. They examined repair of a double-strand break in yeast cells.

In the summer of 1936, German native Lisel Judge had her fencing uniform laid out and was ready to compete in the Summer Olympics in Berlin. She was 20 years old. “There was a knock at the door one day, and this Nazi said to me, ‘You don’t have to get dressed. We found out you had a father and a grandmother that were Jewish,’” Ms. Judge said in a video interview recorded last year that is posted on YouTube. Though Hitler had promised the International Olympic Committee that the regime would not use the games as a platform for its ideologies, Ms Judge was blocked from competing. By 1938, she, her husband, and their infant daughter had to flee Germany for their lives. Ms Judge started a new life in the Boston area and taught scores of young women at Brandeis University how to grip their foils, outwit opponents, and triumph like 18th-century swordsmen. Ms. Judge, who coached fencing at Brandeis for more than 25 years, leading the women’s teams to 16 New England championships, died March 23 in Boca Raton, Fla., a few days after turning 101.
