Energy Efficiency Upgrades Project Nearing Completion In August 2011, following an extensive evaluation of the District’s energy usage, the Turner Board of Education announced its decision to enter into a contract with Trane (the heating and cooling company) to initiate an energy efficiency upgrade project. As a result of the project, all of Turner’s schools were destined to enjoy improved classroom and building environments through upgraded heating and cooling systems, improved lighting, and more efficient energy management. In addition to the classroom comfort and improved learning environment that would be realized through this project, it was anticipated the district would benefit financially by way of considerable reduction of energy use. Almost immediately after the announcement, the district administration and facilities management team began coordinating with Trane staff to set the project in motion. Throughout the fall and winter months, Trane workers have addressed the many projects identified in the project scope of work—many centering around upgrading heating and cooling systems. Interestingly, two schools—Turner Elementary and Midland Trail Elementary, both of which were built as middle level schools in the mid-1960’s—needed and received extensive lighting retrofitting and ceiling modifications, all of which led to enhanced classroom environments and improved energy efficiency. This meant the classrooms in those buildings would be torn asunder as the renovations occurred. Although it was work that would have a desirable outcome, it also had the potential to be a detriment to learning during the course of the project. However, thanks to the diligence and commitment of the Trane staff, the work was done with a minimum of disruption by starting their work at the end of the school day, working through the night, and having the classroom reset by the time the students arrived the next morning. Now, at the end of January, it can be reported that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Michael Short, District Supervisor of Facilities and Grounds, reports the project is 90 to 95 percent complete. The original project plan called for completion in March, 2012, and it appears that goal will be met if not exceeded. Although there are a few connections yet to be made and comprehensive testing and building commissioning throughout the system to be accomplished, the project is nearing a close. With the completion of the extensive project, Turner’s students will be able to focus more on their learning without environmental distractions, and the district will begin to see the financial savings created by a highly efficient heating and cooling system in all of its schools, a savings estimated to be $245,000 annually.

Promoting the safety of students and staff is the top priority of the Turner School District. With the potential for severe spring weather approaching, we would like to share a new safety precaution you will notice in our schools. It has been our past practice for students to “take cover” when a local tornado siren sounds. Going forward, we will also ask all staff members to “take cover” at the same time. This will mean that the school phones and doors will not be answered as some have been in the past. School em-

THS News & Notes A Message from Turner High School Principal, Paul Colwell, Ed.S. Dear THS Family – As we end the first semester and begin to think of the upcoming second semester by bundling ourselves up with cold weather in our sights - I hope all of you have a wonderful holiday season and get some of the rest and relaxation that you so deserve. I want to take this time to remind you of a few important upcoming events as we look to the second semester. First we have Parent/Teacher conferences scheduled for Wednesday, February 16th from 5pm-8pm and Thursday, February 17thfrom 8am-8:00pm. At this time we encourage you to come visit with your student’s teachers. This year, much like what we have done in the past, we will also be conducting 2011-2012 enrollment at the same time as conferences. Please stop by the appropriate enrollment room and make sure your student is enrolled for next year – information will be available at THS. In addition to Parent/Teacher conferences and Enrollment night, the counselors have been working hard to organize a Financial Aid Night for Seniors and Juniors looking to go on to college on Wednesday, February 16th from 6pm-7pm in the auditorium. A financial aid representative from KCKCC will be in attendance to answer all of your questions.     In addition to all of the above activities, Turner High School freshman, sophomores, and juniors will begin taking the Kansas State Assessments in March and April in the subjects of Reading, Math, World History, Life Science, and Physical Science. The Kansas Assessments are given to ensure that all students are meeting the curricular expectations set by the Kansas State Board of Education (KSBE). The items on the test broadly represent the knowledge students are expected to have mastered in each subject. Before the testing weeks, please encourage your students and reinforce the importance of these assessments. The scores they earn become part of each student’s cumulative record. The scores on the assessments also play a key role in determining whether the school maintains its current level of excellence and accreditation. It is also very important that during this testing period your student should receive adequate rest and sleep as well as a balanced and nutritional breakfast prior to the school day beginning. We appreciate your help and support through the weeks of assessments and in helping and supporting to prepare your student for success. Thank you and GO BEARS!!! Paul B. Colwell, Ed.S., Principal O n c e a ye a r, t wo schools that share a history of competition collaborate on a project to support others in need. Turner High School and Bonner Springs High School “Come Together for a Cure”, the results of which benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Pink flows in abundance in the dance and cheer teams, as well as the basketball teams and their supporters. At the half time of the boys varsity basketball game, the cheer and dance squads of the two schools come together for a combined performance which precedes an educational talk to the crowd by a representative of the Foundation. This year, the “Come Together for a Cure” project raised nearly $5000 for the organization fighting breast cancer.

Lynnette Hatfield, Principal

Test Time: Is Your Child Ready? By Lynnette Hatfield, Principal As many of you are aware, we assess students in reading and mathematics in grades 3 through 8, and once in high school. Additionally, we will be assessing students in the area of science in grades 4 and 7, in history/government in grades 6 and 8, and in both science and history/ government, once in high school usually after completion of specific high school courses. The Kansas State Assessments are what Kansas uses to determine whether or not a student meets standards in the specific areas tested. It also provides teachers with one part of the picture regarding a child’s strengths and weaknesses. These results combined with other tools—such as evaluating day-to-day class work, grading homework, observing in the classroom and keeping track of how students change and grow throughout the year—are all used to measure a child’s progress and assist teachers in gaining insights into the skills, abilities and knowledge of every child. Additionally, these assessments assist parents and educators in finding out how much students have learned relative to the Kansas Academic Standards. Generally, Midland Trail students will take part in the assessments within February 21st through April 20th.

To help students prepare for the upcoming assessments and to reduce their anxiety, the following tips are offered: 4 Encourage children to take these tests seriously. However, don’t become too anxious about a child’s test score; too much emphasis on a test score can be upsetting. Additionally, test scores are not perfect measures of what a child can do. 4 Have the child get a good night’s sleep. 4 Ensure they are well-rested and have eaten a good breakfast as both are important to test-taking just as they are to other school work. 4 Have the child look quickly at the entire assessment to see what types of questions are included. This also helps children understand how to pace themselves. 4 Stress the importance of reading the directions carefully and reading each question carefully. Additionally, if the child doesn’t understand the question, he or she should ask the teacher to explain. 4 Ask the child to give their best guess instead of leaving questions unanswered. Of course, the most important thing for all students to remember is to simply do their best! By encouraging and praising them for things they do well, they will feel good about themselves and will do their best.

M i d l a n d Tra i l E l e m e nt a r y School’s spelling bee was an “old home week’s” event as the spelling bee officials were comprised of retired staff returning for a special engagement. Pictured above (from left to right) are the “pronouncer”, Judy Richards, former school secretary, and “judges” Kathy Donn, former sixth grade teacher, and Mary Jean Grindel, former teacher and instructional coach, all of whom have recently retired from the elementary school. Adding to the judging team, and lending an air of youth to the group, was Jill Glavinich [far right], who is a current instructional coach for the district.

Kiel Beckham’s fifth grade classroom at Oak Grove conducts a poetry “slam” several times each school year. During the slam, each student participates either individually or as a group member by presenting a poem to the audience, as exemplified by Miranda Ayala. Live background music is provided (notice the guitar player in the accompanying photo).

A Message from Principal Jay Douglas

Team Panthers A semester has come and gone. Before you know it, we will be back again and starting on the 2nd semester. We finished up our first semester strong, and enjoyed many activities in our building. PTA held a BINGO Night in November with the cafeteria being full. We ate tacos and played bingo, with lots of kids and parents winning prizes. This was followed up by Santa’s Work Shoppe. Students brought money to school and were able to shop for gifts for family and friends during the day. Our 2nd through 6th grade students got into the holiday spirit with a Holiday Music Concert. The concerts were very good and parents enjoyed seeing their children perform. Thank you to Ms. Merryfield, Ms. Kellerman, and Ms. Ebberts for your hard work in preparing the students for their performance. The 1st graders will have a chance to show their musical side on February 2, 2012 with a Kansas Day Program. We had another batch of students reach their first goal for Reading Counts. A party was held in Mr. Douglas’ office to reward them. Each of these students received their RC t-shirt, candy, soda, and were able to watch cartoons. Team Panthers would like to welcome Ms. Krista Wells as our new 5th grade teacher and Ms. Rebecca Dopheide to the first grade team. As we come back from winter break, we will be making our push toward state assessments. Students in grades 3-6 will be tested in Reading and Math. Our goal is for all students to meet Standard in both subjects. Students have been working hard and will continue to do so until the big days arrive. On behalf of the team at Oak Grove, I hope everyone had a great holiday season and welcome back to an energy-filled second semester.

Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA), the provider of the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessment, identified an issue that impacted the MAP for Primary Grades taken this fall. A technical issue in the latest test has caused scoring discrepancies which may impact your student’s overall RIT scores. Thus, the scores shared with you during fall parent-teacher conferences may have been inaccurate. Please note that this issue affected ONLY the test taken by students in grades kindergarten, first, and second. NWEA has corrected the problem and has re-issued accurate scores. You will notice that the Fall MAP score on the attached report may be different than what you were previously given. Please trust that the scores attached are now accurate. We apologize for this misinformation and would like you to be confident that we are working with the test provider to ensure that this issue does not arise again. Please feel free to contact your child’s teacher or school principal with any questions.

What is MAP? Curriculum, Instruction and Evaluation are the three legs of a stable, comprehensive program of teaching and learning. Curriculum refers to the content that is identified for students to be able to master, whether it is knowledge or skills-based. Instruction is the method of teaching the essential knowledge and skills contained in the adopted curriculum. Finally, Evaluation refers to the means of determining the degree to which students have attained the taught content. Evaluation of learning—commonly referred to as tests or assessments—comes in many types and sizes. Certainly, foremost in the general public’s knowledge of educational assessments are those administered through and mandated by the state department of education. These assessments, which consume much of the spring semester each year, are used both locally and by the state to determine school performance as required by the No Child Left Behind federal requirements. To some degree, these assessments are also valuable in evaluating individual student academic accomplishments. However, a stronger, more reliable measure of student-level performance can be obtained with assessments that are developed to measure specific, local curriculum content. For this purpose, the Turner School District, like many school districts throughout the state of Kansas, uses a system developed by the Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA) call Measures of Academic Progress, or MAPS. Both reading and math MAP assessments are administered to all students in grades kindergarten through ten. Each assessment is given in the fall and again in the spring, allowing educators to determine growth over the school year. Results of the MAP assessments benefit the teaching and learning process in several ways. For students, the assessment can become the basis of establishing learning goals, providing motivation for progress. For classroom teachers, the assessments provide valuable learning data on individual students, allowing them to differentiate instruction and monitor the learning process, and for the school district, the MAP assessment can be used to project potential performance on state assessments, ensuring that students enter the state testing process with maximum readiness for success. The Turner School District has an outstanding reputation for managing its curriculum and for guaranteeing that the concepts taught in every classroom are those identified and adopted through public policy procedures. Additionally, instruction practices are continuously monitored and up-dated through an effective professional development system maintained by the District. However, these two essential elements of a sophisticated teaching system would be incomplete without an effective means of evaluating student performance. The MAPS assessment system completes the cycle of teaching and learning, making the Turner educational system one which resides among the elite of Kansas educational programs.

Junction Elementary School 288-3600

Kristie Darby, Principal

A Message from Junction Elementary Principal Kristie Darby Junction has been filled with many activities and learning opportunities the past few months. We are privileged to have amazing students, supportive parents and a community that believes in us. Our students have been fortunate to experience field trips that bring learning to life and enhance understanding of objectives taught in class. Third grade recently went to the Coterie Theater in Crown Center to watch a production of Dr. Suess’s “Suessical the Musical”. Fourth grade traveled to Wyandotte County Lake, visiting the Schlagel Environmental Library. This offered them a chance to have hands on opportunities, to talk to professionals and experiment with rocks, the same objectives they were learning in class. Fourth and fifth grades were invited to see the Turner High School musical,

“Godspell.” Students came back excited about future possibilities in the Turner School District. At the beginning of December, Junction PTA held its annual Santa Shop. During this event students and parents enjoyed pancakes made from scratch and served by our Watch DOG Dads. They also were able to shop affordable gifts for loved ones and have them wrapped. Santa himself made a visit and students communicated what they wished for and took pictures with him. It was a huge success and fun was had by all! With the beginning of the new year, we look forward to many new successes. This spring we will be gearing up for state assessments. Through all of these connections between home, community, and school, we are confident our students will soar! Glenda Ruff, 4th grade teacher at Junction Elementary, has a connection to someone who has a connection to Dr. Julie Hartung, a metro-area obstetrician. Dr. Hartung, upon learning that Turner’s elementary schools want for art education, volunteered to support Ms. Ruff’s classroom with monthly art projects. Dr. Hartung, pictured above, donates not only her time once a month to conduct arts and crafts projects, but she also provides the necessary resources. Monthly projects often reflect significant events such as Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Becky Letcher, Principal

Message from Turner Early Learning Center Principal Becky Letcher Dear Parents, The third quarter is upon us and students are very busy learning. All kindergarten students have taken the MAP assessment in reading and math both for the fall and winter testing. You will receive a parent letter during conference that shows your student’s achievements on this test. Ask your child’s teacher about each of the assessments and what it means for your child’s learning. Pre-School students have been busy learning letter names and sounds with Jolly Phonics. The students are learning the actions that go with each letter. Ask your child to show you the hand actions for each letter. Pre-school students are also learning about the months of the year and the days of the week. Have your child sing the “days of the week” song. We have spent the first semester of school teaching all students about the school rules and the appropriate behavior. In the second semester of school, students who are not following the rules will receive a discipline referral. I will call home to discuss the referral and you can read the referral when it comes home in your child’s backpack. We will have our Dr. Seuss Night again this year. This year it will be Thursday, March 1st. Mark your calendars for a family event filled with fun activities for everyone. Thank you for being supportive parents and reading each night with your child. Sincerely, Becky Letcher Principal of the Turner Early Learning Center @ Muncie

Preparing to speak to the students of Turner Elementary are representatives from the Think First Foundation. Adam Lane (left) and Madi Cannon (center) travel to schools to share the story of their spinal cord injuries with the goal of informing students to “use your mind to protect your body” by practicing safe behaviors that avoid brain and/or spinal cord damage. Introducing the guest speakers is Kristen Shipp, district curriculum specialist.

Kevin Hansford, Principal

Message from Turner Elementary Principal Kevin Hansford Dear Families, It is hard to believe that the end of the first semester is here and the year is drawing to a close. It is amazing how time flies when we are learning and having fun. December has been filled with learning opportunities galore. Our third graders visited the Coterie Theater to see “Suessical the Musical”. There have been music concerts including our choir visiting Crown Center. Our students had an opportunity to visit the Secret Santa Shop to buy a gift or two for friends and family. We have also been busy finishing up MAP and DIBELs testing, and everyone is ready for a nice relaxing Winter Break. With the New Year approaching, this is a perfect time to develop or review expectations with children by setting personal and family goals. We will certainly be setting goals at school and reminding children of all the things we can do together to make our school year safe and productive. I wish you and your extended families the very best this season! Have a safe and peaceful holiday and a wonderful start to the New Year! Happy Holidays! Kevin W. Hansford

CHILD FIND: Screening and General Education Intervention Child Find in Kansas involves a screening process for children from ages 3 to 5, and a general education intervention process for children from kindergarten through age 21. Schools in conjunction with parents use these processes to locate, evaluate, and identify children who may need special education and related services. Children in need of special education services should be identified as young as possible, and also as soon as possible after the concern is noted. The earliest possible identification of education or behavioral concerns will diminish the impact of the concerns on the child’s education. If you are a resident of the Turner School District and have a child between the ages of 3 and 5 that you have concerns about their progress, you may call for an appointment. To make an appointment, call Special Services at 913-288-4182.

Battle of the Brains, Update: Turner Freshman Team Excels Note: In the last issue of The Turner, the Battle of the Brains teams from Turner were introduced. Since then, the competition has come to a conclusion, as described in the following article: The Big Bang and Beyond Team (composed of four THS freshmen) ended up among the top ten teams in the Battle of the Brains competition earlier this fall. A total of 456 teams from throughout the Kansas City metropolitan area entered the competition to design a format that would ultimately be adopted by Science City as part of an upcoming display. As a result of the finalist status of the Big Bang and Beyond Team, Turner High School was awarded a $2500 STEM grant to be used to enhance its programs related

to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. The two THS teams were sponsored by science teachers Roger Finkmeieir and Jennifer ThomasZwick. Of the Battle of the Brains program, Ms. ThomasZwick said, “Battle of the Brains” has been a great experience for our teams. They have learned to apply their knowledge, creativity, and talents to a real-life situation while navigating the ups and downs of working on a team. I think activities like this should be mandatory for all students!”

Thirteen Turner High School Athletes are Recognized by the Kaw Valley League

Proudly displaying her championship trophy is 2012 Wyandotte County Spelling Bee Champion Sabria Zlitni (center). She is flanked by Jalah Danks (3rd place) [far left] and Runner-Up Diego Acosta [right].

Oak Grove 6th Grader, Diego Acosta, is WYCO Spelling Bee Runner-Up “P-r-a-l-i-n-e, praline.” Thus, with the correct spelling of the chewy nougat candy, Sabria Zlitni, a seventh grade student at Robert E. Clark Middle School in Bonner Springs (USD 204), was named the Wyandotte County Spelling Bee Champion for 2012. As county spelling bee winner, Zlitni becomes qualified to represent Wyandotte County in the Sunflower Spelling Bee, a 66-county regional bee hosted by the Great Bend Tribune, held in Great Bend, Kansas, on March 17, 2012. The winner of the regional bee will be qualified to attend the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., this coming June. Zlitni was followed in the ascension of elite county spellers by runner-up Diego Acosta, a sixth grade student at Oak Grove Elementary school in the Turner school district (USD 202). Third place speller was Jalah Danks who is a fifth grader at Hazel Grove Elementary School in USD 500.

Immunization Requirements It is never too early to be aware of the necessary immunization requirements for entry into school. We have included the list of vaccines needed at each grade level [see accompanying chart]. It is important parents start now to address immunization requirements, so their child will be ready to start school on the first day. Information essential for parents planning to enroll their child in the Turner School District during the 2012-13 school year are: 4 Proof of receiving the immunizations must be provided to the school prior to attending the first day of school. 4 No student entering school for the first time will be allowed to attend any class without presenting evidence of immunizations as provided in KSA 72-5209. 4 Students transferring to the school district from another school district may be allowed to enroll and attend classes; however, record of evidence of immunizations must be received within six weeks of the student’s enrollment date. 4 Our PK and K students will need a school entry physical completed by a Kansas physician within 12 months prior to the first day of school. 4 New students under the age of 9 years who are now attending a Kansas school for the first time, also require a school physical by a Kansas physician. 4 The physical must be provided to the school prior to attending.

At the conclusion of the fall season of high school sports, the Kaw Valley League identified its most outstanding athletes by awarding them all-league honors. Thirteen of those awards were directed to Turner High School athletes. Receiving honors for football were Nick Rodriquez, a senior, who was placed on the KVL all-league first team as both placekicker and punter and was placed on the second team as linebacker. Sam Worthy, a junior, was also placed on the all-league first team in the position of linebacker. Receiving positions on the all-league second team for football was Drake Leger whose position was defensive lineman. Tyler Kruskamp, a senior, received honorable

mention honors for his position of defensive lineman. Six athletes received allleague honors in soccer. Being placed on the all-league first team were Gustavo Ruiz, 12th grade, (midfielder); Oscar Acuna, 12th grade, (defense); and Austin Eagles, 12th grade, (utility). One soccer athlete, Kelvin Ibarra (10th grade) was assigned to the all-league second team in his position of forward, while Gabe Moran (11 th grade) and Tyler West (12 th grade) were awarded honorable mention status in their positions of midfielder and defense, respectively. School Entry Physicals

Varicella (chickenpox) vaccine is not required if child has had chickenpox disease and disease is documented by a physician signature. Without physician signature, vaccine is required even if you believe your child has had chickenpox disease. ** Although 1 dose of varicella is required for school attendance, 2 doses are recommended by the ACIP (Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices). *** All 7th - 9th graders are required to have one dose of Tdap regardless of the interval since the last dose of Td (tetanus/ diptheria). This is to improve pertussis (whooping cough) immunity due to increasing outbreaks. **** All 10th - 12th graders are required to have one dose of Tdap if more than 10 years since previous DTaP (pertussis containing vaccine). This is to improve pertussis (whooping cough) immunity due to increasing outbreaks.
