Supportfor FacultySearchAmbassador Program

Recommendation

The Committeeenthusiastically recommends continuedfundingfor the UCSFFacultySearch Ambassador Program. We believethatDr. Brody's time andthat of his assistant, Ms. Badgettis essentialto enablethe momentumhe hasgeneratedto continueanddevelopto its greatest potential. Summary In April 2004,the Faculty AmbassadorProgrambeganwith the goal of removingthe ba:riersto diversityof the facultyat UCSF.TheAcademicSenateCommitteeon EqualOpportunity (EQOP)had initiated the idea and garneredthe supportof the AcademicSenateso that it was successfullyfundedthroughthe office of the Vice Chancellorfor AcademicAffairs. We are mostgratefulfor the supportof the Vice Chancellorfor AcademicAffairs. Dr. HarveyBrody wasselectedfrom amongsta pool of highly qualifiedcandidates andhasservedasthe Ambassador Program(AP) Directorsincethattime. SederiaBadgetthasservedin therole of ProgramAnalyst. The Committeeon Equal Opportunityhasreviewedthe AmbassadorProgram ProgressReportdatedJune30, 2005.On behalfof the entireCommittee,we arewriting to expressour strongestenthusiastic supportof the accomplishments of Dr. Brody andMs. Badgett during this first year, andwe urge continuedfunding of this landmarkprogram, which has potentialto stimulateeffortsin diversitywell beyondits notableinitial successos. Dr. Brodyhasfulfilled the main setof tasksasoriginally specifiedin thejob description-- to provideSearchCommitteechairsandmemberswith resources to expandtheir searchto increase the numberof qualified diverseapplicantsandto work directly with chairsandmembersto assist themin this effort. He established a systemfor doingthis, andwith Ms. Badgett'sassistance, hasdocumented the results.

In additionto this effort asoriginally envisionedby the EQOP,Dr. Brody hasbeenparticularly creativeandirurovativein thinkingaboutwaysto expandthe diversityof the applicantpools. As in this report,Dr. Brody hasaccomplished an extraordinaryamountdwing this brief summarized start-upperiod. His commitmenthasled him to try out severalinnovativeideas. For example, he traveledto onenationalmeetingandidentifiedseveralpossiblecandidates for a particular search;this approachhasbeensummarized in thereportassomethingthat couldbe doneby UCSFfaculty(FAST). During the earlymonths,Dr. Brody attemptedto understandthe many determinantsof enhanced faculty diversity, going well beyondthe role of the searchcommittee. He met with numerous individuals aroundcarnpusto learnof their views on diversity, and acquaintedhimself with other effortstowarddiversitysuchasthe variousTaskForcesandCommittees. As a permanent "guesto'member of EQOP,he sharedhis ideaswith the Committee, which led to EQOP attemptingto identify the scopeof efforts acrosscampustoward enhancingfaculty diversity. Many of his originalideasaresummarized in thereport. He hasalsobeenableto bring people togetherwho areworking on this issueoandfacilitatethe development of severalnew efforts. He hasbecomea regularor guestmemberof severalcampuscommittees, andhasthusspreadthe message thatUCSFis concernedandhasactedon behalfof enhanced diversity. He hasalso beenUCSF'sambassador, alongwith FrancisLu, MD, to the CalifomiaUniversityPipeline Project,a consortiumof Califomiauniversitiesworking on increasingdiversity. Dr. Brody's work hasbeeninvaluableto the largercampuseffort to enhancediversity. At the sametime, he will be an importantresourcefor diversityeffortswithin the office of the Vice Chancellor. He hassetin motionmanyothereffortsto achievethe samegoal, andis currentlyin the middleof severalof theseprocesses. At this criticaljuncturefor UCSFin its effortsto welcomediversity, thework of Dr. Brody is of tremendous value. He broughtto this progr:lma greatdealof energyandcreativity.

Faculty AmbassadorProgram

FROM:

SallyH. Rankin,PhD, Chair,SearchCommitteefor Departmentof PhysiologicalNursingChairperson

I would like to offer an assessment of the FacultyAmbassadorProgram andcomment particularly on the role that Dr. Harvey Brody hasplayedasthe faculty ambassador during the currentacademicyear.Dr. Brody was invited to join a searchfor the chair of the Departmentof PhysiologicalNursingin fall, 2004.Althoughthepositionwasto be filled from within it wasnot an easysearch. Dr. Brody met with me beforethe first searchcommitteemeetingto help me think throughtheprocessandto makesuggestions regardingthe committee'seffortsto enlarge thepool so that asmanydiverseapplicantsaspossiblewould apply.I continuedto meet with him informally andto seekout his counselrelatedto the bestmethodof handling someratherdifficult situations. His advicewas alwaysvery helpful andvery sound. Dr. Brody attendedthe candidates'presentations to the facultyaswell asparticipatingin all of the searchcommitteemeetings. He wasperspicacious in gatheringdatafrom each candidaterelatedto their approachto achievinga more diversefaculty and staffwithin the Departmentof PhysiologicalNursing.I wasimpressedby his ability to draw the candidates out throughprobingquestions. We had two very stronginside candidatesand in the endthe searchcommiffeechosethe strongestof the two candidateswho alsohappensto be representativeof an underrepresented ethnicallydiversegoup at UCSF.Dr. Brody's assistance to me asa firsttime chairof a searchcommitteeof this staturewasexceedinglyhelpful. The fact thatwe accomplished this searchin a relativelysmoothfashion, eventhouglrtherewas dissensionin the departmentfor whom we weresearching, waspartially a testamentto the assistance he gavethe searchcommittee.I would hopethat thepositionof Faculty Ambassador would continueto be fundedandwould be widely usedat UCSFto enhance all searchprocesses.
