Preface English for Junior Form Students is a series of English exercises tailor-made for Form 1 to Form 3 students. The exercises include proofreading, open cloze passages, MC cloze passages and reading comprehensions. While the first three are for foundation building, the reading comprehensions (similar in format to the new HKDSE English Language sample paper) aim to familiarise students with the new question style at an earlier stage. By completing these exercises, students will be better prepared for future challenges when they move into senior forms (F4-F6). Solutions with detailed explanations are included in the books. Students are advised to go through those explanations after checking the answers. This will further consolidate their understanding of the rules of English grammar and usage. Any comments and suggestions on the book, which are seen as a catalyst for further improvement, are always welcome. YY Lo

READING COMPREHENSION – GOVERNMENT FLYING SERVICES
A. Comprehension Read the following passage about some of the aircrafts used by the Government Flying Service and complete the exercise below. The Jetstream 41 (J-41) aircraft mainly performs tasks such as initial search and rescue for all long range and off-shore operations. It will be the first to arrive at the scene and act as on-scene commander. This aircraft has advanced equipment installed on board, such as a 360-degree search radar, and has the ability to fly at high altitudes and over long distances. They are the ideal aircraft to perform regular patrols for detecting drug trafficking, illegal immigrants, smuggling and environmental pollution. The Super Puma L2 helicopters contain a spacious cabin which can carry up to 6 stretchers for transferring the injured. They are equipped with new onboard medical equipment which would allow for the immediate preliminary treatment of patient. They can also be fitted with a ‘belly tank’ to perform water-bombing in combating country park fires. The EC155 B1 helicopters are used primarily for aero-medical services in response to emergency callouts from government clinics throughout the territory and can be deployed directly to the scene of accidents. They also provide a 'Support Flying' service for all government departments in respect of VIP tours of Hong Kong, photography of construction projects and transportation of personnel.

(para. 1, line [4-5]) “It will be the first to arrive at the scene and act as on-scene commander.” A commander gives out orders about an operation. (para. 2, line [6-7]) “… fitted with a ‘belly tank’ to perform water-bombing in combating country park fires.” (para. 1, line [2-3]) “… initial search and rescue …” and (para. 1, line [7]) “360-degree search radar” mean that it can locate missing people with the radar it has. (para. 1, line [7-8]) “…has the ability to fly at high altitudes and over long distances” means that it can fly high up in the sky and go to places far away. (para. 1, line [9]) “… detecting … smuggling …” only means that they can find out if smuggling activities are going on. They cannot stop and catch the smugglers. (para. 3, line [8-9]) “photography of construction projects” It has the ability to take photos of buildings. For A, “far away from Hong Kong” means we need to fly long distances, and Jetstream 41 should be used. For B, there are four people and are seriously injured, so we need Super Puma L2 for its big cabin and the medical equipment onboard. For D, none of the passages says the aircraft can raise a banner up in the air, and none says they will work on private orders. There is no mention of frequency of use in any of these paragraphs.
