Changing Lives, One Student at a Time

Fiscal Year 2015 (July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2015)

Your Gifts Make the Difference On behalf of the Board of Trustees, President William R. Duffy, and the faculty and staff of Upper Iowa University, we are pleased to share with you the University’s first-ever Annual Donor Report. Philanthropy has played a significant role in UIU’s history since its earliest days, when in 1854 Robert Alexander donated $10,000 and Samuel Robertson donated $5,000 and 10 acres of land to assist Elizabeth Alexander in realizing her dream of starting a college in Fayette. The generosity of UIU’s alumni and friends persists to this day, with over $3.1 million received during Fiscal Year 2015 to support our University’s mission and to fulfill the educational goals of our students. This Donor Report is meant to demonstrate accountability to those who support UIU with their charitable giving. According to the National Center for Charitable Statistics, there are currently over 1.5 million nonprofit organizations registered in the United States. We realize you have a wide array of options when considering which organizations and causes to support. We hope this report will prove to you that your gift is not only greatly appreciated and well stewarded by our University, but is also making a profound difference in the lives of Upper Iowa’s students and alumni. As you flip through this publication, you will find information on current fundraising priorities, metrics used to measure fundraising success, the source of donations and how funds received are distributed across the University, and stories highlighting the positive impact gifts have on UIU students. The report recognizes those who supported UIU in 2015 with donations both large and small by highlighting class giving and our newly created Donor Clubs. Future annual donor reports will also provide information on the University’s endowment and investment performance. It is by communicating with you, our treasured donors, that we believe UIU can cultivate and expand upon our long-held culture of giving. While proud of our fundraising achievements thus far, we know that as a University we can do better. Overall donor participation by UIU alumni is less than 4 percent, with alumni from the Fayette campus participating at just under 10 percent. These numbers are slightly lower than benchmark institutions and an area in which we need to improve. It is our hope that this report and other communication with our alumni and friends will assist in this effort. Again, thank you for your ongoing support of Upper Iowa University. We hope you find this report informative. Should you have any questions or comments about the data, please contact the Office of Institutional Advancement and Alumni Development using the information included on the back cover of the report. Finally, we would like to acknowledge those who helped make this report possible, including staff members of Institutional Advancement and Alumni Development and the Office of Communications and Marketing, with special thanks to Charles Alcaide, Allyssa Joseph, Beth Petsche, Mike Van Sickle and Kimberlea Baker.

Board of Trustees For more than 150 years, Upper Iowa University (UIU) has benefited from the devotion, service and contributions of thousands of alumni and friends. From this broad constituency, a relative handful of individuals have been asked to assume the special responsibility and honor of serving as trustees. The performance of those invited to serve in this capacity is directly related to the continued vitality and strength of Upper Iowa University. Members of the UIU Board of Trustees serve as ultimate fiduciaries in their oversight of institutional affairs in accordance with the university’s charter, bylaws, evolving statements of mission and purpose, and institutional plans. In serving in this critical capacity collectively as a governing board, the trustees hereby clarify for themselves and for those invited to join them what is expected of individual members. All individual trustees are expected to have a deep and abiding commitment to Upper Iowa University’s values and traditions as an exceptional liberal arts institution. In their words and deeds, trustees should dedicate themselves to upholding and strengthening the university’s tradition of providing a high-quality liberal arts education to its students at a level of excellence commensurate with its growing reputation as one of the finest liberal arts universities in the country.

Board of Trustees Demographic Chart Upper Iowa University is a multifaceted institution that serves students of all nationalities and learning experiences. It is very important that the highest governing entity of UIU is as diverse as our student body and alumni population. Below you can see the Board of Trustees demographics by learning experience (for Board members that are alumni) and relationship to Upper Iowa University (for Board members that are not alumni). We hope that you will appreciate the talent and diversity that governs Upper Iowa University.

Current Fundraising Priorities While the support for Upper Iowa University and its mission to provide quality student-centered educational programs across multiple platforms is overwhelming, many opportunities remain to help strengthen and ensure the continued growth of the University well into the future. Among the current priorities are the following fundraising efforts: Deans’ Funds — Betty’s Team Fund (supporting the Andres School of Education), Cabby Dean’s Fund (supporting the Office of Student Development), Churbuck Dean’s Fund (supporting the School of Science and Mathematics) School of Business Dean’s Fund and School of Liberal Arts Dean’s Fund each help assure the continued support and development of students and faculty in their respective fields of study.

UIU in 3D — Edgar Hall needs additional student workspace to better support the art major, especially those courses focused on 3D arts such as sculpture and ceramics. Fundraising efforts are under way to create a freestanding art studio to house UIU ceramics and sculpture courses. The project will expand UIU’s long history of serving students by further developing their skills in the fine arts.

Military and Veterans Service Center — Currently planned for a location in Garbee Hall, the Center will provide a relaxing physical space for veterans and military-affiliated students to study and connect with other students. Assistance will also be available to students who need help navigating the University’s resources. A virtual MVSC will also exist on the UIU website to provide resources for military and veteran students not physically located on the Fayette campus.

University Archives and Foster Cass Archives Walk — The wide array of documents, collections and memoirs on display on the UIU campus date back to the University’s founders, Robert and Elizabeth Alexander. The recent establishment of the University Archives and Foster Cass Archives Walk helps ensure the preservation and proper display of current artifacts and any items to be donated in the future. Among the immediate goals is to install and implement an archival management software program at UIU. Meanwhile, a long- range conservation plan of the University’s historical archives includes a parallel focus on funding strategies, including writing grants for specific projects. Annual Fund — Such gifts are unrestricted and fund universitywide enhancements by adding flexibility to the overall operating budget. Scholarships — Scholarships can be restricted to students meeting donor-specified criteria or can be dedicated to general merit and need-based scholarships awarded at UIU. Both restricted and unrestricted scholarships help UIU students achieve their academic goals.

Raising the Bar — This initiative is needed to complete financing of the recent overhaul, expansion and improvement of the Peacock Strength and Conditioning Facilities in Dorman Gymnasium.

To learn more about these and other fundraising opportunities, please visit givetouiu.org.

Carver Trust Grant Benefits Education and Research Upper Iowa University faculty and students have begun to apply the latest state-of-the-art tools to their cell and molecular biology labs. From a specialized incubator and centrifuge that can be used to culture and experiment with living cells to a fluorescent microscope that reveals subcellular structures and functions, these and similar educational experiences would not have been attainable without a recent $100,000 grant from the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust. Created through the will of Roy J. Carver, a Muscatine industrialist and philanthropist who died in 1981, the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust is one of the largest private philanthropic foundations in Iowa. The Foundation typically supports biomedical and scientific research, scholarships and programs addressing the educational and recreational needs of youth in Iowa and Illinois. Since the beginning of its grant-making activities in 1987, the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust has distributed more than $283 million in the form of over 1,900 individual grants. Drs. Rebecca Schmidt and William Jones, assistant professors of biology, submitted a letter of intent to apply for the grant in October 2014 and a month later were invited to complete the full grant submission. The faculty members were rewarded for their efforts when notified in January 2015 that they were the recipient of the $100,000 award; they received the funding in May. “My initial thoughts were with our students and how this was going to make such a difference in their education. It was going to open up so many new opportunities for them,” said Schmidt. “I was ecstatic, but there was some disbelief at the same time,” added Jones. “This is truly a benefit to both the faculty and students in that it provides an entirely different package of curriculum and research we can offer here at UIU.” “It allows each of us (students and faculty) to continue pursuing, exploring and investigating our own research,” Schmidt agreed. “While I’m most excited to mentor our students, I’m also happy that the new equipment allows our faculty members to remain up to date in their respective fields. To have these additional tools to help us answer questions when conducting research is really satisfying.” The new equipment purchased using the grant will benefit both educational opportunities and research projects involving multiple disciplines, including cellular and molecular biology, plant physiology, biochemistry and microbiology, and it will also impact teaching students DNA-based and protein-based techniques. From these expanded studies, both Schmidt and Jones noted the students will gain hands-on knowledge and experiences that will better prepare them for careers in health sciences, agribusiness, biotechnology, etc. “This can only expand the resources available to them in conducting their senior Capstone research projects,” added Schmidt. “The more experiences the students are exposed to, raises their awareness and allows them to distinguish themselves from other students in their chosen career field.”

Drs. Scott Figdore, William Jones and Rebecca Schmidt (l-r) are pictured alongside a biological safety cabinet, which is one of the latest tools now available for use in the University’s cell and molecular biology labs. This and other state-of-the-art equipment was purchased with a recent $100,000 grant from the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust. Jones and Schmidt, UIU assistant professors of biology, completed the grant application. Figdore, dean of the School of Science and Mathematics, believes the new teaching labs will result in attracting more students and building an even stronger STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) program at UIU. Schmidt and Jones said the capabilities of the lab will enrich a variety of UIU majors, especially ongoing partnerships in health and lab sciences such as those with the Mayo Clinic, Palmer Chiropractic College and Northwestern Health Sciences University. “Both Rebecca and Will are to be commended for their efforts in securing this grant,” said Dr. Scott Figdore, dean of the School of Science and Mathematics. “The new teaching labs will result in attracting more students and building an even stronger STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) program here at Upper Iowa.” While a large number of UIU faculty and students have and will continue to benefit from the recent Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust grant, donors may further help the UIU School of Science and Mathematics by donating to the Churbuck Dean’s Fund. Professor Lew Churbuck ’67 returned to UIU as an associate biology professor from 1970-2007 when he retired. His initiatives led to advances in the science department and included establishment of the conservation management major. Named “professor emeritus” upon his retirement, Churbuck died in 2014. Donors may contribute any amount to the fund, and may receive public recognition at a variety of levels: • Churbuck Dean’s Fund – Champions: $50,000 • Churbuck Dean’s Fund – Leaders: $25,000 • Churbuck Dean’s Fund – Officers: $10,000 • Churbuck Dean’s Fund – Mentors: $2,500 • Churbuck Dean’s Fund – Facilitators: $1,000 • Churbuck Dean’s Fund – Helpers: $100

Cabby’s Legacy Continues to Serve UIU Students Over the years, Braulic “Cabby” Caballero served many roles at Upper Iowa. From first stepping on the Fayette campus as a freshman in the fall of 1952 to working eight positions during his 40-plus years of service to the University, the Oelwein native was among the closest friends of UIU. As a student, Caballero was nominated to Who’s Who Among Students in Colleges and Universities and played football for UIU along with twin brother Rupert. A running back, defensive back and kicker on the football team, Cabby’s career highlights included scoring on a four-yard run and kicking both PATs in a 14-13 Homecoming victory over Buena Vista in 1953. During the 2015 UIU Athletic Hall of Fame ceremonies, Cabby received special recognition posthumously for all of his accomplishments. Cabby graduated cum laude from Upper Iowa in 1956 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and with a minor in political science. He later attended the University of Iowa, where he earned a master’s degree in counseling and guidance in 1963. UIU first hired Cabby as an admissions counselor in 1956, before elevating him to director of admissions in 1959. During this sixyear tenure, he was also asked to take over responsibilities in the public relations office. University officials then named Caballero an assistant registrar and, in 1965, he assumed the role of dean of students. Fifteen years later, while retaining his other duties in the office of student services, Cabby took on the responsibilities of the director of the physical plant. In 1984, he was named vice president of student services. Although he retired from UIU on June 30, 1995, he returned to work five days later after accepting his alma mater’s request to serve in the areas of development and alumni affairs on a parttime basis. As assistant alumni director, he focused on improving communications with alumni and retaining better alumni records. Shortly after accepting the position, Cabby is quoted as saying, “It is important, interesting work. We need to stay in touch with our alumni. In order to provide a quality education, we must be on the cutting edge; we must make sure [students] needs are met.”

In 2003, Cabby received the UIU Alumni Award for Outstanding Service to the University and was listed as one of the Top 10 UIU Alumni during the University’s 150th anniversary celebration. He Braulic “Cabby” Caballero at the 2014 President’s Ball. also served on the UIU Alumni Association Board. The “Cabby Award” is presented annually to a student active in residence life. Prior to Cabby’s death in June 2015, the Office of Student Development created the “Cabby” Dean’s Fund in his honor to support enhancing career development and leadership opportunities for students; improving retention, persistence and graduation rates; enhancing student engagement; fostering integration of campus students and non-campus students and enhancing student learning outside of the classroom. Donors may contribute any amount to the Cabby Fund, and may receive public recognition at the following levels: • Cabby Dean of Students Fund – Champions: $50,000 • Cabby Dean of Students Fund – Leaders: $25,000 • Cabby Dean of Students Fund – Officers: $10,000 • Cabby Dean of Students Fund – Mentors: $2,500 • Cabby Dean of Students Fund – Facilitators: $1,000 • Cabby Dean of Students Fund – Helpers: $100 For additional information about the “Cabby” Dean’s Fund, contact the Office of Institutional Advancement & Alumni Development.

Cabby’s busy schedule also included serving as a member of the Iowa Student Personnel Association and Phi Delta Kappa (national education fraternity), and past president of the Iowa Association of College Admission Counselors. He was a member/former president of the Fayette Lions Club and the Big Rock Country Club. He served on the North Fayette School Board and Fayette City Council. While on the council, he served on the Downtown Master Plan Committee. A veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, Cabby worked with local Boy Scouts and was active in St. Francis Catholic Church.

This Is Peacock Nation! The Office of Institutional Advancement & Alumni Development enjoyed a wonderful year of re-connecting with alumni and friends of Peacock Nation. Representatives from the UIU alumni team traveled to more than 10 states in the United States and three other countries to host events that foster support, growth and fellowship between alumni and their alma mater. As a result of connections made at events throughout the year, we are pleased to report that UIU has established three alumni chapters: Tri-State

Alumni Chapter (Pennsylvania, Virginia and Maryland), UIU Malaysia Alumni Chapter and the UIU Florida Chapter. We want to thank our chapter members as well as the many alumni that attended local networking events over this past year. If you have not attended an alumni event, we invite you to view our alumni calendar of events below to see where UIU will be next. Below are pictures from alumni events held in different states. Phonathon — Will You Answer the Call?

The Upper Iowa University Annual Fund includes thousands of generous alumni, friends, parents, faculty and staff of the institution. Today’s students benefit from the support of alumni and friends who help provide them with opportunities through gifts to the Annual Fund. Such gifts are unrestricted and fund universitywide enhancements by adding flexibility to the overall operating budget. Your annual donation supports opportunities that are critical to students’ learning experience. In fiscal year 2015, generous UIU contributors gave over $375,000 in unrestricted gifts to UIU. We thank all our annual donors who are helping UIU bridge the gap between tuition and the overall cost of a student experience. In 2016, our goal is to raise over $400,000 in unrestricted giving to Upper Iowa University. The Upper Iowa University Annual Fund is also home to the phonathon calling team. There are 29 student callers making calls to alumni and friends throughout this campaign. This special team of students gets on the phones, 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, to make meaningful connections with alumni, update contact information and raise money for the Upper Iowa University Annual Fund. Below you can view the graph showing how much progress we have made. Thank you for your support! Spring Campaign Calling Dates: Feb. 1-March 21, 2016 Give a gift online today at

Betty Andres Provided Lessons in Giving Betty (Follett) Andres ’46 was a proud and faithful alumna, UIU Board of Trustee, and devoted wife, mother, teacher and friend to the University and surrounding communities. She was passionate in all that she did, from teaching and gardening to exhibiting her continuous support of art, education and the future of UIU. As an Upper Iowa student, the Clermont, Iowa, native served as a South Hall Council proctor and was active in band, choir and drama. Prior to graduating with an elementary education degree, she student-taught in Fayette and even filled in as a teacher in grades five and six in nearby Randalia when some teachers there became ill with the mumps. Betty served as a member of the UIU Board of Trustees for nearly 20 years, including 13 years as vice chair. Beginning in the ’90s, she and her husband, Bill, were at the forefront of revitalizing the Fayette campus. Betty was personally involved in the design and development of the campus master landscaping plan, regularly studying and meeting with artists before selecting the 13 original sculptures that enhance the campus grounds today. The Andres’ vision and benevolence led to the construction of Grace Meyer Square, a football stadium and a women’s softball complex. Of course, among her crowning achievements, Betty envisioned and spearheaded the completion of the Andres Center for Business and Education. With the help of fellow board member, the late Jerry McCauley ’61, and working alongside then-executive director of operations Ron Crooker, the former educator thoroughly researched the elements that would need to be included in the state-of-the art facility, which was constructed in 2005. The University names its School of Education after the family, calling it the Andres School of Education. After the death of Bill Andres in February 2000, the William & Betty Andres Foundation continued to support the well-being of the Fayette community. A nonprofit charitable organization, the Andres Foundation helped numerous local causes through gifts, grants and loans through the years. The Foundation contributed to the 18-hole expansion project at Big Rock in Fayette and the Clermont Fire Station construction project, and provided funding for future Peacocks at Rainbow Land Day Care and Preschool in Fayette.

Prior to her death in August 2015, Betty contributed nearly $4 million to Upper Iowa University, including funds to the Andres Center for Business and Education, capital campaign general fund, the landscape project, and various other projects and scholarships. As a tribute to Betty, the Andres School of Education Dean’s Fund has undertaken several initiatives that enhance career preparation for students and faculty development, including raising funds to help offset fees for state-required testing for teacher education certification and supporting participation in professional conferences or similar opportunities. Meanwhile, donating to the Betty’s Team Fund can help support professional development for faculty and/or internships and on-the-job experiences for students. Formerly known as the Andres School of Education Dean’s Fund, Betty’s Team Fund provides monies for several initiatives that enhance career preparation for students and faculty development. For example, it raises funds to help offset state-required testing for teacher education certification. Funding could also support participation in professional conferences and travel to learning opportunities. Donors may contribute any amount to the fund. For information, contact the Office of Institutional Advancement & Alumni Development at 563-425-5388 or [email protected].

In February 2009, Betty was named trustee emerita and during that same year was presented with the Service to University Award at the Homecoming Alumni Banquet. A year later, she was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters, which she received during 2011 commencement ceremonies. Throughout her life, Betty encouraged her children and grandchildren to be involved with UIU. Among those carrying on her commitment to the University is her son Richard, who currently serves as secretary of the UIU Board of Trustees; daughter-in-law Chris, who served most recently on the President’s House Restoration committee and President’s Ball committee; granddaughter Stephanie (Andres) Duffy, who rides with Team 15

Endowed Scholarships at UIU Endowing a scholarship at UIU means a donor can not only make a secure investment that multiplies but also have the opportunity to leave their legacy for future generations of peacocks. You can establish an endowed scholarship at Upper Iowa University with an initial gift of $25,000. UIU carefully invests in and awards each endowment with the full intent that it will be received by a student who meets the agreed-upon criteria for the scholarship. The William Prochaska Endowed Scholarship is one example of how Upper Iowa University’s endowments impact the lives of UIU students every day. The award is presented annually to a student entering his/her junior year, who is majoring in Coach Bill Prochaska and Matthew Vagts at the Honor and Awards Banquet. physical education and coaching. The student must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher. The scholarship can be used toward the student’s junior year expenses at UIU. Prochaska (Coach Pro) and his family created the scholarship to honor his 50-year affiliation with UIU as an alum, coach, athletic director and faculty member. “I hope to see this endowment continue to grow so even more students can be helped to further their education,” said Coach Pro. For more information on endowing a scholarship, please contact the executive director of Institutional Advancement & Alumni Development, Josem Diaz, at [email protected]. International Scholarship Contributes to Student’s Global Experiences Outside of the traditional classroom, Pinima recently participated in the Atlantis Project Summer Internship program. The Atlantis Project gives students from around the world an opportunity to experience European culture and health care programs, providing internships in public hospitals. As part of the program, Pinima job-shadowed physicians in eight different medical specialties at Hospital Universitario in A Coruna, Spain. During the three-week period, she witnessed a thodothyroidectomy (a left neck dissection) to remove a thyroid tumor, plastic surgery, an upper and lower endoscopy, an autopsy and a number of other procedures. In return, she taught English to members of the hospital staff. The experience provided Pinima an opportunity to utilize the knowledge she has obtained from UIU, while also providing an inside glimpse of the field of medicine. Pinima Godpower presented her summer internship poster at the School of Science and Mathematics Student Research Project Showcase during Homecoming 2015. In two short years, Upper Iowa University student Pinima Godpower has accumulated a lifetime of educational experiences in and out of the classroom. Born and raised in Rivers State, Nigeria, Pinima watched six older siblings graduate from universities in her native country. Shortly after learning about UIU and its International Diversity Scholarship, Pinima became the first member of her family to study abroad. Now a UIU junior, Pinima explained that while the Rivers State government offers scholarships to approximately 300 academically gifted students from the state to study abroad annually, Nigeria does not typically send students to study in the United States due to higher expenses when compared to other countries.

“This gave me insight into the lives of health care professionals and has only cemented my decision to further study medicine,” said the aspiring physician. “And without UIU’s scholarship program, I would not have been able to come to America, which is a great country, with the best education and an abundance of opportunities.”

“My favorite part of the science program is the class sizes, which give me the opportunity to better relate to

“But due to the scholarship Upper Iowa offered, I was allowed to come to America because the cost of my education here (at UIU) was equivalent to the cost of other recipients in Europe,” she added.

my professors on a one-on-one basis.

Soon after arriving on the Fayette campus, the biology major came to appreciate the University’s small classroom sizes and its faculty.

Following graduation from UIU, Pinima intends to attend a medical school and continue her journey toward a successful medical career.

“My favorite part of the science program is the class sizes, which give me the opportunity to better relate to my professors on a oneon-one basis. The faculty knows me by name and easily relates to me and any struggles I face in class,” she said. “Despite the small classroom size, the faculty uses different learning techniques to deliver a quality education to all students. I am able to do better in classes due to the small number of faculty. I know and understand most of the professors’ educational methods, thereby helping me achieve better grades.”

Upper Iowa University believes in providing support to students who are serious about continuing their higher education. UIU offers several scholarships of increasing amounts to incoming students, both in the United States and internationally, based on their grade point average (GPA) and/or financial need. Among the available scholarships are the International Trustee Scholarship, International Ambassador Scholarship, International Presidential Scholarship and International Deans’ Scholarship. 19
