NEW YORK (January 8, 2013) – Venable has strengthened its expanding labor and employment practice in New York with the arrival of Brian J. Turoff, who joins the firm as Of Counsel. He was previously with the New York office of Bryan Cave. Mr. Turoff represents companies in a wide range of industries in connection with all facets of labor and employment law. His clients include companies in the real estate, technology, finance, venue management, healthcare, entertainment, fitness and hospitality industries. Mr. Turoff serves as counsel and litigator in connection with workplace-related matters, such as sexual harassment and discrimination allegations; compliant payroll and compensation practices; employee hiring, firing, and disciplinary matters; and employment pacts, such as non-compete and non-solicitation agreements. He is also active in the traditional labor sector, representing clients in connection with collective bargaining, grievance arbitrations, and union organizing and elections. Mr. Turoff regularly handles matters before the National Labor Relations Board, Department of Labor, EEOC, and various courts and other administrative agencies. “As employees become better educated about their rights, employers must be more certain than ever that their employment practices – both on a day-to-day basis and more broadly – are in compliance with the law and provide them with the necessary measure of protection,” Mr. Turoff notes. “The consequences of missteps, due to more vigilant government enforcement and an assertive plaintiffs’ bar, are only continuing to increase. This is particularly so on the wage-and-hour front, but holds true in virtually all areas of employers’ dealings with their employees, whether those employees are unionized or not.” Michael Volpe, chair of the New York Labor & Employment practice at Venable, says, “Brian has built an impressively wide-ranging and sophisticated practice representing companies in their relations with organized labor as well as their internal employment and legal compliance matters. As this office’s labor and employment practice continues to grow and represent clients nationwide as well as throughout the New York area, a lawyer with Brian’s experience and understanding of all the most significant and timely issues is enormously valuable. We welcome him and, if current trends are any indication, will have plenty of work for him.” “Venable’s New York office has grown organically from within as well as through the addition of experienced and qualified lateral hires, of which Brian Turoff is a prime example,” said Ed O’Toole, partner-in-charge of Venable’s New York office. “We’re very pleased to have him join us and look forward to further growth of the labor and employment practice area with his contribution.” Mr. Turoff added, “I’m very pleased to join a group of sophisticated, first-rate lawyers such as Venable’s who are committed to developing meaningful, ongoing relationships with clients, both small and large, and are simultaneously committed to competitiveness in the marketplace. This truly distinguishes Venable, and I look forward to working and building my practice here.” Mr. Turoff earned his J.D. in 2002 from Georgetown University Law Center, and a B.A. magna cum laude in Philosophy, Politics and Law from Binghamton University. At Georgetown, he received a CALI Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement and wrote for the Georgetown Journal of Law and Policy in International Business. He has since authored “Preventing Lawsuits for Wrongful Termination” and “What You Need to Know about Employee Manuals and Handbooks” for the National Business Institute. ### Note: An American Lawyer 100 law firm, Venable serves corporate, institutional, governmental, nonprofit and individual clients throughout the U.S. and around the world.
