W. RONALD BENSON Obituary Condolences W. Ronald BENSON Died November 19, 2002. Born in Seattle July 7, 1906 to Henry K. and Eva Ronald Benson, he was the grandson of Judge J. T. Ronald, a Seattle pioneer and former mayor. His father, Henry K. Benson, founded and was the long time Chairman of the Chemical Engineering Department at the University of Washington. After completing the University of Washington with a chemical engineering major, Ronald joined the Dupont Cellophane plant in Buffalo, NY. He was recruited from there to the position of Technical Director of the Crown Zellerbach paper mill in Carthage NY and worked with the development of many new paper and coating products. There he met and married his wife Helen. He returned to Seattle in 1944 and founded Benson Chemical Company in 1950, selling and distributing raw materials to the paper, surface coatings and automotive additives industries. The company sold products throughout the Northwest with branches in Portland and Vancouver, B.C. Upon retirement, Ron sold Benson Chemical to Harrison and Crosfield, a UK based global chemical supplier. Ron spent many enjoyable hours gardening and was an avid salmon fisherman, flying to remote Canadian locations until into his 90s. Preceded in death by Helen, his wife of 59 years and by his brother Henry, Jr. Survived by daughter Ann (Carl) Cady, Guemes Island and son Buzz (Diane) Benson, Seattle; 2 sisters, Margaret Martin, Riverside, CA and Betty Runstad, Seattle; 4 grandchildren, Laurin Cady, Seattle, Jill Cady (Doug Dixon), Atlanta, Bruce (Debra) Cady, Seattle, Jennifer (Eric) Zinda, Seattle; 3 great grandchildren, Isaac and Charlotte Zinda, Emily Cady; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Monday, November 25, 2002 at 2 P.M. in the chapel at Park Shore Retirement Center, 1630 43rd Ave E. Gifts in memory of Ronald's life may be directed to Children's Hospital, PO Box 50020, Mail Stop S200, Seattle, WA 98145-5020 or the Henry K. Benson Scholarship Endowment in Chemical Engineering, University of Washington Box 351750, Seattle, WA 98195-1750. Published in The Seattle Times from Nov. 22 to Nov. 24, 2002
