LAFAYETTE-ORINDA PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH SUNDAY WORSHIP BULLETIN SUPPLEMENT

Introit: With a Voice of Singing Words and Music: Martin Shaw

With a voice of singing declare ye this, and let it be heard, Alleluia Utter it even unto the ends of the earth The Lord hath delivered his people, Alleluia O be joyful in God, all ye lands O sing praises to the honor of his name Make his praise to be glorious

Call to Worship One: Many: One: Many: One: Many: One: Many:

Lift your eyes to God: in the highest heavens, we see your glory, Great Creator. Reach out your hands to Jesus: in the compassion of an enemy, we know your love, O Christ. Feel the breath of the Spirit: in our bones and in our souls, the Spirit whispers hope. Let us worship the God who reigns, by entering the depths of our humanity and setting the humble soaring on the wings of the Spirit for the sake of eternity.

Hymn of Praise: Love Divine, All Loves Excelling Words & Music: Charles Wesley and Rowland Hugh Prichard

Love divine, all loves excelling, Joy of heaven, to earth come down Fix in us thy humble dwelling; all thy faithful mercies crown Jesus, thou art all compassion; pure, unbounded love thou art Visit us with thy salvation; enter every trembling heart Come, Almighty, to deliver; let us all thy life receive Suddenly return, and never, nevermore thy temples leave Thee we would be always blessing, serve thee as thy hosts above Pray, and praise thee without ceasing, glory in thy perfect love Finish then thy new creation; pure and spotless let us be Let us see thy great salvation perfectly restored in thee Changed from glory into glory, till in heav’n we take our place Till we cast our crowns before thee, lost in wonder, love, and praise

Psalms 122 and 123 ~ written by Francis Macnab (A fine wind is blowing) What a scramble our lives can be. We rush from place to place. We live on a knife-edge, ready it would seem, to throw our lot in with those who surrender to the negatives of our humanity. What a relief to come into a place like this where we can feel a quietening presence; where people can come together and find a common purpose and a unifying spirit. This whole city needs to re-find its sanity lest people come to believe that all their stresses are inevitable. So I say, let a good peace come over this city; let peace come to these walls; let all who come here, all their friends and their families know a strong and healthy peace with them. O God, we have been too long and too much with our eyes on the wrong things, even though we believe them to be right. Lift our eyes to a bigger better dimension, to be participants in your broadening good presence. We know the pains and the prejudices of life. Help us to experience the best kindness and the gentlest healing that flow from the very heart of the universe. I name you to be God; I believe you to be God. God, the source of all that is good!

Beautiful Things Words and Music by Michael Gungor and Lisa Gungor

Chorus:

You make beautiful things You make beautiful things out of the dust You make beautiful things You make beautiful things out of us

All this pain. I wonder if I’ll ever find my way I wonder if my life could really change at all All this earth. Could all that is lost ever be found? Could a garden come up from this ground at all?

One:

Merciful God, of what do we boast? Can we truly say with Paul that we do not boast about ourselves or our achievements? Does the danger in such thinking lie in the next step– the thought that we can do anything, or all things—by ourselves? Forgive us the times when we ignore you, O God, and depend on our own strength to do things our own way. Paul talks about power being made perfect in weakness. Forgive us for believing that we have to be hard and domineering if we want to get ahead in life. Paul says that he boasts of his weaknesses so that the power of Christ may dwell in him. Forgive us when we use our power selfishly or aggressively, ignoring that indwelling, Christ-given power which frees us to be vulnerable. Jesus says, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.” Permeate our lives with your grace, Lord, so that we can affirm with Paul that we are content with weaknesses for your sake, and fill us with the knowledge that it is when we allow ourselves to be empowered by you, that we are truly strong.

Baptism (9 a.m.) Tate William Krhoun and Dean Wyatt Allen; (11 a.m.) Christopher William Tarrab Question to the Congregation: Do you, as members of the church of Jesus Christ, promise to guide and nurture Tate and Dean (9 a.m.); Christoper (11 a.m.) by word and deed, with love and prayer, encouraging them/him to know and follow Christ and to be (a) faithful member(s) of his church? Living Water

Words and Music: Jon Weller & Patrick Tetreault

How lovely is Your dwelling place Oh Lord, God almighty My soul yearns, it even faints For the courts of the Lord chorus: You fill my soul with Your living water and I am Your child 2x Oh Lord, God who saves me Day and night I cry out before You May my prayer come before You Turn Your ear to my cry chorus Hallelujah, Hallelujah! Hallelujah, Hallelu! 2x

Anthem: O God Beyond All Praising Words: Michael Perry, 1982 Music: THAXTED from Gustav Holst, The Planets, 1918, Arranged by Dan Forrest

O God beyond all praising, we worship You today And sing the love amazing that songs cannot repay For we can only wonder at ev’ry gift you send At blessings without number and mercies without end We lift our hearts before You and wait upon Your word We honor and adore You, our great and mighty Lord For we can only wonder at ev’ry gift you send At blessings without number and mercies without end For Christ, your gift from heaven, from death has set us free And we through Him are given the final victory Then hear, O gracious Savior, accept our love that we We who know Your favor may serve you as our King And whether our tomorrows be filled with good or ill We’ll triumph through our sorrows and rise to bless You still To marvel at Your beauty and glory in Your ways And make a joyful duty our sacrifice of praise

Scripture: 2 Corinthians 12:9 My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.

The Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever Amen.

Closing Hymn: God Whose Love Is Always Stronger Tune: Beach Spring

God whose love is always stronger Than our weakness, pride and fear In your world, we pray and wonder How to be more faithful here Hate too often grows inside us Fear rules what the nations do So we pray, when wars divide us Give us love, Lord! Make us new! Love is patient, kind, and caring Never arrogant or rude Never boastful, all things bearing Love rejoices in the truth When we’re caught up in believing War will make the terror cease Show us Jesus’ way of living May our strength be in your peace May our faith in you be nourished May your churches hear your call May our lives be filled with courage As we speak your love for all Now emboldened by your Spirit Who has given us new birth Give us love, that we may share it Till your love renews the earth
