WANDERING THOUGHTS (as we see them)

If you like it hot, you should be happy – if not, just “grin and bear/bare it”, but be careful what you bare, it might burn! We come to imagine how folks living in such conditions day after day might feel! We tend to recall back to -40ºC wishing for the heat – we soon forget! Even though we think we’re “hard done by”, others are in worse shape. Areas around Regina are experiencing the driest July since 1887. In our immediate area, we have been lucky enough to receive the odd shower – a few tenths – minus storms – helps to relieve the situation temporarily. Farm friends tell us that some crops like – and need – the present conditions to properly mature while others need cooler temps to make for a good yield. Harvest has already begun in some areas – and as we “travel the rurals”, it will soon be happening around here. We notice haying still in “full swing” in various stages – some still being cut to baling done with bales removed to winter storage. Taylor’s fields east and southeast of Town appear to be one of the best yielding that we’ve seen. One local farmer tells us that he cut his alfalfa earlier than normal to beat the weevil infestation hoping to get a second cut, however the lack of moisture may have failed their plan. Seems that every source of hay is being utilized this year – reason being if not needed, there will be a sale for it in worse hit areas. Apple trees in local gardens seem to be fruit-loaded and possibly looking to an earlier harvest than usual. Crab apples seem to have “taken the year off” – weather or worm cause? Chokecherry seekers report that there is a real shortage in the wild as were saskatoons. Flower displays around Town are continuing to share their beauty – one catching our attention this week is a white hydrangea at the A & D Bunz residence on Clements Avenue – the blooms are huge. Some of the Town pots are literally overflowing with blooms – probably the best we’ve seen. The tree trimmers continue to do work around Town – the yard at the corner of Walter and Hill has taken on a new look. One local resident commented “I didn’t realize that there was a house behind those trees”. One large tree was removed at the United Church – upon examination, it was thought to have been a lightning victim at some time and was slowly dying. (It was a coincidence that the removal happened the same day that the RTR were constructing pies – No… they did use electric ovens and not wood burners!) See ya at the Rodeo – whoopee!

You asked ??

Question: Why is KoRner Kones closed on Sundays? Answer: Sunday is one of the slowest days for sales; do not have enough trained staff to cover; need a day with family.

You asked ??

Question: What is a Calcutta? Answer: It is an open auction held in conjunction with an event. A Rodeo Calcutta is where at the beginning of the event teams enter the arena and spectators are allowed to place their bids on the team they expect to win that day’s events. MRRA pays out the top four each day

The Myers’ flag corridor east of Town on #48 continues to grow – a couple of Canada 150 flags have been added. Blue Jays down 7 runs and came back to win the game last Sunday. The “Carter catch/fumble/recatch” in the Rider/Argonaut game on Saturday – resulting in a TD! And how about that “one-handed catch”! Record breaking temps in our province last Sunday – Regina & Moose Jaw recording 37º while Mankota came in at 38ºC (it was so hot that fire hydrants were chasing dogs). We are seeing out-of-province vehicle at Centennial Park – awesome!!

PIE EATING CONTEST You don’t want to miss the Second Annual Pie Eating Contest at the Ranch Rodeo! Will Brad Rutten keep the record set last year or will he be overthrown by a new champion? The contest will be at the end of the rodeo on Saturday, August 5th around 2 PM. Tickets will be for sale all day Friday & Saturday on the rodeo grounds-$1.00 per ticket. Come and discover a new experience and explore the past – check out all four buildings - - what better time than now – Canada’s 150th !!

Markets 10 am – 4 pm Entertainment 11 am – 4 pm Market Days – Aug. 6 – KO & Friends Aug. 13 – Southern Country Other Summer Market Dates: August 20, 27 September 3

RED MARKET BARN REPORT Last Sunday, the intense heat, did not keep people from attending the weekly market – perhaps folks didn’t stay for the day as much as usual, however the “main-stays” sweated it out – dancers included! We thought we’d seen it all ‘til Barn Boss #2 lured his pet snake from under the stage, across the “dance floor” towards the vendors – thanks to a vendor for rescuing the reptile and returning it to a safer environment! No reports on anyone seen on the Barn roof. Barn Boss #2’s reasoning – snakes don’t like accordions – it’s been a LONG season! Stay tuned for the continuing saga. KO & Friends are on stage August 6th.

CELEBRATING CANADA’S 150TH DID YOU KNOW …

Canada – or Kanata?? Kanata is the St. Lawrence Iroquoian word for “village” or “settlement”. Jacques Cartier transcribed the word as “Canada” in 1545. Canada has its own mysterious lake creature – Ogopogo, who reportedly lives in Lake Okanagan, BC. The greenest city in Canada is Vancouver with over 200 parks – and the second greenest in North America (just behind San Francisco). Canada is home to the longest street in the world – Younge Street in Ontario starts at Lake Ontario and runs north through Ontario to the Minnesota border, a distance of almost 2,000 km. Canada has the world’s longest coastline at 202,080 km. Measuring 9,984,670 sq. km. and comprised of 6 time zones, Canada is the second largest country in the world, behind Russia. Canada is the largest producer of natural uranium in the world, sourcing 20% to 30% of the world’s annual uranium output. Many famous Canadians in the entertainment field are: Jim Carrey, Keanu Reeves, Pamela Anderson, Rachel McAdams, Donald Sutherland, Ryan Reynolds, Celine Dion, Nelly Furtado, Avril Lavigne, Alanas Morissette, Justin Bieber. And … Canadians consume more macaroni and cheese than any other nation on earth!!

Man: Did you know that women use about 30,000 words a day and a man uses only about 15,000? Woman: That’s because we have to repeat everything.

Sincere sympathy from Wawota & Community… - to the family of Molly (Greenbank) Coupal who passed away on the 28th at the age of 71 years. - to Beryl Richards, Josie Matheson & other family members on the recent passing of Floyd Swenson (Geraldine’s husband) of Portal, N.D. at the age of 85 years.

SALES WERE GOOD The United Church Raise the Rafters group consider their day at the Red Market Barn last Sunday a great success – selling 92 pies and 88 jars of jams & jellies. When the gate opened at 10 a.m., buyers headed directly to get their favourite pie – by 3 p.m., inventory was depleted. August 20th will see another pie/jam/jelly sale - & Barn Boss #2 has voiced he’d like to have a “repeat performance” – this will be given reasonable consideration… P.S. Have a few pre-orders for August 20th.

GREAT – A – WIN (But Costly)! Week #6 was good to the Riders, but not for others (Argonauts & Me). After “collecting” on Week #5, sympathy set in, so we decided to let someone else win this time – and after all, the season has just begun! Upon entering the establishment to pay our debt, we see a “Rider wash tub” on the counter – and Rider attire worn by the gloating winner and his accomplice. (Talk about rubbing salt into an already sore wound). In recovery-mode after picking up bottles in the ditches, we clicked onto the Calgary-Hamilton game. (If it hadn’t been so dark outside, we should have gone looking for more bottles!!) A score record maybe? For Week #7, we have taken the recommendation of an out-of-town expert for our pick … see how that goes??

I went to see a psychic today – and accidently broke her crystal ball --- it ended up costing me a fortune.
