WHY IS THE CHURCH IMPORTANT TO YOU?

The NIV Application Commentary on Ephesians by Klyne Snodgras “Modern society is a mess. For all the good things we enjoy, we seem to have lost all sense of definition and direction. Who are we really, and what holds us together? We all have a need to belong, but to what? Is there anything that merits our commitment? This life is hard. Where will we find the resources to make it? Our societies’ moral guidelines have been erased. Are there boundaries and values that function as a legitimate guide? What is a human life for anyway?

The NIV Application Commentary on Ephesians by Klyne Snodgras The church is supposed to have answers to such questions, but in our day it has lost both its direction and its voice. The lives of Christians are too often no different from the lives of non-Christians. The Gospel has been diluted to ineffectual pabulum and so garbled by cultural trappings that it bears little resemblance to the pages of the New Testament. The Western church, including the American church, is not the—or even a—New Testament church. We need nothing less than a new Reformation.”

Matthew 16:15b-19 NASV Jesus said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17 And Jesus said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. 18 I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven.”

CHURCH--Defined Greek word—EKKLESIA (ek, out of, and klesis, a calling) • Used for a body of citizens gathered to discuss the affairs of Greece. • is used of a riotous mob (Acts 19:32, 41) • is used for Israel (Acts 7:38) • “I will build my church” (Matt. 16:18 ) • An EKKLESIA is not a crowd, but a gathering of folks with something in common. • My Definition: A group of Christians who share a common faith, are “knit” together, committed to one another, and united for a common cause.

GCLI Book 2, Session 3, The Church

What does the Bible liken a church to? • A Bride------------------------------------(Ephesians 5:25-27) • An Army-----------------------------------(2 Timothy 2:3) • A Flock-------------------------------------(John 10:27) • A living building/spiritual temple----(Ephesians 2:21)

The CORE

God has commissioned and established the local church as His primary means of fulfilling the Great Commandment and the Great Commission—loving God and others by winning people to Christ, building them to maturity, raising up leaders, and sending teams to start new churches (1 Timothy 3:15).

Courageous Leadership by Bill Hybels

“…the church has an utterly unique mission to fulfill on planet Earth, and that the future of our society depends, largely, on whether or not church leaders understand that mission, and mobilize their congregations accordingly.”

GCLI Book 2, Session 3, The Church The local church is God’s specific plan/idea to fulfill His purposes. • The word “Church” is used 79 times in the NT, most of which refer to the local church. • Most of the instructions for the church can only be carried out by a group of people who know one another, and have some kind of stable relationship. • Leadership and structure for local churches is clearly described. (what do all these have in common? Individuals combine themselves together to create something that is more than just a sum of parts)

GCLI Book 2, Session 3, The Church

A Christian who is not part of a local church is like: • A soldier without an army • A child without a family • A hand without a body • A football player without a team.

CHURCH When folks gather for a common purpose, there is potential for good and bad.

Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, implore you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called, 2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love, 3 being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

EPHESIANS 4:1- NASV

Showing tolerance to one another in love Tolerance: (Synonyms: broad-mindedness, open-mindedness, lenience, acceptance.) • Rendered “bearing with one another” in KJV, NIV, and ESV. • NLT renders it “making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love.”

EPHESIANS 4:1- NASV being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

Diligent: “SPOUDAZO” to make haste, to exert oneself, to be zealous, and hence, to be diligent, is rendered “endeavoring” in the KJV. (Vines Expository Dictionary of NT Words)
