what broadband provider do you use? macchef

Posted 26 March 2008 - 06:34 AM

i just had a rant on another thread that got me thinking about my isp. just wondering what you folks use, and how much you use? i'm with telstra adsl1, about $80 per month for 25Gb. recently upgraded to 25 from 12, and even still its only just enough.

Bigpond ADSl 12G plan 1500 but for a month or two recently wasn't much better than dial up! Bigpond denied the problem, but it's now mysteriously fixed. I'd go to anyone else if I could, I use 4G per month, so obviously I'm paying for a lot of bandwidth I don't use! Cheers, P

I think Vodafone has a plan that would suit (and no, I'm not a Vodafone customer or employee! Was just exploring it the other day.)

Dodo... yes I know! Have a look at Whirlpool its full of 'good news' stories about my ISP. http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-threa...m?f=31&g=65 (http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-threads.cfm?f=31&g=65) Let's not repeat those threads here please.

Virginbroadband looks interesting too, but I'm a little sceptical about keeping bandwidth when it all gets busy. Thanks for the tip though, P

I use iiNet (http://www.iinet.net.au/products/broadband/plans.html) Home 6 ADSL2+ plan for $99.00 per month I have bundled a VoIP connection, so for an extra $10 per month I get my own personal "phone line" (I'm in a shared house and got sick of sharing the primary phone line) and also get double the traffic allowance... so this means I get 80GB per month... 40GGB peak (Noon until 2am) and 40GB offpeak (2am to Noon) and I use every single byte.... in fact I've just gone over the 40GB quota in Peak time this month and will go over tonight for Off-peak... so Ill be capped at 64kbps for a few days but then I get reset on Friday morning.

I am with Nicholas, i am also on the Naked Home ADSL2+ speeds 65GB + 65GB for $119.95, and yes i still run over and get capped at 64k which is a right royal pain in the backside. Its called having a sun that plays warcraft 24/7 TL

Telstra ADSL2+ (albeit relatively low speed ADSL 2+) with Telstra packaged (at present) with phone and Foxtel. Contemplating naked DSL and VOIP combination. Aaron.

I'm with Eftel, 512/128, unlimited for $69.95 per month. I'm considering ADSL 2, but Eftel is coming up with this new thing called VDSL2, "up to 12 times faster then ADSL". Does anyone know what this is ? Vlad

I've got BigPond Cable Liberty 12 gbs. Works well for me, and it's all bundled together with my other services too. I think Telstra's the best internet provider in terms of reliability and up-time.

Really, I was with telstra many moons ago, and to be honest the service was terrible, the excess charges where well excessive and the bigpond mail was terrible, it very hit and miss and when it did crash you could wait hours if not days for them to fix it. It would take a miracle for me to ever go back to big pond for my ISP of choice, but thats just my experience with them. TL

BigPond Cable Liberty 12Gb. I also have a Telstra landline (but a 3 mobile) which saves me $10 on the monthly cable fee. I've been with BigPond for nearly two years and haven't had any problems (technical or customer service). They're not the cheapest out there, but they're a known quantity. I'd probably think of moving if I decided to go for a wireless connection, but that's not something I really need or want to do. I don't use the email facility, except to receive BigPond's correspondence, which I have forwarded to my regular email address.

Too many times I have been called to help people who are with Big Pond, ... whether it's with their internet banking , or just basic connection set ups, .... Big Pond are just not that MacFriendly it would seem. I have been with Internode now for about four years, still running strong. Not a glitch or problem since I started. They are Apple Savy, and their support is great. I did a fair bit of research before signing up though, and the whirlpool site is still the best point of call for getting all the info you need when choosing an ISP. It was down to iinet, and internode, for my needs. It is interesting to note that some ISP's are offering free itunes downloads (as mentioned in the podcast), but I think the deciding factors have to be USE and PRICE. What are you going to do with your broadband connection? How much data do you see yourself using? This will change as you go, so the ability to upgrade or downgrade is important. Nothing worse than being locked into a 20GB per month plan, when you only read the articles here on macworld. A typical phone conversation for me would be: CALLER: "Hello, I need you to help me with my internet connection...." ME: "Oh, so you are with BigPond then?" CALLER: "Yes, oh wow, .. how did you know????"

I've been using Virgin Broadband namely due to my location. We are just on the fringe of 3G mobile coverage and although the local exchange is set up for ADSL due to Telstra's typical lack of foresight we are stuck behind a line concentrator - hence we will never get broadband any other way (other than BWA or Sat). I was able to get in when the plans were 512kB U/D for the first 4Gb, then throttled to 128kB U/D after that - no excess usage fee (Due to recent damand they have reduced this to only 2Gb for new applications). Okay - this is slow compared to someone living within 2 klm of an ASDL2+ enabled exchange but hey, when your alternative is dial up 56k it is fantastic. There are a few downsides but all in all it's been great for us.

With iinet, although regular listeners to the Podcast may work out that I might not be for that much longer. Which will be a pity; I'm on one of their older plans where they don't count uploads, and switching to most of the better providers in my neck of the woods will almost invariably involve going to a double-dipping plan....
