I'm interested in creating some missions/campaigns on the Foundry. I enjoy writing, and hope to make them interesting as well as fun. The problem is that I don't have a strong background in all things "Forgotten Realms." I don't know who the main factions are, what races are affiliated with one another, and how these different races/factions feel about one another. In short, I'd like to create original stories that can work within Forgotten Realms without stepping all over what is accepted as "canon." It seems like the world does allow for a high degree of creative freedom, but still, I'd like for whatever I create to feel like it meshes well within the existing world. What resources are out there to help me get "caught up" on the world? Not sure I have time to dive into novel after novel, so a good high level overview of the history and current state of the world would be helpful. 21 comments

The Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting book for 3.0 is, in my opinion, the best book ever written. I don't mean best RPG ever written - I mean I think it's the best book I've ever read. It's shorter than a novel and is extremely light on rules. It's about 80% information on the world of Toril and it's probably the most complete guide to Forgotten Realms in existence. It's a great read and available in PDF format from a variety of sources.

sub 366 were here in the last 15 minutes Welcome to /r/Neverwinter Adventurer!

Edit: Further, a Faerun guide called A Grand History of the Realms exists. It's dense, but great. It was made at the last minute at the end of 3.5 on a shoe-string budget so the artwork is pulled from other FR material. permalink

That Campaign Setting book looks like it might be about what I'm looking for. It seems like it's intended for DMs, and since creating stuff in the Foundry is sort of like being a DM, I imagine that kind of resource would be helpful. Thanks! permalink

Isn't this post Spellplague? 3.0/3.5 is before and a ton has changed due to the Spellplague, it is great history but I feel like it wouldn't apply for right now. permalink

What I gathered the OP was looking for is the "feel" of forgotten realms, which hasn't changed in 4.0. The spellplague is the newest disaster to face the Realms, but it's still the world detailed in the FRCS. I think its as applicable to Neverwinter as, say, reading a book about 20th century American history and applying it to the present. Just go in being aware that a lot may have changed, but its still the same country. That being said the info in the FRCS should definitely be supplemented by at least a primer on whats happened since then. permalink

What is Neverwinter? (Trailer) Neverwinter is a free, action MMORPG based on the acclaimed Dungeons & Dragons fantasy roleplaying game. Epic stories, action combat, and classic roleplaying await those heroes courageous enough to enter the fantastic world of Neverwinter! Neverwinter is out on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 and this subreddit caters to all versions.

Agreed - it is a great read. I picked up the player's guide for 4.0 that I will have to look over again. DnD table top is hard to come by. permalink

Please do not post about or ask for advice regarding power-leveling. It does not take long to get from 1 - 60+ via the quest line. If you are in that big a hurry, buy the level 70 pre-made characters. Any posts regarding power-leveling will be removed. Multiple posts regarding this may result in a temporary or permanent ban from this subreddit.

I would look at the wiki for the forgotten realms. Can probably brush up on the world pretty quickly. permalink

I've just been reading the forgotten realms wiki and novel summaries. It peeked my interest enough that I recently bought the Druidhome saga, Cleric Quintet, and the first 3 Drizzt novels at half-price books. Wow, I have some reading to do! permalink

Do not make any post that is malicious/racist/derogatory towards another specific person or guild, nor give any of their personal information out. This includes naming and shaming of any individuals or guilds, with or without evidence. (Clarification on Zero Tolerence Policy) Treat people, including the devs, with respect. Disrespectful behavior may result in a 1 - 3 day ban for first offense, 3 - 5 day ban for 2nd offense, 5 - 7 day for 3rd offense, and a permanent ban for any offenses after that.

The 4-6 books of the drizzt series called the icewind dale trilogy is more popular I believe. I personally found 1-3 to be very different ( Drizzt is more of a solo char while in 4-6 it follows more chars). I hope you enjoy and you'll totally see why the founder's pack came with a panther. permalink

Trading is allowed here and encouraged. Please be clear what you're posting, what platform you're trading from, and if possible what you're seeking to trade for. Note: Any RMT (Real Money Transactions) or cross game/platform trades are a violation of the ToS, and will result in a ban from this subreddit, as would trading accounts regardless game and/or platform. Trade posts requesting AD will also be removed. Use the AH for that. Begging (or requesting free items) is prohibited.

Everyone's always drooling over Drizzt, but Cadderly is the man. permalink

I've read The Dark Elf Trilogy and The Icewind Dale Trilogy which have a LOT about Menzoberranzan and the Forgotten Realms. Haven't been able to start Neverwinter yet but I'm sure those would help as well. They also quickly became some of my favorite books. R.A. Salvatore is great. permalink

No advertising for other MMOs. For other MMO discussions, check out /r/mmorpg.

For even more about Menzoberranzan read the trilogy "Legacy of the Drow". It's books 7-10 in the Drizzt storyline. permalink

When posting codes for giveaway, please avoid posting the code in plain text, as this allows bots to claim them. Either post a image (only marginally better, bots can still claim them, but not as easily), or remove a couple digits and have people fill in the blanks by asking math questions or something similar.

Search forgotten realms on amazon. Theres simply too much content. Also there is a rare item you can find on ebay sometimes called forgotten realms atlas. Its an interactive cd rom with alot of maps and such. can be costly but most people copy the cd and resell it. Its discontinued software now. May even be able to find it online if you know where to look permalink

That's probably irrelevant now after the events of the Spellplague, though the geography as far as locale's go, is probably near identical. permalink

You can go to ebay/amazon/your local gaming store and see if they have the forgotten realm sourcebooks. That's the best if you want really authentic stuff. Mid- to High-Magic levels interwoven with political intrigue are a good place to start for Neverwinter/Sword Coast centric content. permalink

I hate grinding for RP, mats, etc. Anyone interested in being "hired" to farm? Agree on a fixed AD price for goods and I will buy them en masse, regularly.
