Conference Program 2017

As a collective of RSL Licensed Clubs & RSL Licensed Sub Branches across the state jurisdictions of Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland we all share common themes, goals and challenges as contemporary RSL hospitality venues. At this year’s conference delegates we will come together to hear from business leaders and industry experts in an effort to gain that competitive edge in an ever changing hospitality market place. Operating complex and diverse commercial RSL Licensed Club operations in the current day is challenging for all Boards, Management and Staff. But we are also faced with the ongoing challenge of continuing to provide support and assistance to our ADF veteran community under the banner of the RSL. Effectively RSL Clubs are a unique entity as we continue to work through both the challenges of ‘Who We Are’ and ‘What We Do’. Hopefully the 2017 National RSL & Services Clubs Conference will provide some valuable insights and ideas for us all to take away and make us better equipped on both counts.

FEDERAL MINISTER FOR VETERANS AFFAIRS HON DAN TEHAN MP The Federal Member for Wannon in Victoria MP Dan Tehan will provide the delegates with an insight into his current portfolio as the Federal Minister for Veterans Affairs in the changing landscape of caring for our veterans of all ages and conflicts. As our WW11 diggers depart the scene RSL Clubs will continue to face the day to day challenges of caring for and supporting our veterans from more recent contemporary conflicts.

‘WHAT I DIDN’T LEARN AT HARVARD’ ROB REDENBACH

INTRODUCTION OF CONFERENCE

CONFERENCE MC TOBY TRAVANNER Our conference MC Toby Travanner is according to his peers the best of the best and has achieved the accolade of being known as the Australia’s number one business MC. He combines the roles of consultant, keynote speaker, sales person, manager and facilitator into his role as an MC. He will capture and motivate the delegates by ensuring that the key messages from each conference session are highlighted and linked with each other to the theme of the conference.

Rob Redenbach is one of the Australia’s leading conference keynote speakers and is an Ex Defence Force member serving for 6 years in 1RAR. Drawing from experience that includes taking part in FBI drug raids in Los Angeles or working with the bodyguard team of Nelson Mandela in South Africa and providing armed security to aid workers in Iraq Rob’s perspective on leadership and resilience is as pragmatic as it’s possible to be. Add to that a record of post graduate academic achievement that includes a Master’s Degree in Terrorism, Safety and Security and it becomes clear that Rob’s background and approach is far from conventional. What Rob does have is the capacity to successfully transfer the strategies of elite security to business and everyday life.

PANEL DISCUSSION

CLUB HOSPITALITY REDEVELOPMENT TRENDS Luke Ponti Round 6, Richard Butler Rubicon, Lindsay Verdon Paynter Dixon ‘What Does an RSL Licensed Club Look Like in 2017’ Of course Club master planning and redevelopment is always something which RSL Clubs of all sizes are constantly grappling with when considering their existing Club layout and design. In this session we will speak with some of Australia’s leading architectural and building & construction experts about what a modern day Club looks like now and what it may look like in the future.

Curtis McGrath OAM is a paracanoeist who took up canoeing competitively after having both of his legs amputated as a result of a mine blast whilst serving in the Australian Army in Afghanistan as a combat engineer. Whilst serving with the 6th Engineer Support Regiment on the 23rd August 2012 Curtis was injured by an improvised explosive device during operations in Khas Urozgan District Province. Curtis lost his left leg below the knee and his right leg at the knee. He suffered shattered bones in his wrist, a burnt left arm, perforated ear drums and a large wound on his thigh. Within three months he was walking on prosthetic legs. At the 2016 Australian Paralympic Team Launch Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull made the following comments about Curtis McGrath ‘Now three years on from that shocking accident, that shocking event, those wounds, those injuries, he is out on the water representing Australia at Rio, providing an inspiration to our Defence Forces, to all our wounded warriors, those with a disability and those without. His story is a remarkable feat of triumph over adversity, triumph over tragedy’. Of course Curtis then went on to win the Gold Medal in the Men’s KL2 at the 2016 Rio Paralympics.
