Archdiocese of Los Angeles October 5, 2013 Dearest Friends, It brings me great joy to have the opportunity to welcome all of you to the San Pedro Regional Religious Education Congress. Our theme this year “Fear Not! Seek God!!” has its roots in Salvation History. We hear from the prophets Isaiah 41:10 “Do not Fear: I am with you. Jeremiah 29:11 for I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord Plans for your welfare and not for woe, so as to give you a future of hope. These were the sacred scriptures that kept me strong while I was in the hospital after my stroke. Fear has no home when God is in our lives. So as we proclaim the goodness of our Lord, "Fear Not! Seek God!!” As you look through the workshops being offered please keep in mind others that might benefit from this enriching day and share this information with them. I challenge you to choose three workshops that will help you become more effective in your ministry, will nourish your hunger for learning more about your faith and will help you grow personally. We continue to honor catechists who have been nominated and selected to receive the Excellence in Catechetical Service Awards, because of their exemplary service to their faith communities. See page 28 for further details. We are proud of their commitment to share the Good News. Busca a Dios! In Christ Jesus, En Cristo Jesús,

Do not fear: I am with you; do not be anxious: I am your God. I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my victorious right hand; For I am the LORD, your God, who grasp your right hand; It is I who say to you, Do not fear, I will help you. ISAIAH 41: 10, 13

In the San Pedro Region, we are blessed to have many high school youth who have said a resounding “YES!” to God’s invitation to share their Faith and Trust in the LORD by serving their parish and school communities in leadership roles. Like their adult counterparts, these young leaders are called to continue growing in their faith and developing their leadership skills. The Youth Track provides an opportunity for them to do so during the Regional Congress. The workshops in the Youth Track are directed specifically toward high school youth who serve as peer leaders in their parishes or schools. Youth Track participants will have the opportunity to engage, learn and grow in each workshop period. We ask that adults register for the youth track workshops only if they are bringing youth participants. Please note that parishes and schools are responsible for providing the appropriate chaperones and supervision for the youth they bring to the Regional Congress.

Leadership: From Good to Great In many respects, disciples are leaders. But what kind of leaders? There are certain traits and behaviors that combine together to make someone a great leader. How can you lead others with vision and purpose? How can you use your time efficiently and communicate in ways to help others while also helping yourself? Come explore the top 10 things that define great leadership.

Faith 365 Faith. It’s the foundation for everything you do as a peer leader. But what happens when you leave the Church property? Pope Francis challenges us to live as missionary disciples wherever we are, 365 days a year. Find out what that means and how you can live up to the challenge!

I have a life, you know! Are you feeling like you are too busy and can't handle everything in your life? Well, you are not alone. Most teenagers, or people in general, now a days are finding it difficult to find balance. Balancing all that we do is hard but not impossible. Come find out how you can balance sports, school, family, friends...life and still have time for ministry. With God at our center anything is possible.

Gabriel Reyes is a native of Southern California who has served in the Archdioceses of Los Angeles, Orange, and San Bernardino as a leader in Youth Ministry and Confirmation. He also serves as a speaker, music/worship leader, and retreat leader. Gabriel holds a B.A. in Psychology (Christian Counseling), and is pursuing a M.A. in Executive Leadership. He currently serves as Youth Minister at St. James in Redondo Beach.

Katie Zeigler serves the Archdiocese of Los Angeles as Coordinator of Youth Ministry in the Office of Religious Education. Her previous ministry experience includes parish Youth Ministry/Confirmation Coordinator, retreat facilitator, campus ministry team member, and parish RCIA team member. She has been a speaker at the National Conference for Catholic Youth Ministry (NCCYM), and is a member of the National Association of Catholic Youth Ministry Leaders (NACYML). Katie holds an M.A. in Pastoral Theology from Loyola Marymount University.

Dayrin Perez is the Youth Ministry Director at Sacred Heart in Covina. I have been involved in ministry ever since I was confirmed (so about 15 years). Having my family with me in ministry is one of the things that makes me really happy. I love cheese pizza, sweet potato fries, the beach and I would never leave California! Oh and I could play games all day.

A-10 The Catechist as the Liturgical Minister This workshop will address the liturgical formation that the catechist renders in the process of sacramental catechesis. Sr. Rosanne Belpedio is currently Director for the Office of Worship in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. She has served as a consultant in the ORE and has ministered in various parishes and Dioceses in California and as a missionary in Chile. A-11 "Go, therefore, and make disciples" ... Me Lord? We are called to be Co-Creators with God. Called to imitate Jesus, the Master Teacher. This is a workshop of ideas, songs, prayers, and activities to inspire your creativity as you walk with the children toward God. Ms. Eileen Fewless is a consultant for RCL Benziger and a DRE at St. Bernardine in Woodland Hills. A-12 "It's the YEAR of the Family so let's Strengthen Family Unity!!!" Family unity is a gift from God that Jesus promised if we love one another as He loved us. Join us for this exciting and practical seminar as popular Catholic therapist, Claire Frazier-Yzaguirre, MFT, MDiv, shares the dynamics of mutual love in daily family life and how we can increase our love at home to make unity possible. A life of unity requires that we give ourselves unconditionally and joyfully, that we accept others compassionately, and that we share concretely and generously with one another. When we are united, we experience the intimate life of God and we are truly a family. Come and learn how you can strengthen your UNITY and JOY at home and help those in your ministry to experience Jesus' call to "love one another as I have loved you!" Mrs. Claire Frazier-Yzaguirre, MFT, M.Div. is a Catholic Marriage & Family Therapist, an ordained minister and joyful convert of many years to the Catholic Church, a family life consultant to churches in various dioceses & denominations, speaker, author, wife, and mom. Claire is the co-author with her husband, Dr. John Yzaguirre, of their popular book & program, "Thriving Marriages" (also in Spanish, Casados y Felices) taught to thousands of couples in churches in 50+ cities a year. To learn more about their program & resources in English & Spanish, and to book a talk at your church, please visit them at www.ThrivingFamilies.com A-13 The Call to Prayer in the Journey of Life-long Learning Life-long learning and a personal commitment to catechesis in your parish inspires a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ and His Church. This workshop will discuss aspects of personal and communal prayer as it relates to your ministry; ever growing in grace and sharing the gift of faith for decades to come. Mr. Warren G. Kunkle is presently an educational consultant for William H. Sadlier Inc. He is a Master Catechist and volunteers in his parish as the High School Confirmation Parent Formation Coordinator. He has also served as a Parish Administrator, Youth Minister/Confirmation Coordinator and a variety of other ministries over the past 25 years. With his wife, Elga and their three teenage sons’, a broader understanding of the realities of our “domestic” church and its unique challenges, will be fore-front in this presentation. A-14 Infant Baptism and the RCIA- Friends or Rivals in the Church? When a family asks for the Baptism of their "child", depending on who they ask, will receive different responses- "We would be happy to baptize your child!" Or- "I'm sorry we can't do that. You have to put your child in a 2 year program to fully initiate him/her." How does this make sense, when from parish to parish the practice is different in how they celebrate the Sacraments? What should we be doing and how do we help people make sense of what the Church is asking of them? Fr. Pedro Lopez A priest of the Archdiocese since 1981, several pastoral assignments, pastor of St. Pius X Parish in Santa Fe Springs. Received a Masters Degree in Liturgical Studies from the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, is a consultant to the Office for Worship in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and the Diocese of San Bernardino. A member of the Liturgical Commission of the Archdiocese, Dean of Deanery 18 in the San Pedro Pastoral Region.

A-15 Let's Keep Our Learners Engaged Come join me for a workshop filled with media ideas to keep your learners engaged. Learners include children, teens, parents, ministry volunteers and adults. You will walk away with materials you can utilize in your catechetical sessions, retreats, parent meetings and RCIA sessions. My passion is MEDIA and providing opportunities for our learners to meet Christ and the Church in a new and different way. Mrs. Terri Palmer is the Director of Faith Formation at St. Augustine Church in Culver City. Terri has over 25 years of experience in Religious Education, including positions as a Catechist, Retreat Facilitator, Lecturer and DRE. She and her husband, Deacon Scott, completed the Archdiocese Diaconate Formation program in 1999. She has continued her formation by earning multiple certification and went onto become a Master Catechist in 2010. Terri graduated from the LMU RCIA Certification Program May 29, 2012. Terri also serves on the L.A. Archdiocese ABC Board and is a VIRTUS Facilitator. A-16 Let's Play and Pray!! What do the words "play" and "pray" have in common other than rhyming together? Well, both words start with the letter "p", are one syllable and can be action verbs. Okay, agreed! But what common characteristics do "play" and "pray share in our faith formation programs? Come and learn how to help young children express themselves through creative use of their imagination and an awareness of our loving God through spontaneous prayer. Come and explore your inner child who can't wait to meet you! Ms. Jan Pedroza Consultant for Early Childhood Faith Formation, Program Coordinator for the Religious Education Congress and Master Catechists for the Office of Religious Education, Archdiocese of Los Angeles, Jan has been involved in Early Childhood education since 1993. She has been a member of the Los Angeles Archdiocese Early Childhood Board for 16 years. Jan has two grown daughters and a teenage son who still helps her prepare crafts for the workshops she teaches! She has presented at the RECongress in Anaheim, and at the regional congresses throughout the the L.A. Archdiocese. A-17 Liturgy: Come Learn what we believe since Vatican II The reforms of the sacred liturgy since Vatican II involve more than Mass in the vernacular and the priest facing the congregation. They reflect a different understanding of church. Msgr. Sork will trace the developments in liturgy that led to Vatican II and outline the reforms that flowed out of Vatican II. The leadership of Pope Francis is a welcome affirmation of the changes of Vatican II and a reassurance that the reforms need not be reformed (revoked) but that continue the spirit that calls for full, conscious, active participation. He will share what it means to him as a pastor and to his local faith community, St. John Fisher. He welcome questions and insights as to what other parishes are striving to do. Msgr. David Sork a second-generation native of Los Angeles a second-generation graduate of Loyola High School, earned a B.A. in Philosophy and an M.A. in Religion from St. John's College, Camarillo, and was ordained in 1970. After ordination he was associate pastor at St. Anselm Church, Los Angeles, (1970-1974) and St. Joseph Church, Hawthorne (1974-1975). Six years after ordination he was sent for further study and received a second M.A. (1977) from Fordham University, New York. Several years later he returned to study at Fordham where he received a Ph.D. (1988) in Religious Education. He was associate director of the Archdiocesan Office of Religious Education (1975-1985) where he directed the catechist formation programs and in 1977 founded the master catechist formation program. During that time he was in residence at the Church of the Good Shepherd, Beverly Hills (1975-1976), and Mother of Sorrows Church, Los Angeles (1977-1985), where he did part-time pastoral work. He was Pastor at St. Louis of France, La Puente, from 1987-1999. He has been Pastor of St. John Fisher since June 1999, his longest assignment as a priest. He feels blessed to be called to shepherd the people of God. A-18 Women's Spiritual Development How is a woman’s spiritual development different than the male journey? Where’s the manual? A Vibrant feminine spirituality unleashes life in women, one which Jesus encouraged. This talk will include some false perceptions of spiritual growth that can be destructive for women. Engage with some women saints from our Catholic tradition who reflect a spirituality viable for women today. Sr. Kathleen Bryant is a Religious Sister of Charity, a workshop presenter and retreat facilitator. Sr. Kathleen has a Masters Degree in Spirituality from USF and a Doctor of Ministry Degree from Graduate Theological Foundation.

A-19 Divine Mercy in the Lives of Notorious Sinners The Church offers the stories of the lives of the saints for us to examine and find inspiration for our own lives and search for holiness. The problem is that most of us haven’t heard of too many saints who were actually pretty notorious sinners. Many people today feel guilty about their past sins and believe that God could never really love them because of the things that they did. In ministry, this is often the unspoken barrier that keeps them from progressing further in holiness and more complete participation. This workshop is going to look at the stories of several saints who committed horrible sins and yet, through the mercy and grace of God, they repented and became official saints in our Church. Come meet a fallen woman, an anti-pope, and a mass murderer who all became saints through the mercy of God and their cooperation with His grace! Mrs. Jennifer Campbell has been involved in religious education for over 25 years. In addition to volunteering in her parish catechetical programs, she taught full time in Archdiocesan high schools for 14 years and was the Theology Chair at Bishop Amat High School for 10 years. She served on the Archdiocesan Religion Standards Board for High Schools, was a Catholic school elementary principal, and has overseen all levels of parish catechetical formation at her home parish. Jenny has an M.A. in Applied Spiritual Theology and is a certified StrengthsFinder coach. She lives in the southland with her husband, has 4 children and 6 grandchildren. A-20 Young Adult Catholics: in the middle, but are they at the center? Looking at the big news stories it seems like young adults are all becoming "nones" (Checking the "None" box on surveys asking their religion) or they're a JPII inspired generation at the heart of the New Evangelization. There is truth to both and lots in between about this critical age group. This workshop will place Young Adult ministries (including marriage prep, RCIA and others) in the context of the Church's catechetical teaching to address practical challenges and opportunities. Mr. Jason Coito is the Consultant for Young Adult Formation for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles Office of Religious Education. He has been ministering with high school and college students for 12 years in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Jason, his wife Jen, and their awesome son are parishioners at St. Julie Billiart in Newbury Park. A-21 Bullying at Catholic Schools - Are We Addressing the Needs of LGBT Students? Anti-bullying campaigns are now quite commonplace at secular/public schools with many having formed Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) clubs and addressing the issues of LGBT bullying head on. What are parochial schools doing to address these issues? Speakers and audience will dialogue on best practices. Session will also provide suicide awareness/ intervention training. Mr. Frank McKown is Co-Chair of the L.A. Archdiocese's Catholic Ministry with Lesbian and Gay Persons (CMLGP), founded in 1986 by Cardinal Mahoney. The Ministry is the oldest such organization in the nation and provides a safe and welcoming environment for lesbians and gay persons through liturgy, outreach, education, and fellowship. Mr. McKown has planned and led liturgies and retreats on a variety of topics and has spoken at Regional Congresses since 2010. A lifelong Angelino, he received degrees from UCLA and Pepperdine and works in the Aerospace industry. A-22 Beyond the Obvious: The New Evangelization and Me, the Catechist/Catholic Educator As a catechist or Catholic educator, isn’t my entire day already spent in Evangelization? B-10 A Spirituality of Resilience How does your spiritual life lead you to be fully alive especially after difficult challenges in life? God’s invitation is always to life. We are wired to bounce back and be resilient, so what stops us and how do we get there? Sr. Kathleen Bryant See A-18 B-11 Angels and Demons: Separating Myths from Facts With Halloween approaching and fast becoming one of the most celebrated holidays in America, it’s no wonder that cherubs, angels, ghouls, goblins, guardian angels, demons, St. Michael the Archangel and Satan all seem to get mixed up together in our culture. It’s hard to know if it’s all Christian belief, or is there a difference if it’s Eastern spiritualism or New Age? We’ll look at Scripture and Tradition and what Catholic theologians throughout the centuries have said about these spiritual beings. We’ll also discuss why it’s important to know about them and how they can affect our daily lives and our pursuit of holiness. Mrs. Jennifer Campbell See A-19 B-12 Evangelizing the Catholic imagination When Fr. Andrew Greeley described the Catholic imagination, he spoke about the Catholic sacramental way of looking at the world. We love symbols and metaphors - Gerard Hopkins to Steven Colbert. To paraphrase Fr. Greg Boyle, what "rhymes with God" in your life? How can the Catholic imagination help us understand and share the faith? Mr. Jason Coito See A-20 B-13 The "I Dare You" that comes living your Christ. Like the many saints, all of us have been given a unique "glory experience" particular to our own Divine callings. Though a dare can be commonly perceived as a threat, the dare of the world to us today is to "Show Me" your Christ; this Christ; THE Christ! Show me what you've been given to see! How do we as individual Christians in the Catholic community dare to trust and proclaim the glory of that Christ has shown us by Faith. Fr. Ken Deasy has lived a life in the Church that is anything but ordinary. After graduating from Saint Francis High School, he entered the Capuchin Franciscans and returned to his alma mater as a teacher and fundraiser. Discerning a call to the Priesthood, Father Deasy entered Saint John’s Seminary and went on to serve as a parish priest at Saint Monica, Saint Bernardine of Siena and Saint Agatha, where he was pastor for 11 years. Outside of parish ministry, Father Deasy became more involved in global missionary work and detention ministry as he spent many years volunteering at the Central Jail and Juvenile Detention Facilities. More recently, he has served as director of the Archdiocesan Missionary Childhood Association leading to travel to impoverished areas of the world, most notably, Haiti and South Sudan, Africa. B-14 From Worship into Service: Engaging Catholics in the Social Mission of the Church through the Power of Prayer and Music St. Augustine once said that “the one who sings prays twice.” Notice he never said anything about singing on key! This workshop will invite us to meditate on God’s love for the poor through music that you can use in various ministerial settings. If you love singing, enjoy music, and/or have a hunger and thirst for serving others in need; this workshop is for you. Mr. Sergio Lopez Sergio Lopez is a former youth minister and worship leader from the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. C-10 What Every Serious Christian Should Know About Judaism Did you know that Judaism is much more than the religion of the Hebrew Bible? Did you know that Jews have sacred literature beyond the Hebrew Bible (that we have our own "New Testament")? Did you know that Jews mean something completely different than Christians when we speak of the Messiah, sin, redemption, salvation, repentance and forgiveness? Come and question, learn and explore with Rabbi Michael Lotker, author of "A Christian's Guide to Judaism" published by the Paulist Press. Rabbi Michael Lotker See B-16 C-11 Calling all Catechists! How to engage parents in Faith Formation! The National Directory for Catechesis states that parents are the first educators of faith for their children (234), and yet, the most common complaint of catechists is that parents are not fulfilling this role. This workshop will provide ideas and insights into empowering parents to be more engaged in faith formation and ministers of their own Domestic Church. Mrs. Cristina Alba See B-23 C-12 A Call to Begin Again, Starting From Jesus! Can you name the Ten Commandments? What are the Seven Sacraments? How many Apostles were there? Easy questions…right? What about, who was Jesus? What did he stand for? What was his true mission? It may surprise you to know that many Catholics struggle with the second set of questions, and many don’t even know the answers. In this class we will examine our personal relationship with this radical man named Jesus…a man we hardly know. As Catholics we are called to live our lives as He did, yet how can we when many times we don’t know who He truly was? Pope Francis has called for change in the Church, a call to begin again, starting from Jesus! Miss Isela Magallanes has been working with teenagers for 15 years. What began as volunteer work soon became a loved mission. Isela taught Confirmation classes for seven years and continues to do talks for teen and adult retreats, Youth Ministry, and Regional Congress. She has taught everything from kindergarten to RCIA, but her love remains guiding and mentoring teenagers. Isela received her Bachelor degree in Sociology from CSULB and is currently working as a Correctional Officer at a juvenile correctional facility. Alma E. Plascencia has been involved with Religious Education for 35 years. Her experience includes the Confirmation program, Youth ministry, retreats, community counseling and mentoring, community care, and directing the religious education program. Alma also established and coordinates, “Looking for the Face of Christ”, a program geared at feeding and serving the homeless in the city. C-13 Prayer through the Ages: Form and Focus of Effective Prayer for Everyone How can we quiet ourselves to pray? What can we do to open ourselves more to a deep spiritual life? This workshop will draw on examples from the Saints, liturgy, and personal experience to give a fresh perspective on nurturing an active and abundant prayer life. Ms. Maureen Pratt See B-24 C-14 Welcome our Blessed Mother into your Classrooms This workshop will provide catechists with activities, crafts, lesson plans and ideas to help bring the Blessed Mother Mary to their classrooms. Mrs. Lillian Cruces has been involved in Religious Education since 1977. She is a long time Catechist and has taught 5th grade and coordinated Religious activities in the Los Angeles area catholic schools. She is currently the Coordinator of Elementary Catechesis at St. Mary's Church in Whittier. She has also served at the national Level as the West Region Representative of NPCD the Professional Association of Parish catechetical Directors and she is a regular congress speaker in the San Gabriel and San Pedro Pastoral Regions.

C-15 Creative ways to share God’s amazing, extravagant love and Mercy (the Joy of the Gospel!) God’s great love and mercy has changed my life forever! Every day I fall more in love with God and with those God sends into my life! Isn’t that what we want for our students: not to entertain them, but to foster continuing lifelong conversion? How do we become Matchmakers and connect our students to the God who created them and loves them beyond belief? Let’s share the JOY together in this workshop, as we experience and create activities and prayers (for all ages) using media, scripture and the ordinary to explore God’s great love and mercy – so that we can pass it on! Mrs. Nancy Longo has been involved in parish ministry for the past 22 years as DRE and Youth Minister. She is a Master Catechist, has her Advanced Bible Institute Certificate and the National Youth Ministry Certificate. Nancy loves her family – who are spread across the United States, 7 grown children (his, mine and ours) and 14 grandchildren! She loves Jesus and her passion is to use technology to share the Good News! C-16 Weathering the Storms of Life (& Ministry): Learning how to Walk on the Water! Being a follower of Jesus and serving His people is so rewarding and challenging. This life of a disciple can at times be filled with rough seas that threaten to sink us. We will look to Matthew 14:22-33 to see how to not just weather the storm but walk on the water! Mrs. Katie Tassinari has been involved in ministry for the past 28 years. She is currently the San Gabriel Regional Coordinator for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, Office of Religious Education. She is a Lay Ministry Student at St. John's Seminary in Camarillo, working on a Master's of Arts in Theology and Pastoral Ministry. C-17 Bloom Where You Are Planted So many times we find ourselves not where we want to be and wondering what we did to get there and what we can do to get out of it. Based on the book of Jonah and the wisdom of St. Theresa of Lisieux this workshop will teach us not only to accept the conditions that God sends us, but to embrace them and thrive in them. Forgiveness, discernment, patience, and the rewards that come with it will be talked about. Luella will share her personal story of courage, forgiveness, survival, and triumph. Ms. Luella WagnerLuella Wagner has taught for over 20 years at both the elementary and high school levels. She has taught internationally in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and in the mission field in American Samoa. She recently spent a year teaching on the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation in southeastern Montana. Wagner has been a presenter at Regional Congresses of the Los Angeles Archdiocese and has conducted retreats and workshops throughout the Los Angeles area. C-18 Celebrating School Liturgies: Preparation Guidelines An exploration of foundational liturgical principles for teachers in Catholic Schools and in Religious Education Programs, when preparing students for liturgy, including eucharistic liturgy and morning prayer. We will also discuss creating an environment for prayer in the classroom. Ms. Joan Vos started working at her first parish at St. Mel in Woodland Hills, in 1976. Then left Los Angeles in 1979 to pursue a Master of Arts in Liturgical Music at the University of Notre Dame. After graduating, she worked in Toronto at various parishes and on the Diocesan Music Commission; established and managed the Office of Worship in Wichita, Kansas; wrote and published “Celebrating School Liturgies: Guidelines for Planning,” published by Liturgical Press in 1990. (Now out of print!) Since returning to Los Angeles in 1992, and while raising three daughters, she has worked in various parishes. Joan was also a member of Cardinal Mahoney’s Committee for the writing of “Gather Faithfully Together”. She is currently Director of Liturgy and Music at Church of the Good Shepherd in Beverly Hills. She has also taught private piano and classroom music for nearly 40 years.

Father Ismael Robles Associate priest serving at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Santa Fe Springs CA. Mr. Giovanni Perez is the Consultant of Elementary Catechesis for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. He has a Master of Arts in Religious Studies, a BA in Psychology and is also a Master Catechist.
