Phono Solar had designed and implemented this Wind & Solar Hybrid Off-Grid System with one 2kW wind turbine and eight 190W standard modules in Sindh, Karachi, Pakistan. This project developed to help the householder to combat the problem of unstable power supply, to vastly improve the reliability of power source in Pakistan and lead a huge economical efficiency. Pakistan has a big population of 191,715,847 (2014 data), with the development of economy, the country is meeting the long time tense situation of the shortage of the source of energy, but rich of wind and solar resource: Wind resources: There is 1,046 kilometers coastline in Sindh province, which stores in 50WM wind resources. The average annual wind speed of some areas reaches to 6.5m/s. Solar resources: The average solar radiation of Pakistan is 2,142kW/m2, especially Sindh and Balochistan, whose sunshine time are both over 3,000hours/year and solar radiation are 2000kWh/m2.
Project Location
Wind and solar resource in Pakistan perfect Complementary each other when one is in the low peak condition. The challenge during the system design is due to the jumbled wires in the house. As a technical support, Phono Solar engineer adopted the standard equipment to assemble and changed the original wiring distribution. After optimize the wires, the house is reduced 50% power consumption to 11 kWh per day, the system could run more safely and save more energy as a result. Another challenge during the installation is as the seriously power shortage in Pakistan, during the 3 days of installation, the house’s power was cut off 3 to 4 times per day, lasted 5mins to 60mins, totally 1.6 hours per day. The frequent failure of electric power in Karachi makes big troubles in people’s life and working.

The electricity is generated from wind turbine and solar modules at first, and local grid is as a supplement, so that the whole system could output steady electricity for system to avoid the disadvantage of unstable electricity in most local areas in Pakistan. In no grid areas, the system’s power box could connect with diesel generator instead of local grid. Besides, the wind turbine and solar modules are all installed on the house roof to save the floor space. The success of this off-grid system is to vastly improve the reliability of power source for householder, in mostly residences in Pakistan, people usually have a standby diesel generator in case of power off. But the diesel generators work with a huge noise and make pollution, especially disturbing people to have a rest. And moreover, the slow start of the generators will make damage on appliances. At the average annual wind speed of 3.55m/s, the 2KW wind turbine could generate 2100KWH per year, while the 1.5KW solar modules could generate 2400KWH per year. The system provides customers safe
