Working in Bekasi - living in Jakarta?

Hi all,

I'm considering taking a position in Bekasi, and will come to Jakarta/Bekasi soon for a day or two to see if it will be manageable. To be honest, most of the opinions I have read online have not been too great, and I'm a bit apprehensive. I've lived in other parts of Asia for almost ten years now, so living abroad isn't an issue, I'm more concerned about the generally negative feedback that I have seen about Jakarta online. I'm trying to keep an open mind and would really like to see some good things while I am in Jakarta, and visit some areas to live which would be a reasonable commute to Bekasi, with relatively new expat quality housing. Any suggestions you can offer would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance. JT P.S. I am a single guy, 36, American, if that helps with the suggestions. Decent restaurants, shopping, sports (e.g., tennis), and nightlife are all considerations. :-) Tags: bekasi, housing

Whereelse in Asia have you lived?

I would say Jakarta itself (having been there last year) is a great place aside from the traffic, pollution and humidity. But growing up, I have always heard not so great things about Bekasi (high crime, being an industrial area, not safe, etc)...but this was back in the late 80s.

Thanks for your perspective. I am living in Thailand now and was in Shanghai and Singapore before this.

Ah yes, for sure Jakarta can't compare to Singapore in cleanliness.....safety and orderliness. Shanghai: I've never been there, but I've been told it's humongous...bigger than Jakarta. Thailand I'd say is the closest to Jakarta among the three...your adjustment should not be too difficult (compare to if you moved straight from non-asian countries to Bekasi). 10 years living in Asia under your belt, I'd say you can do more than just survive in Jakarta.

I haven't been to Jakarta after almost 20 years so my geography is pretty bad...but if you can work in Bekasi and maybe live closer to central Jakarta (or maybe South Jakarta), that would be good.

U didn't mention the location of ur office. I mean which area of Bekasi. COme on...Bekasi is not that bad. Yes...a lot of ppl work at Jkt and buy house @ bekasi, that makes a bad traffic jam. Usually in the morning from bekasi to Jkt drection, in the afternoon from Jkt to Bekasi and during weekend (road to mall and exit of housing complex). Yes...there're several industrial area, big & small factory at Bekasi, Cikarang, etc. A lot of big shopping mal at West Bekasi such as Mal metropolitan, Giant, hypermart, etc. U can find decent restaurant & shopping at that places. About nightlife...Jakarta offers more choice. A big housing complex like grand wisata/harapan Indah/kota legenda etc has their own country club with tennis / golf yard. U're single, it means u prefer live in apartement. I dont think Bekasi has a luxury apartment (I'm not sure about Lippo Cikarang - 20 min from Bekasi). On the other hand, there're a lot choice of nice apartment @ Jkt. BUT, u hv to consider about the daily travel distance from Jkt-Bekasi. U may spend 1 - 2 hrs driving per trip (again...it's my estimation, since u didnt mention the address of ur office). And yes...there was bad flood in some area @ Bekasi Hope it gives another perspective to u.

Traditionally expats either lived in the centre (Jalan Sudirman) or South such as Pondok Indah and Kemang. But more than a few expats are beginning to venture eastwards and parts of Bekasi are quite liveable these days.

Sorry as I mentioned before, I haven't been back in almost 20 years (except for a short trim last year) but looks like it has improved a lot! Plus if the OP can find a good apartment complex 20 minutes away, that definitely beats the hassle of 1 hour traffic each way..that's 2 hours/day wasted just sitting in a car. So yeah, maybe a good idea to live closer to Bekasi for easier daily commute....and go to Jakarta on the weekends...it's cheaper that way vs living close to where the clubs, restaurants are, you're bound to spend more money

Here is my post for someone who was planning to live in Kali Malang (which is pretty close to Bekasi I may add):

It also depends on which Kalimalang area your office is going to be. If you happen to get at the western entrance of Kali Malang, good luck. Traffic is usually better as you near Pondok Kelapa Area and you will have plenty of escape routes to go to just in case of traffic. IMHO, you better off living in the area than elsewhere in Jakarta because of the traffic reason. There are at least five major shopping malls nearby (plus one minor, Tomang Tol Plaza) and seven major supermarkets available in the vicinity of Kali Malang (Giant @Pondok Kelapa; Hero @Bekasi CyberPark; Hypermart @Mega Bekasi; Lion Superindo @Mal Metropolitan Bekasi @Tomang Tol Plaza; Carrefour @Bekasi Square & @Blue Mal Bekasi; and Lotte Mart) in addition to mini marts and warungs.

Note about apartments in Centrepoint complex in Bekasi... they are all tiny, very small! .... and overpriced in my opinion, although yes, very convenient location. Definitely cheaper to rent a house.

hi JT, if your work area is in North Bekasi, then Kelapa Gading (North Jakarta) is a perfect place to stay. It's only about 30 minutes driving if the traffic is good, but can be more than 1,5 hours if it's bad. You can find almost everything, from restaurants, shopping center, sports center, nightlife, etc. in Kelapa Gading.

We live in Cilandak near the toll road to Bekasi. DH works in Bekasi. All expats at his company live in Jakarta and commute out. The families live near us and the singles live in places like Senayan and some of the others mentioned in above threads. I can't speak for nightlife . . . we've got three kids. Having a glass of wine at 9 p.m. is about as exciting as we get! But we are American if you have any questions from an American's perperspective.
