Welcome to Year 1 April - May 2018 Summer 1 I will use this page to showcase the learning that takes place in our classroom and let you all see the wonderful things that the children do. Please let me know if you have any ideas on what you would like to see on this page. Our overall theme for this half term will be 'The Seaside' English this half term will be text led through stories set in familiar places, focusing mainly on 'Superworm' and 'The Naughty Bus' amongst others. We will be using some of the 'Pie Corbett' strategies to really get to know the stories, in order to retell and innovate them. The children will have lots of opportunities to support them in generating ideas for their writing, for example; use of character and comic book apps on the iPads, Role Play and Drama! Again there will be lots of opportunities to write! Throughout the year, there will be a focus on spelling, punctuation and grammar. Spelling will be taught through daily phonic lessons where children will learn the essential skills needed for reading and writing. During our English lessons, the children will focus on different aspects of punctuation and grammar, for example; continuing with capital letters, full stops, finger spaces and sentence structure from the previous half term, and introducing adjectives to describe nouns, use of 'and' to join words and ideas. Our Maths will focus on this half term on 'shape and 'position/direction'. By the end of Year 1 the children should be able to: Recognise 2D shapes in a variety of orientations - rectangles (including squares), circles, triangles Describe 2D shapes according to their properties (sides and corners) Can explain, What is the same and what is different about a set of shapes? Recognise 3D shapes in a variety of orientations - cylinder, triangular prism, cone, cube, cuboid, pyramids and spheres Describe 3D shapes according to their properties (faces, vertices and edges) Can identify 3D shapes from their 2D shadows? Can distinguish between left and right Can use positional language, e.g. next to Can use ordinal language, e.g. 1st, 4th Can use the language of position, direction and motion, including: left and right, top, middle and bottom, on top of, in front of, above, between, around, near, close and far, up and down, forwards and backwards, inside and outside Can connect turning clockwise with movement on a clock face Pupils use the language of position, in front of, above, between, around, near, close and far, up and down, forwards and backwards, inside and outside Can ask questions to find the position of an object We will continue with counting and number skills. By the end of Year 1 the children should be able to: count to and across 100, forwards and backwards, beginning with 0 or 1, or from any given number count, read and write numbers to 100 in numerals; count in multiples of twos, fives and tens given a number, identify one more and one less identify and represent numbers using objects and pictorial representations including the number line, and use the language of: equal to, more than, less than (fewer), most, least read and write numbers from 1 to 20 in numerals and words. The children will have lots of opportunities to take part in practical, 'real life', activities that will allow them to apply their learning. In Science we will be looking at plants; learning to: Identify and name a variety of common wild and garden plants, including deciduous and evergreen trees Identify and describe the basic structure of a variety of common flowering plants, including trees We will start to look at animals and learn to: Identify and name a variety of common animals including fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals Identify and name a variety of common animals that are carnivores, herbivores and omnivores Describe and compare the structure of a variety of common animals (fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals, including pets) In History we will be learning about seaside holidays of the past, learning about the concept of differences in time periods, chronological understanding through ordering and creating timelines. We will be looking at and analysing different sources of evidence, and using historical language. This half term in RE we will be looking at 'People who met Jesus'. In PSHE we will be looking at 'Right and Wrong'. PE will take place on Tuesday with Mr Hall and Thursday with Miss Smith; this half term we will be covering 'Striking & Fielding Games' and 'Outdoor Athletics'. Through Computing we will be creating links to other areas of the curriculum, using both the laptops and iPads. We will be Coding/Programming using Kodable. We will be learning to use the internet to research using hyperlinks to reliable websites. . In Design & Technology we will be looking at food ad designing and making our own picnic food. Music will continue to be taught alongside Miss Phillips.
Reading – we will be continuing with Guided Reading and changing the children’s reading books. We will encourage lots of reading activities throughout the day; using all our lessons whether it be as a class, in a group, with a friend, or on their own. Children will also be reading with our Reading Rangers.
Water bottles – can you please ensure that your child has a named water bottle in school each day.
